She's a fine moderator, but her comments on the Tiguan were useless. She liked it because it can carry stuff? Lots of small SUVs can carry stuff. How does it drive? How does it compare to the CX5? Be helpful. I know this is not Car & Driver, but she should understand a little more about what a car review is supposed to be..

There are too many different people in Talking Cars episode to episode. I like Gabe best, he states his point and is clear about it. I might not agree with everything he says, but, I always get the point. He is very objective and knowledgeable. He doesn't whine. It is a great series, though.

CR: will you start estimating total cost of ownership? I don't see many 12+ year old VWs and Audis on the road anymore. Also, when measuring reliability, will you weight something that leaves you stranded as much more important than, say, the infotainment system locking up or a piece of trim falling off? One more thing- for cars out of warranty, reliability overall should allow your readers to estimate how likely they are to be left stranded weighted by how much it costs to fix something.

C-HR is the poster child of automakers open assault on visibility. First rear windows, now side windows. The Japanese/Korean automakers started it, U.S. propagated it. Germany was a hold out, but now they are caving in as well. Hopefully this will change soon. :-(

Will be interesting to see where styling heads as we get more and more driving aids (cameras, radar, self-driving, etc). Aerodynamics lead to worse visibility, but other tech (stronger glass, carbon fiber) can make it better.

I loved the Pacifica hybrid as well. The extra weight of the battery, the silence of the electric motor and the easy to use Uconnect make this hybrid a true bargain luxury car, especially considering the price after the tax rebate. Test drove the rx350, qx60, xc90 and thought the Pacifica hybrid was better than all of them. Only the q7 was better, but that easily cost 50% more.

Thanks to Jennifer for focusing again on Toyota's inept design indulgence with the C-HR . There ought to be a minimum visibility standard to allow cars to be sold. The awful sight lines of the C-HR will cause completely unnecessary crashes and suffering. Akio, send that one back to the drawing board ASAP.

I'm so glad the Pacifica is as good as it is. I've been wanting to like an FCA product for a long time and this one finally pulled it off. I have also been hearing good things about the build quality and reliability, but you'll be able to tell me if that's accurate a year or two from now. I do take one issue with what you said, I think the alfa guilia is slightly better, but that Pacifica would definitely be a close second.

CR, do you know why Chrysler chose not to offer memory seats and a middle seat option in the hybrid Pacifica, and if those options will be added in the future to make the hybrid more comparable to the regular gas engine model?
@tjs114

The middle seat arrangement on the Pacifica plug-in is because the batteries are located in the floor beneath them. It is also why they don't have Sto-N-Go. Alex on Autos did an excellent review of the Plug In Pacifica.

We totally agree on the like for the BMW 5 Series and VW Tiguan, unfortunately the Pacifica Hybrid and the Cadillac are not on sale here in Mexico, we also don't like the QX30, because of the interior room, it feels small and we never can fit comfortable, there's to many MB things in the dashboard that makes you wonder if they couldn't or want to make it more different than the German car, regards from Mexico =)

Curious Question -- Why does almost every single consumer report or study seem to flat-out ignore high-end luxury vehicles (Lincoln, Buick, Lexus, Cadillac, Jaguar, Porche, Volvo, Audi, BMW, Maserati, Mercedes-Benz, etc) and instead focus on the cheaper average all-around ones (Honda, Acura, Toyota, Infiniti, Mazda, Kia, Subaru, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Ford, Dodge, Nissan, Jeep, etc)? Granted, I have seen a FEW reports where luxury vehicles are listed, but in almost every single one, all of the luxury vehicles received terrible reviews except for Lexus.

Ryan Fiderlick Civic is best if your the type of person that likes to keep their cars for 15-20 years trouble free - which is something that a Hyundai or Kia cannot do. The Civic is also roomier, more fun to drive, and holds its resale value much higher. You will be very happy with a Civic

Traded in my 2015 Cruze ( which I liked a lot) for the Tiguan. It did not take me long to be glad that we did. I would not have chosen a VW not to long ago. Anything will break if you don't treat it right. I look forward to the changes the next model cycle makes. I'm glad that I have the Tiguan a chance. The radio, Bluetooth area so easy to use and I can fit my family of six ( a six and 9 year old in the back) in it. The torque is nice and gas mileage is good for the class imo. The 2017 was terrible to me.

I wish that CR would make public their algorithm for calculating the Road Test scores. I'd like to know the weights they apply to each spec. Some of the scores make no sense, e.g., the base Cayenne is rated at 78, whereas the CX-9 is rated at 80, the Grand Cherokee is rated 80-84, and the MDX is rated at 79. How on earth can the MDX or Grand Cherokee or CX-9 have higher road test scores than the Cayenne?

Stupid Question: when a hybrid or electric vehicle is running solely on electrical battery power how do you calculate MPG? Miles Per Gallon of what? Just askin'...
@stephenj4937
@stephenj4937 6 жыл бұрын
It's MPGe, where 33.7 kWh of electricity = 1 gallon of gasoline. So if you go 50 miles on 33.7 kWh, that is 50 MPGe.
@blurglide
@blurglide 6 жыл бұрын
Yes- a gallon of gas has 33.7 kWh of chemical energy. However, the figure can be misleading. A coal fired powerplant has an efficiency of about 40%, so multiply mpge by .4 if it's important for you to get a VERY rough estimate of how much fossil fuel you're burning. If you live somewhere with renewable or nuclear power adjust your numbers accordingly.

You should find a way to create a metric in regards to those cars in demand by the CR staff. Perhaps something "non-mandatory miles or hours logged". The hybrid Pacifica seem a bit bold to me. 29 miles of EV range is not enough, I would have loved a pure EV version or one with at least 80-100 miles of EV range so that you could almost never use the gas unless you were traveling far. At least it makes it one of the most fuel efficient mini van which is good.

