Sir, I can not adequately express to you how much your readings and the old stories have helped me over the last 2 years! The ball of yarn known as my life has had a couple of knots in it, cancer treatment and the death of my husband. While I shut the world out to give myself time to heal, I welcomed you in. You gave me the opportunity to avoid reality and live in a world of wonderful stories, creative authors and equally as important your brilliantly presented talent. Thank you, thank you.

Yes indeed, that one's on my list already and will probably be next choice when I return to this character. Glad to know you enjoyed it, as I recall it was one of your requests. I'm sorry it's taken me so long to get around to him... I actually began work on this one over a year ago but events intervened (long story) and I had to put it aside. Interesting, story "The case of the Dixon torpedo", published in 1894, after Doyle killed off his famous detective in the "the Final Problem". A Sherlock Holmes story in 1917 "The Adventure of the Bruce-Partington Plans" had a very similar story plot to "Dixon" accept the mysterious death on a railway track. Perhaps, Doyle lift some elements from Morrison’s story, the same way Morrison was heavily inspired by Doyle’s "the Naval Treaty." Giving each Author their own spin in this ‘game of telephone’ of writing.
@BitesizedAudio
@BitesizedAudio Жыл бұрын
Quite so; although 'Bruce-Partington' is a little earlier than that, it was first published in The Strand Magazine in December 1908 (1917 is the date of the book publication where a number of uncollected cases were brought together under the title 'His Last Bow'). Another commenter suggested that Morrison had stolen this plot from Doyle, but clearly that's not quite the case... The Naval Treaty, as you note, is perhaps a closer parallel. But either way, I think it shines an interesting sidelight on how "stolen government secrets" were obviously something of a hot topic in crime fiction in the couple of decades leading up to the First World War. Agatha Christie does something similar in the much later story shortly before World War II, 'The Impossible Theft'

Finding a story of yours I have not heard is impossible. You should number them.
@BitesizedAudio
@BitesizedAudio Жыл бұрын
Hmm. I'm not sure how that would work, as the stories are generally all stand-alone and can be listened to in any order. I think numbering them would confuse people and make it look as if I want people to listen in the order I dictate, which might be off-putting especially for new listeners. In any case, it's certainly not impossible to identify stories you've not heard yet: if you go to the main videos page - www.youtube.com/@BitesizedAudio/videos - stories already listened to should appear with a red line underneath them (though this might vary depending on your browser... it works in Edge, Chrome, Firefox and on the android app, not sure about other devices). I hope that helps!

Another writer who nicked the initial premise from the Adventure of the Bruce Partington plans :)
@BitesizedAudio
@BitesizedAudio Жыл бұрын
Yes I noticed the similarities as well, although in fact this story was written in 1894 and Conan Doyle wrote The Bruce Partington Plans in 1908 (and set it in 1895), so perhaps Doyle was nicking the idea from Morrison! Actually, the premise of stolen government papers also drove the plot of his earlier Holmes story 'The Naval Treaty' (November 1893), so perhaps that's the original inspiration. Either way, submarine design espionage was clearly big business in the 1890s!
@SuperBartles
@SuperBartles Жыл бұрын
@@BitesizedAudio heh, so in a sense ACD may have done the nicking. I do remember another story by a different author about submarine plans - I thought it was on your channel but I've listened to an awful lot of stories online :)

I feel the kibbitsing monster trying to slay me. I have such questions. Engineer's drawings are normally huge papers. As he said they wouldn't hide in any pocket. They don't fold well. Not folded, rolled up, I'm sure.. I was wondering if briefcases were searched. Coats were, but cases, or valises? It's the man with the walking stick. That's it. Oh. The monster won. Phooey! Ha.

@BitesizedAudio
@BitesizedAudio Жыл бұрын
There is indeed. One of main alterations being the complete removal of Martin Hewitt, to be replaced by another detective! For reasons I'm not completely clear about; although it is a few years since I saw that episode so I can't recall the details. It's odd, because the character of Martin Hewitt did appear in at least one other episode of that series, 'The Case of Laker, Absconded', played by Peter Barkworth
