"I can't Feel at Home in this World Anymore" is both mournful and hopeful. We all long for home. For a time, we may be content with the values, hopes, and benefits of this world. As we progress, we find ourselves outside the mainstream or, perhaps, fading in our capacity to adapt and thrive. It could be the loss of our own health, or our friends and family. It could be the growing sense of a better home. What then, is the attraction of home? H - At home you HANG your hat. You hang your hat, your hopes, and your baggage on the racks of home. You take off your shoes. You recline. You identify. You give out your address as your place of residence. On a good day, it is where you can be found. When you are at home, you are not wandering. O - At home you OCCUPY your environment. You can roam around the house when you are at home. Things feel familiar. The people are familiar. You can find your favorite mug. Your favorite foods are in the cupboard. Your home has been fashioned around your needs and preferences. M - At home you MINGLE your vision with those with whom you dwell. There is a commonality with your home folks. You may not all have the same habits or preferences, but you have been abe to mingle and merge your needs and work together to build community and life. Your common life has been defined in agreements and understandings. E - At home, you are at EASE, you rest, and you are comforted. You relax at home because it is home. When you walk in the door, it all fits. You belong. There is peace. So, when the singer says, "I can't feel at home in this world any more, she or he implies that those things are no longer true of the world. Part of it is a longing for the eternal home. With that comes the sense that, in some ways, we no longer belong here. We can't fit in. We can't relax. We cannot merge our values. We cannot adapt our identity. We cannot share our vision of truth. When we say we are not home yet, we are saying, with hope and expectation, that we are on our way.

This brings back memories for me. When I was just a pup, we would listen to the old 78s (78 rpm) and later on to the 33-1/3 rpm LP vinyl records of the Carter Family. Then Maybelle and her daughters made regular appearances at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, at the old Ryman Auditorium. Where we lived--in the country, in the South--we made our own music. Friends would gather on the weekends, and we all made music together and everyone had a chance to sing their favorite songs. Everybody knew at least one Carter Family song--and at least one Jimmy Rogers song--and most knew an Ernest Tubb song or two (like "My Filipino Baby" or "Walkin' the Floor Over You"). The Carter Family was the gold standard--not because they were exceptional performers, but because they were "down home" folks from the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. People like baasting, Hatty Preme, and others who post the Carter Family recordings help keep those wonderful memories alive. Thank you, baasting, for uploading and sharing this one. Be sweet! Daisy Mae

i don’t believe in god myself but think this song communicates a wonderful sense of longing for something greater and more beautiful. and as someone who sees people being so unkind and horrible to one another all the time- i think that’s something that is very relatable. it’s hard to live in a world full of so much cruelness and even harder to feel at home in it.

Verse 1] This world is not my home, I'm just a-passing through My treasures and my hopes are all beyond the blue; Where many Christian children have gone on before And I can't feel at home in this world anymore Over in glory land there is no dying there The saints are shouting Victory and singing everywhere I hear the voice of Nell that I have heard before And I can't feel at home in this world anymore [Chorus] Oh Lord, You know I have no friend like you If Heaven's not my home, Oh Lord what would I do? Angels taken me to Heaven's open door And I can't feel at home in this world anymore [Verse 2] Heaven's expecting me that's one thing I know I fixed it up with Jesus a long time ago He will take me through though I am weak and poor And I can't feel at home in this world anymore Oh I have a loving mother over in glory land I don't expect to stop until I shake her hand She's gone on before just waiting at heaven's door And I can't feel at home in this world anymore

Belief in the afterlife seems to be incompatible with modern findings about the brain and being sentient. However, considered how crappy life was for most people when those songs were written I don't blame people for wanting to go to Heaven. And life is still crappy for countless people. If we are able to fix this world so everybody can have a good life, then everybody will be cherishing their one and only life. And listening to old time music can be part of enjoying life to the fullest.

@@DellaStreet123 I completely agree with you. I think religion is very important for a lot of people. It gives hope. And hope in my opinion, is the one thing that is so necessary especially when you’re down. I think just having a rich material life is not really a satisfying life. Maybe it is. I don’t really know. I don’t live a modern trendy material lifestyle. But maybe it is a happy life and I’m just not aware of it. But I think we’ve lost a family connection in our modern life and that seems just as bleak to me.

I’m a black man weeping for the soul of my once great country in the earliest hours of June 1, 2020, while cities all around me burn and the police shoot my people and Nazi agitators stalk the streets of my hometown smashing the windows of businesses I support and shouting about Hitler at my neighbors, and all we want is peace and fairness. Someone shared this link with me and I sit here alone in the early hours and cry and cry and cry......

Lmfao, you mean Antifa and BLM destroy your neighborhood. You people will never stop, "nazi agitators", 😂. Free your mind and leave the Democrat slave plantation. Thank God that the men of color I call my brothers are not weak minded victims like you. You're pathetic, Dr. King loathed blacks like you, Coretta Scott King loathes people like you too. Let that victim mentality keep you down, it suits you.
