been almost 3 years for me. Its nice. The clarity part everyone talks about is real. The only thing that sucks is the bonding part that is mentioned in the video is tougher, but mostly because many people havent learned how to bond with others without alcohol. But I have learned caffeine has been a good replacement when I want to go out with friends. And I also don't burden myself with staying out as late as they do. Drunks take a lot of energy to be around lol

Really it's a form of medicine. Alcohol makes routine and mundane tasks less of a burden and provides relief from psychological discomfort. Be it a bad relationship or a boring, dead-end job, alcohol makes the situation durable for a longer period of time without psychological or emotional stress. That being said, I don't know anyone who is more successful or found a better path through life because of alcohol. It's like any number of SSRI's now, it mutes the problems (and creates others) but it doesn't fix anything.

This explanation doesn't strike me as plausible. The most likely scenario is that it was a convenient way to store consumable liquid for prolonged periods of time and the pleasurable aspect was a secondary consideration over survival. Cholera was a thing... hell, recently.

It started as a necessity, beer and bread go hand in hand and are made with some of the same ingredients. But the beer was even safer to drink than the stagnant water they were dealing with most of the time. I don't think getting drunk motivated people to "settle down" and cultivate; that came by necessity, in order to survive. The fact that it would get you drunk was just a weird side effect.

He claims that knowledge of boiling water to make it potable has been around for as long as civilization as well. The problem with using that as an explanation is obvious. Alcohol as a boon to creative thinking is also suspect. If there are benefits in that direction, they soon disappear with repeated use and make you less creative and competent fairly quickly. Long term Drunken Mastery may be a thing but it is rare as hell. Bukowski is the only one that I can think of that certainly achieved it.

How is this remotely relevant to libertarianism? If someone chooses to abstain from alcohol, for whatever reason, how is it anyone else's business? Even if this guy is right about everything, why does Reason need to be the one to publicize his views? Could he not share those views on some other, more relevant, platform? What purpose does this video serve other than to subtly critique tee-totalers? I don't think libertarians should be commenting on anyone's private choices, neither positively nor negatively. At best you might end up giving good advice to someone who DID NOT ASK FOR IT and at worst you might actively alienate someone who would otherwise support your movement. Let this guy go share his ideas on some science channel, Reason should stick to talking about liberty.
@whyjnot420
@whyjnot420 2 жыл бұрын
And talking about what choices a person can make is not talking about liberty? Talking about why certain things should be allowable/legal is not talking about liberty? How does getting into the details of a particular argument fundamentally disagree with a libertarian stance? Any teetotaler with the view that others are allowed to make their own choices will not be dissuaded from a Libertarian (note big L) way of doing things. Any teetotaler who thinks that they have the right to choose for other people, will NEVER take a libertarian stance on things unless they change that opinion.

A CRUTCH- that's what I see alcohol being promoted as here. There are many techniques and skills that can be learned to increase socializing skills, reduce anxiety, stimulate creativity, etc. without ingesting substances. And without nearly the level of risk. And dependency on alcohol or other substances for the temporary benefits can retard and hinder developing those skills, and mastering self control. Clearly alcohol has been a big part of many civilizations, and history. Clearly we should be free to consume whatever we want, but we are always responsible for our actions. The promotion of alcohol here in this video is a bit unwise and short-sighted, without pointing out other views, and the harms alcohol has caused and causes as well.

One problem with this case: Spirits were only invented relatively recently in human history (a cursory search says that the distillation of wine, to isolate the alcohol within, first occurred in the 9th century AD). Since then spirits have moved on from forms of medicine to mainstream alcoholic beverages. Most of the time when people drink to the point of requiring medical attention, spirits are involved. It's important to remember that the way the ancients drank is very different from the drinking culture of today. Drinking is fine, but we have to watch it since alcohol today is much stronger than it used to be.