Of the cars they liked basically they enjoyed the new car experience of models that all have very poor reliability history. I agree with the guy who likes the new BMW 5 series out of the previous generation F10 and I do like the new styling it's not so noticeable and at first I thought it looks similar to the F10 but it had to really grow with me for me to appreciate the new design styling where they stuck to the original roots and also the guy making a comment about the 4-cylinder twin-turbo that's only one option bro you forgetting this is BMW there's a 535i with an incline 6 Twin Turbo you have the option of a 550 with a V8 engine and you also if you got the money you can go with an M5 BMW gives you countless options so I think that was a pretty dumb comment that guy made and obviously for the Baseline model sedan people buying that car is obviously going to buy it for the look and the fuel economy and comfortably not to say that it still isn't a very capable machine easily if pushing the same amount of horsepower as a Honda Accord or Toyota Camry and although those two names are not comparable synonymously to BMW we are referring to the Baseline model and its advantages over the other more expensive models before 2011 at 528i used to come with an incline 6 at the Baseline model and the 535i was the same incline 6 with twin turbos so it was saw and thought to be a very reliable car we didn't have to worry about the maintenance of the two turbos and he still had a bulletproof incline 6 that has changed from 2011 and it is now an incline 4-cylinder twin-turbo and in fact a very interesting fact would be knowing that the 2011 BMW 528i F10 is the only F10 body style 528i base model to still carry an incline 6

the toyota CH-R I totally agree on what a mess that car is. Although "styling over function" I don't see any style, so that makes it the worst of both worlds and this was clearly a case of Toyota trying to be cool, but Toyota just isn't cool.

Volkswagen isn't even close to bottom of the list. They are in the "average" category. Something you may find interesting is that Audi is ranked #4 on their list, but share engines, drivetrains, and a lot of electronics with their VW counterparts. VW's tend to be quite reliable if they're maintained properly and not abused like older Japanese makes by people who like to go 20,000 miles without changing the oil.
@AudiKayder

Devon Parker that's the truth. The volkswagen brand is an extremely reliable brand if you treat the car well. Toyota don't need that type of treatment. Thats why VW is a drivers brand and Toyota is a brand for people who don't care about cars.

When did Consumer Reports become so subjective? I always thought that Consumer Reports from what I remember it to be taking the stance more towards, "lacking an opinion'. And focus more towards a consumer want or desire in features, performance and creature comforts. What happened?

I still say Hydrogen is pie in the sky when compared to BEV. My biggest thing is i can make my own fuel at home for my BEV w/ solar panels. If i want to do that w/ hydrogen its extremely costly and takes up a huge amount of land for the tanks and would only be viable for a small demographic. Jay's comment on the Infiniti locking you in makes ME so mad as well. Thats a Nissan thing and makes me furious. Its also a Subaru thing. EVERY time I curse the damn car, how dare you trap me in here making me press a damn button! I dont like that Subi's head units will start up music automatically. Ok you say just turn it off. NO cause when your in reverse you cant turn the radio off! So you are forced to turn turn turn it down. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!

Tesla's range is not an example of new technology but the scale. All their cars have massive batteries, in the Model S it weighs a tonne! In the Bolt the battery itself is 50% of the car's weight (that's why the rest is basically a cheap and nasty plastic box). It has nothing to do with ecology. And when it gets colder you loose 40% of range immediately.

This is almost exactly what I’ve been thinking but too scared to actually say lest I’m actually wrong. It almost seems as if the people who do Talking Cars have no real passion for cars at all. They can rattle off about how practical a car is, how good the fuel economy is, etc, but the only thing performance-wise the really care about is if it can get on a highway and accelerate fast enough to merge with the already fast-moving traffic. They almost never review sports cars and will probably never even see a supercar in their boring, monochrome lifetime. The real cherry on top is how absolutely ruthless they are about safety. To them, a car is an utter deathtrap unless it has automatic emergency braking and forward collision warning (as if it would even be necessary to have both at the same time) as standard, and this has a noticeable effect on how good the car is to them. I bet if they were reviewing a priceless new Ferrari they would whine about how unsafe and “too fast” it is, and score it really low. Even if it was the first car to ever reach 300 miles per hour, they would dismiss this and just keep whining, giving the car a low score regardless of its actual performance. They clearly have no respect for car culture, either, seemingly completely ignoring the huge JDM and American muscle community. Overall, it seems like Consumer Reports does not see cars as a fun, novel way to get around, or an extension of one’s personality, but as a simple mode of transport, like walking, or taking a bus, or a plane. TL;DR CR doesn’t understand the point of cars
@noonions4138
@noonions4138 6 жыл бұрын
“CR doesn’t understand the point of cars". No, you don't understand the point of Consumer Reports. Their market is the vast majority of car owners. People who want a car to start when it's supposed to, that won't leave them stranded, that gets decent gas mileage, and that offers them quiet comfortable transportation. If you doubt that, consider the number of Camrys, Accords, and similar as opposed to the “muscle” cars. Extension of one’s personality? You are not what you drive. Just as owning a Pit Bull does not make you rough and tough. Anecdotally my sister-in-law drives a Corvette and I can assure you she is not a Corvette (a 10 year old Camry comes to mind).

I'm passionate about not being stranded on the side of the road. A car is simply an appliance that (hopefully) gets you safely to your destination. I'll satisfy my urge to drag race on the X-Box.

Tip#1 - no background music in video #2 - no beating around the bushes #3- raise the audio levels to an appropriate decided which gets viewers attentions easily!
