This song plays PERFECTLY on fingerpicking guitar in the key of A. I'm an old man, and I remember the Carter Family when they were still recording. They, and especially this song, are part of my identity and my heritage.

Sarah and Maybelle complimented each other's voices so well! Every time I hear them sing I get a little piece of my paternal grandma back. She, also was from Southwest Virginia. the dialect is so distinct.

What is so hard to figure out? It's straightforward country singing of the highest caliber. It tells a story plain and simple. There's nothing incoherent about it. It teaches biblical, old country moral values.As far as their voice quality it isn't meant to impress as so much music following them seems to be. It was genuine, melodic and soothing. At least this is my opinion.

Beautiful melody, their voices fall into each other so smoothly, perfection in something so simple.

I love this song. One of my earliest memories is hearing this song on my grandpa's record player. That must have been around 1966 and this song was and oldie even way back then.

My daughter and I listened to this song over and over again a few years ago on a ride in my truck. Together we tried to analyze it but never really figured it out. We didn't figure it out, but boy did we enjoy it. I miss those times when this Dad had his daughter to share this kind of stuff together.

When I die, I pray that wherever I go, people like the Carters are there. The values of their time look pretty good to me today. I remember when a man would get knocked down for swearing in front of women and children.

this famaly might be the route to the music from today.. believe it or not.. country - rock n roll -- blues .rock . john lennon elvis presley taylor swift. the beatles the rolling stones name it ! all !! this were the founder of the music from today... maybe i might be wrong because it sounds so strange but i believe this ! beside .. june carter .. the wife of jonny cash was their daughter..

+Reno Weed You are right about that: Blue Grass is the roots of many music styles of the 60's and later on. Just like Link Wray set the new sound of electric guitar and its' sound. There are few original founders, but countless followers in the world of music!

Think the ambiguity in the lyrics is part of what makes the song great. It challenges your understanding. I don't think "coherency" is necessary at all to appreciate a song. That is part of the almost mystical beauty of art. I also disagree with the statement that the Carter Family was really not that good "by modern standards". Their music did what music was designed to do. If it doesn't make the grade "by modern standards" then I disagree with modern standards.
@fscofi10 жыл бұрын
AP does not sing on this song. The Original Carter Family was very sophisticated compared to the contemporary recording artists. They were well practiced, well recorded and professional in all their music. Anyone who says they were not is just wrong. I can say in all honesty I never heard a bad note out of Maybelle's guitar on any of The Carter Family recordings and I have listened to their music for years.

My great grandmother was first cousins with Maybell Addington Carter. They were from the same holler...same age. My great grandmother was a good guitar player as well. Quit playing after she moved to Akron during the depression with my great grandpa.

"There's a girl up the country , that I really love" - How can they say that? Well they just did! That's what love does, it smashes through the boundaries. I am secular myself, but the Christians are very right to say that love is much more than just getting what you want

@@machinenkanone9358 International Workers of the World, i.e. the Wobblies. Back in the twenties they were a labor force to be reckoned with. It was a movement that emphasized brotherhood and community, and was never tainted with the criminals that got in charge of like, say, the Teamsters. They are still around but only just. I forget what happened but the movement collapsed after some scandal or great failing. They were known for such tactics as when one of them was unjustly arrested, then thousands would flood the town or company and overwhelm the cops and courts. The novel In Dubious Battle by John Steinbeck is about the Wobblies, although I don't think he mentions the name. Capital was terrified of them and with good reason. Happy New Year, brother!