I grew up among Mayan Indians whose high genetic addiction rate, like other "First Nations," to alcohol was destroying their people group. To my knowledge, no cultures have desired drunkenness among their women, men, or children, and only the leisure-class elite or drug-induced shaman were seen as benefiting from drunkenness/psychedelics. Refrigeration is a modern invention so many cultures had things spoil, some turned alcoholic, some vinegar, some uneatable. Alcohol cannot get beyond 14% with natural fermentation, and was usually diluted to1-3% alcohol, as that was helpful against waterborne disease. Where water was boiled, for tea etc, the same benefit was achieved. Strong drink (14% alcohol) is soundly condemned in the Bible. The history of the destructiveness of distilled spirits (15-80%), especially once they became cheap and widely available, is unparalleled until the modern distilled-drug era (heroin, cocaine, fentanyl, etc).

What about the *many* other cultivated and produced substances by humans? Alcohol, by volume, is markedly awful for your body to achieve a ‘cultural experience’. Alcohol is one of the few recreational drugs we are okay with, and happens to be one of the worst long-term.. much like cigarettes. I believe we should allow all the drugs. I think the many of the negatives of alcohol will be reduced as use of it as a single and numbing substance will be spread across other substances, a few of which (mushrooms) are actually fantastic at dulling habitual behaviors and reducing stress long term. Not a shroomy guy or anything, just a person who doesn’t drink, smoke, or take drugs regularly looking at systemic acceptance of bodily restriction and purposeful ignorance of other options. If I want to do those drugs, I should be allowed to do them, and I sure as hell would have little interest in alcohol if everything was available. Frankly I think alcohol would fall off the map as soon as most of society had tried other things.

Yeah dude, not quite sure what your point is there as most folks know you’ll fry your mf brain on gobs of mushrooms a week repeatedly in due time. Most folks are not trying to hallucinate with permanent visual snow for life or worse, a lotta random psychedelic events occurring out of the blue at 50 years old. You need *gobs* of alcohol to feed a society in comparison and mushrooms have not been proven to be addictive- very much unlike alcohol. The point being: just because a lotta mushrooms aren’t being consumed, doesn’t mean people aren’t deriving equal or greater than enjoyment. Plus the argument isn’t about *shrooms* I want it *all* legal. And against it *all* alcohol is not the choice people would choose.

Alcohol, cigarettes, huka,...Not even once was I interested in any addictive substance from thw sort. People who defend such disruptive substances, they defend it by the instinct of the human nature, the pleasure that develops a habit and it persists. All of the excuses circulating around the material supposing them as benefits, are nothing but empty reasons to justify not the root of the issue but what is around it. I find that a person must consider commiting to avoid any addictive substances ranging from sugar, pornography, alcohol...to the most addictive substances out there and seeking help is essential in severe cases. Happiness, if it is what envisaged, you will find it in experiencing your strength and capabilites to their full potential, where limitations stops you. Happiness is a complex trait within the human that cannot be approached except by understanding yourself rather than instant gratification sources.

i think this video should be called "why we started drinking" instead of "why we drink". titling it "why we drink" sorta implies that it has the same benefits that it did when civilization was first forming but we can easily see how that's not true. so many people's lives are ruined by alcohol and it's clear that the benefits no longer outweigh the costs. we can find more healthy ways of socializing without having to involve alcohol while making people's livers healthier and having more cognitive function that gives people more self awareness and the same confidence can be achieved through self discipline and meditation. in my opinion alcohol is like religion. it was very useful in our evolutionary development but now it has more drawbacks than pros and it has now outlived it's evolutionary usefulness.

Can we imagine a social gathering without alcohol? Or food? Folks would likely be too anxious to talk to one another. Social lubricants decrease the natural basal paranoia people have towards each other. It's either that or some barter of shared identity (sometimes profound, sometimes meaningless) that can help decrease paranoia enough so people can be fair, or cooperative, towards one another. A backdrop of pleasure helps make unpleasant experiences tolerable. If anything, the preponderance of alcohol or food or destination vacationing indicates that humans need assistance to cope with the presence of others. The expectation that being with others should be (in of itself) pleasurable should be questioned.

I find sober people to be much more interesting as they have coherent thoughts and the full use of their brains (I guess I am a PFC fan). Food does enhance social gatherings no doubt, but it is completely optional. Personally, I find games to be the most effective social lubricant trumping both food and alcohol.

I grew up in Utah, where there was plenty of community events and parties with friends where alcohol wasn't even considered. Using alcohol as a crutch to reduce social anxiety creates greater social anxiety and dependence on the drug in the long run. The same goes for the other "advantages" here in the video. The same results can be achieved without alcohol or other substances by simply learning a few skills and techniques to reduce anxiety or increase creativity or whatever. That's not to say there's no use for such substances, just that the benefits need to be weighed against the risks.

