That "logic" that the courts used is absolutely insane and I hear people using a lot of that rhetoric to this day. "Willfully blind" is a charitable interpretation of it.

I appreciate this as a new series. In school I was definitely taught, over years of explicit and implicit lessons, that the US Supreme Court was always right, essentially that their decisions were infallible.

Man = an imperfect being & a imperfect being can never truly be infallible. Also note how the Roman Catholic Church or Popes back in the day also claimed to be infallible. Also low-key making themselves = to God almighty on this earth which is simply ridiculous and impossible + just straight up blasphemy

@@AfroPick82 Kind of ironic just how much blasphemy the church has been guilty of. I'm not religious myself, but I am frequently staggered by how much is commonly accepted as truth that doesn't appear _anywhere_ in any of the religious texts.

Thank you for the education! As a Buffalo resident, maps of our city clearly outline how racial segregation effected industry and neighborhood building. It's clear as day, even a hundred years later. Also, the color changes from warm to cool and back are giving me "Tell me you live in the Midwest without telling me you live in the Midwest."

The way school history in general is taught very 'oh, the poor people of the past were so naive and didnt know any better, they did the very best they could.' It wasn't until I was taking a history course in college when I began to learn that history wasn't always moral or "it just so happened." A lot of eff'd up things happened very deliberately, either through hate or one party actually trying to help. It's wild to think that without the Plessy v Ferguson case segregation maybe wouldn't have gotten to be so horrible. Maybe. It's also a shame that those people were so willing to be "blind."

I really recommend the books Caste and The Warmth of Other Suns by Isabel Wilkerson. They are both non-fiction books about race in America, though Caste is also about the Nazis and the Indian caste system. If I had to pick one that was my favorite it would be The Warmth of Other Suns, which details the Great Migration of black folks from the South moving up North, and is told essentially through the eyes of three different migrants at different times from different places to different places. They are both just amazing books.

They still try their best to keep the schools segregated in south Louisiana. In the small town I grew up in the public school was 90% to 95% black and the private school was 90% to 95% white. This still continues to this day. We even had a racially segregated senior prom. The black students attended the school prom and the white kids and their parents had their own private prom.

I think it's so important to point out wherever and whenever possible what BS the whole "oh it was another time they didn't know any better" argument is. They did know better; people in those times opposed it and people who supported it knew what they were doing. They just had the institutional backing to get away with it. For Harlan to be the one lay out what was obviously really going on here puts a harsh and unflattering spotlight on the rest of this court.

I think we can empathize with how they were raised and the societal attitude at the time. You have to remember people couldn’t just say “I’m pro equality for everyone” and people would just respectfully disagree. They too would oftentimes be socially ostracized, lose their jobs and livelihood, and also be at risk for potential physical harm. It’s extremely easy for us to sit here and judge when we don’t have those factors to consider. I’d love to think I would’ve been actively working towards removing discriminatory laws, but I’ve never been in the situation where I thought stating my viewpoint would cost me my social and economic wellbeing.

See the book "The Great Dissenter" by Peter Canellos. It is about John Harlan but the very interesting part of it involves Robert Harlan. Robert Harlan was a former slave that might have been the brother of John Harlan. He became a civil rights leader in Ohio and helped the career of John Harlan.

One odd consequence of the US racial segregation policies led to the "Battle of Bamber Bridge" en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Bamber_Bridge. Basically the US army attempted to enforce segregation in US units stationed in the UK. This went as far as telling the village of Bamber Bridge to racially segregate the pubs. The village response was to make ALL the pubs "black soldiers only" and effectively ban white US soldiers from the pubs. This led to increased tensions and when the MP's attempted to arrest a black soldier for improper uniform the locals got involved on the black soldiers side. The MPs called for reinforcement and in the ensuing confrontation a black soldier was killed. This in turn led to an armed confrontation back at the barraks.

I’m sure Americans are aware of apartheid’s existence and its similarities with the Jim Crow laws. The difference that apartheid happened much later (1948-1991) and it was still implemented when the US overturned this horrible ruling via Brown v. Board of Education (1954) and later abolished anti-miscegenation laws (which prohibited interracial marriages) in the remaining 16 US states via Loving v. Virginia (1967).

