That's a beautiful way of expressing something a lot of people, including me, feel, not only about the world of the Carter Family, but any remote place of a time long gone. Of course, there is an asterisk to those longings - we didn't experience all that was terrible about that place, wherever and whenever it was. Yet for all that, the next time I hear a Carter Family song, I'll wish I could walk the streets of Maces Springs, Va., in the 1920s and '30s - "again."

I love to hear AP sing. They say his mom was almost struck by lightning when pregnant with him. They credit his extraordinary voice and the fact he always shaked really bad on the fact that the lightning got so close to her during pregnancy. I love his voice. Do you hear the extra quality of his voice. It's like a buzzing almost. Anyway his voice is extremely beautiful...

@martaacosta4415 Жыл бұрын
I love his voice too. It’s partly because my heart hurts for him, knowing his sad fate in love, but he does have a “raw” voice, as someone said. It’s raw, authentic, trained only by the hills and hollows of his native Virginia, and it’s earthy. It also complements Sara’s voice beautifully, I think. And one more part of its charm is that he joins in with harmony or on the refrain, seemingly whenever he feels like it! I’m no musician, but I hold with the theory that if you practice a lot and become real good at what you do- whether singing, or playing an instrument, or composing and writing lyrics- you can sometimes just jump in there and rearrange on the spot, right in the middle of a performance, and it will turn out just fine.

I'm not sure what Far Cry is, but I am very grateful it has brought so many souls here. A match has been lit and flame will not too slowly consume this world, with fits and starts. As says the song, the world will be on fire. Choose you this day good people. Turn to Christ. The King is soon coming...The dusk of the age of grace is already falling... Jesus wants that none should perish. Ask Him yourself... He promised to answer those who truly seek Him. And, unlike the princes of this world, His word is faithful and good.

Well said my Brother, well said. I enjoyed and got laugh out of your comment saying you were not sure what a far cry was. And wanted to share it with you. I was born & raised as the 10th generation of some of my genealogy lines in Wilkes County, in NW North Carolina's Brushy Mountains. The term "far cry" I can still hear and heard all of my life. It means it is not even close or cannot compare to what it is being compared to. Example is "People by a massive majority live a far cry from the world they think they live in." Only Jesus can provide sight for that and the inner peace to face what is coming. Another example is, "A great many Americans self-identify as Christian today. But when they are examined by their life & fruit it clearly shows they are a "far cry" from what a real Christian truly is. Hope that helps brother. God Bless & hello from Grayson County Virginia's Blue Ridge mountains on the NC line. - Jeremiah

Hi glnelson, It seems there is lots of biographical information out there. My source has Mr. Riddle and A.P. meeting in Kingsport in 1927. And I'm certain, as you are, that Maybelle was an excellent guitarist before she met Lesley. But, it is noted that she watched his slide and finger picking technique and adapted much of it to her style--a style that countless country pickers have copied. Such as it is though, there is always room for error and misinterpretation. So thanks for your note. best, elwood
@glnelson195610 жыл бұрын
Elwood, You are correct in that there is much biographical information and some of it may be more estimation than fact. Below is a source I feel is reliable indicating that A.P. met Leslie after the Carter's second recording session in May 1928 for RCA Victor in Camden NJ. A.P. needed more songs for the upcoming RCA sessions and was out "song-catching" much of the time. He was introduced to Leslie in Kingsport, TN later in 1928 while on such a trip. @vaibanez17 Of course, "borrowing" of lyric and melody phrases has gone on for millenia. Classical composers 'stole' from folk tunes, and the folk tunes of one group usually 'piggyback' off of the folk tunes of another. I just like to see due attribution of sources whenever possible. Sometimes, though, songs come to you and you're not aware of who their 'ancestors" were.

This song was recorded between 1927-1934. I have it on the Carter Family collection box I bought, 5 cd! It's a collection og their best song in the years 1927-34..