I started drinking when I was 16 (its normal here in Germany). I eventually stopped because when I trew my housewarming party I was asked why the crate of beer was half empty if they were the first people visiting. I started again when I moved back to my father to save money while going to university. I previously worked for a pharmaceutical company but because of the poor planning of the company I saw 3 different departments before I couldn't find another job opening there. My father drinks at least one beer every day so it's impossible not to be confronted with alcohol. I eventually switch to alcohol free beer because I didn't want to end up the same. I have convinced my father to at least drink one of the alcohol free beers, when eating and drinking with me. I never liked the taste of alcohol but I have to say a good alcohol free beer tastes great. I assume it's the same as with dark chocolate, chili peppers, Brussel sprouts, tee or real French cheese. At first they are bitter and/or unpleasant but once you get used to the extreme taste you will find other aromas that are actually pleasant.

@@Ninjaeule97 My dad visited Germany w the USAF in the 1950s. On base, the water was good, & soft drinks were available. In town, the water was undrinkable, & no soft drinks were available. When he wanted an authentic German meal, his options in town were numerous beers or nothing. He ordered one & barely drank 1/5th of it before he was done. His only beer consumption. After his first experience, he brought his own canned soda from base. Alcohol has some positive healty effects, esp in purifying poor water, similar to pickling foods for preservation. (Ever tried saurkraut on pizza? Yum!) It's understandable why it's ingrained so deeply in German culture. Individual levels of alcoholism range from psychological reasons including addiction to physiological reasons. I put an apple on my dashboard to bake in a bowl while I went into the store. When I came back, it was hot & mushy. Delcious. I tried it again when I got home but forgot about it until Monday. Cold. Mushy. Moldy. Sour. Apple ale smells just like that rotten apple. I had a buncu of grapes that got forgotten in the car. Moldy & sour. Every wine I've tried smells just like those moldy grapes. Sip 1. No sip 2.

@@theTeslaFalcon I can assure your that nowadays our water is clean enough that you can drink from pretty much any sink that's clean. Of course there is still old pipes in some houses but as far as I know we don't have a Flint situation here. Population density in Germany is pretty high so there aren't that many dead spots unless you go camping. 1950 is ~50 years from when I was born. I am pretty sure that nowadays you can get a German meal in every town. I would stay away from booze that smells or tastes moldy, sour or yeasty is fine. But maybe some people like moldy tasting drinks. I heared Hershey still add a compound that is also found in puke to their chocolate, because it was produced from an old milk pasture process they used and now people have been so gotten used to the puke flavor that they would miss it. In Frankfurt Äpfelwein (Apple wine) is pretty popular as is wine. I never liked anything with a alcohol content higher than 5% (the standard beer) because I can taste the alcohol i.e. the burning sensation in my throat. Usually you delude the Äpfelwein with either sparkeling water or lemonade then it's pretty much the same as beer. When I drink alcohol it's usually within a social setting and it happens so rarely and I drink so little that I am sure my liver will regenerate easily. A Italian would probably nail you to a cross for putting Sauerkraut on pizza but I know a Sauerkraut pasta casserole recipe that sound awful if you never tried it but actually tastes really good.

If adult humans frontal lobe is to dominant why haven’t we evolved to have it a less major part of our brain. Reason tv is a good channel but they have a clear bias towards drugs. This video and on about a dude who takes heroin responsibility are great examples of truth but wrong conclusions. Yes there are people who take heroin and hold day jobs but there are a lot more who are on the streets and committing real crimes to feed there addiction and saying here is one good example so we should make hard drugs legal(I believe we should). Let’s be honest the majority of people who take heroin do not get a benefit from it and same with alcohol. For starters even moderate alcohol consumption is bad for the body(it’s literal poison) and sure alcohol can have frontal lobe mulling effects( if that is so important why didn’t we evolve to have smaller less powerful frontal lobes) but the majority of people who drink are either 1 binge drinking has pretty much none of the positive effects this video mentioned and 2 having a drink of 2 to relax and destress which sur did good but doesn’t actually fox the source of the stress.