The violation of civil rights was of not providing equality in the separation...the drinking fountain photo obviously shows the problem that there isn't equal fountains There's an equivalent violation occurring across-the-board country in education ...by the distribution of funding .... where the bulk of any school system funding comes from property taxes which in defacto poor areas are poorly funded compared to wealthy school districts ...but a more heinous in justice is in states that fund their schools from the state level though profits generated from lottery sales...more of which come from poor areas and then the state equaly portions out the money to all the districts so the poorly funded school districs literally are subsiding the wealthy schools..... so equal education is impossible and must violate the 14th ammendment equality clause

Thank you, thank you, thank you so much for this. It blows my mind that I knew about this from studying US politics as a foreigner abroad over 30 years ago and Americans today don't know..IN AMERICA...and will know even less once DeSantis and co are done. The concept that this thinking has died in America is so false. The number of times white people - who do not consider themselves racist - ask Black people what they are doing in a particular apartment complex, street, park, neighbourhood, area of town reveals how much this drives too many. The 'you don't belong here/ in intimate spaces I exist UNLESS I AM OK WITH IT usually applies to better status/ facilities - even on planes. This is the last bastion of 'respectable racism' that doesn't openly use the n word or lynch, but isn't too adverse to it. Again, thank you.

I would like to believe America is making huge progress with respect to it's Supreme Court and it's Laws. But I'd also they have a near impossible task if we want the kind of world we want. I might point out - and I sort of take this seriously - that there was a time where South America and parts of Asia and Africa were famous for Cannibalistic Tribes. It may have been safe and proper for the Supreme Court to allow "Separate but Equal" in the context that existed in the world at that time. If White and Black cultures were significantly different then peoples should be treated differently. Today the more obvious objections people might have had to Slavery or Separate but Equal has given way to kids who'd rather spend time with Blacks than their own people and talking about "discrimination" in terms of statistics and data gathering. A recent video I watched mentioned a Black sounding name like Dante had less chance of getting a job than a more white sounding name like David. Now David is a popular name. Quite possibly a company could have 10 "David's" applying for a job and no one named "Dante". I'm not sure what the point of this is exactly - except that people told Arnold Schwartzenegger that he should change his name and he went on to success in the Movies and Bodybuilding and as Governor of California. I simply point out that Plessy decision made sense in it's day. It is what America believed at the time.

I am sure this comment will be deleted but I hope you at least read this. I find it interesting you turned off comments for your defense of amber heard video. I empathize with your experience, I was in a very similar situation in my first relationship at 18. It was mutually abusive emotionally and incredibly toxic, it was certainly traumatizing. I was also in another awful relationship in my early 20s but the only difference was this time, that ex did physically abuse me. During the last instance of violence, I fought back but only in an attempt to restrain him and stop the fight. I ended up having to run from the house and hide for a couple hours before someone could insure my safety to get my things and leave. This is why I find it incredibly disingenuous to act like mutual abuse is somehow still between one abuser and one victim. My mutually abusive relationship was incredibly painful and even traumatizing at times but that didn't make me the victim anymore than he was. We hurt eachother, repeatedly. Not because we were abusers but because we were immature and did not know how to be in a healthy relationship. My abuser, however, charmed me and drew me in with this all encompassing love before he broke me down and ruled over me with an iron fist. He isolated me and had total control over the relationship. I do not mean to trivialize your trauma or anyone who was in a mutually abusive relationship because I know how painful that can be. But to act like the power dynamic is somehow the same in one-sided abuse actually trivializes those experiences. That said, your own story is vastly different from amber heards. I'm not going to litigate the case here but amber heard is a proven liar and she lied in the most disgusting and reprehensible ways, weaponizing victims of dv for her own purposes before lying about donating millions to a children's hospital in an attempt to control the narrative then lied about lying about that! That's why amber was ridiculed relentlessly, it isn't because she spoke out about her alleged abuse. Its because amber lied repeatedly and tried to gaslight everybody like an abuser always will. The abuse she described is unusually cruel, indicative of true sadism. The injuries amber would have sustained from the abuse she described would have been so much worse than the photos she presented. My abuser wasn't johnnys size, didn't wear rings but when he punched in the face over a dozen times, my face was swollen, black and blue and had cuts on it. There was no chance I could hide that with makeup well enough to go on television and look just fine. I ultimately had to call out sick for work for a week before I could conceal my injuries well enough to go out in public. Even still, coworkers knew something was wrong. Friends and family hated him because he isolated me from them, they knew he was no good even though they never saw my injuries. Never in a million years would he have permitted me to move my friends and sister into our home. In their text messages, it's very clear who had more control in the relationship. You said yourself that in your own mutually abusive relationship, you believed you were the bad guy. In the text messages, johnny is constantly apologizing and amber is always criticizing him. If the roles were reversed, you would have totally crucified johnny depp and understandably so because it takes a truly reprehensible person to do what amber did. But because amber is a woman, you refuse to believe the evidence in front of you. If you were speaking on this issue in good faith, you wouldn't have disabled comments. If you believed what you were saying, you wouldn't have felt the need to disable comments. Your rational, lawyer side knows amber is no victim but your emotional side causes you to lie to yourself. There was a time I believed amber too, even at the start of this trial. But there's not a lack of evidence to support Amber's claims...there's a preponderance of evidence that disproves them and THAT is the issue. And for you to claim neutrality while defending amber heard and empathizing with her, just further highlights the fact that you aren't neutral. You WANT to believe amber. You claim neutrality because your logical side knows she's a liar. Where is your empathy for johnny? Why do you have no issue with the possibility (probability really) that she truly victimized him during and after their relationship and ruined his life? To highlight why amber should be believed, you pointed to a bench trial in the uk where amber heard was only a witness and as such, much of the evidence couldn't be presented in that trial. But you dismiss the fact that, in this trial, a jury of her peers found the exact opposite to be true and that she had no credibility. The amount of evidence that was allowed to be presented in this trial is FAR greater than what was allowed in the uk. Amber heard wasn't even able to be cross examined in the uk. You have to ignore almost all of the evidence and use ridiculously backwards logic (like that uk trial argument you made) to defend amber heard. If you believe her and nothing will change that then just say that with your chest but don't gaslight us by claiming neutrality. We know the difference.

I’m sorry you were abused! Please know there’s no such thing as “mutual abuse”. The term implies that abuse only goes one way. Abuse is abuse.

This is well written comment. I agree with both you and her , but i gotta say that the way people are treating Amber is unjustified. They never met her , they completly ignore johny's side of abuse and present him like a total saint. I don't support Amber but i do feel a bit of empathy for her , imagine the whole world hating you so furiously when the other person gets praised like a godsent angel when he also had a part in this. This situation actually gave people more excuses to think that the men is definitely the victim in the next case , they'll biased because this opened up a new world for them where now men are victims. Where were these people before ? When other men were suffering in these cases? Atleast hate both for what they

Have you seen the evidence and messages that were prevented from being shown in the trial by Johnny/his lawyers? There is also evidence against Johnny Depp that can be gathered from other parts of his life and his other relationships that are also suspicious. I honestly don't like either of them.

@@lukky6648 I will never tell someone not to be empathetic to anyone. That said, there is no previous relationship where johnny depp was abusive. Amber Heard hired a private detective to try to dig up dirt on him...and the private detective found literally zero credible people that said a single bad thing about johnny. In fact, the only person anyone spoke ill of is amber. The heard team admitted he was part of their team and he revealed the source of the only negative things anyone said about jd, confirmed by court documents as well as former coworkers of this person at depps club in Hollywood. This guy claimed jd pushed kate moss down the stairs, which she testified under oath that it never happened. He also claimed depp was a Satanist that had river Phoenix and his ex business partner killed which isn't even close to true. The guy was absolutely crazy and the PI for amber said the team immediately eliminated him as a potential witness. But guess who appears on the potential witness list in trial documents? This guy they were never going to call for the stand. This is a tactic they used at trial to try to sway public opinion. They had this long list of people that they claim witnessed different awful things...and yet so few witnesses were called by Amber's team. And because they wouldn't call these witnesses, their stories couldn't be brought up at trial. That's why when amber mentioned Kate moss and the stair incident, jds team was able to call her to the stand and discredit that claim. Why didn't they call all these different witnesses? Because either they made unsubstantiated claims that are easily disprovable or they were not actually going to testify to all the bs amber claimed. What you're saying about all this "evidence" that wasn't in the trial are lies straight from amber and her team. There is no real evidence that was suppressed, it was suppressed because it was ruled inadmissible by the court, which means it's not real evidence. It's hearsay or improper in one way or another. Amber claimed there were medical records that proved her claims...but court documents are public record. And there were no medical records that amber was referring to that was ever presented to the court. They are LYING and news media are enabling her to do so. Johnny depp is far from an angel...but he absolutely is the victim. He's what amber tried to claim she was: an imperfect victim. But depp never provably lied about donating money to children with cancer. He never got caught on recording admitting to abusing amber heard. He never made false claims in a deposition that 3 police officers said weren't true. He never sent doctored videos to tmz in an attempt to launch a media campaign against heard to secure a favorable financial settlement in their divorce. He didn't go public as this innocent victim of DV when there is a preponderance of evidence that he was the abuser. He didn't lie about SA. He didnt slip up and admit to using a bruise kit and explain the process of creating a bruise while explaining how he allegedly covered up her bruises. He didnt claim to have sustained a broken nose and then backtrack by saying he wasnt sure if it was broken after this was disproven easily (that is admitted perjury by the way). Amber Heard did all of this and thats not speculation. Court documents prove these things, her own testimony prove these things and witness testimony proves these things. And she continues to lie and manipulate people who clearly haven't kept up with the case. THAT is why people hate amber heard. She is a horrible person, people don't do what she did. If you'd like to posit any specific evidence, I would be happy to address it. Because there is none that is credible that show depp is anymore than toxic in a relationship with an abuser. This was bs from the start, amber heard absolutely fabricated this whole thing and she admits to it in a recording that wasn't allowed in the trial. There were a couple audio recordings that weren't put in the trial that paint very vividly the person she is. This is why amber and her team tried (unsuccessfully) to suppress the court documents from being released. You can find them yourself by searching depp v heard Virginia court documents. I believe your heart is in the right place but I hope you see why you are misguided and incorrect in your assertions. It's NEVER wrong to support a victim, EVER. The only people that will use this case against women are awful people. The vast majority of people like to educate themselves on the facts and merits of each case specifically, that's why they despise amber heard. Just like they would have despised johnny depp had he done what amber claimed he did or had he done what amber has been proven to have done. Amber deserves what she's gotten, she is a liar and an abuser and, to put it in as plain of terms as possible, she is a bad person.

@@DQABlack I have seen most relevant court documents. And no, there isn't any previous instances of dv in any of his previous relationships, that is a lie. Have you heard the audio of amber that were prevented from being show at trial of her admitting she coordinated this whole thing to secure a favorable divorce settlement and the other one where admitted to being the one that hurt johnny in Australia (where she claimed in court the SA occurred)? Heards team had nothing on johnny, which is why they called so very few actual witnesses even though they had a dozens on their list they could have called. I'm not sure if you're part of the "shooters for amber" group or if you're just woefully misinformed, but you should do your research if you're not part of that group. All the court documents are available online because court documents are public record in this country. If you want to actually know the facts of this case, you can find everything online if you're willing to read through boring legal jargon for hours and hours on end. Thankfully, I'm a nerd and enjoy reading lol

Yeah, it is. When Plessy was decided, the entire country only had 60 million people. There was no mass media at all. There were no antibiotics. And so on. In addition to the fact that the decision's been reversed, it was so long ago that it's meaningless. Unless you're a liberal and you want to pretend it's still important to piss people off and garner emotional support.
