It has often been said that this watch is the best value for money. But also in my opinion the Casio G-Shock GM5610 is even better. Yes it costs five times more at around $100 but it is far more durable and accurate due to radio controlled time keeping. And it is solar powered. Just a perfect time piece.
@furzkram2 жыл бұрын
The pushers are INCREDIBLY hard to operate on the GW-M5610 (and all similar G-Shocks). Aside that, it needs TWO pushers to switch to world time and cycle through the modes - on the AE it's simply a repeated push of the lower right pusher. And lastly, the time zone displays above the time and doesn't scroll on the AE. In my humble opinion it's way easier to operate and more legible than any of the G-Shocks - for a fraction of the money.

I absolutely love mine. It has been a comfortable, reliable companion for years and I have taken it on almost every holiday. Easy to read at a glance, easy to use as a GMT, its light, its durable enough for 99% of regular users and if it does get lost, broken or stolen big deal, for the cost of going to Starbucks with a friend ($20-30) you can just replace it. In my opinion the only other thing that could improve the AE-1200 is if they did a solar version.

My favorite Casio, and daily 24/7 wear watch is the G-Shock GWM5610-1, modified with a 22mm strap adapter and a Bond-style soft ballistic nylon strap. It doesn't compare well to the AE-1200 for value, except that I specifically want the solar and radio control features. However, it'll run closer to $150 after swapping out the strap and it has less total features than the AE-1200, though the ones it has are exactly what I need and I find the display easier to read.

I went to Walmart earlier, looked at the watches, and had an MQ24, F91W, and an AE-1200WH in my cart. As someone who has family and friends in different time zones, I thought it would be good to have it. I also travel every couple of years, so this would certainly come in handy for that. Even though I have 6.5" or 16.5 cm wrists, I find that this watch wears very comfortably, much like a square G-Shock DW-5600. I like the features, the light's pretty good (though not as good as the EL lights), it's easy to read, and the functions weren't too bad once I got the hang of it. Plus you can call up a fourth time zone ("World") for querying any time zone ad-hoc while cycling through the functions - which remembers the last timezone displayed. You can make any of the three home times "the" main home time by holding down a button longer while it's being displayed.

Really love this review and the honest take on the benefits of quartz! Am I sensing a change in the air in the watch world? Teddy Baldassarre also just a vid on quartz vs mechanical where he laid out the advantages pretty bluntly. I completely agree that quartz really made timekeeping something for the masses, and it's refreshing to see it discussed so openly - I had an F91W when I was about 9 or 10. Imagine giving a 9-year a $300,000 Patek Philippe ;) Another watch to consider - at a slightly higher price point - is the G-LIDE series. I've recently picked up a GBX100 and just love it. It has a negative display but one that is larger and far more legible than the typical negatives on the rest of the Casio lineup. Even if you don't use the tide functions (which I have no use for), the rest of the basic time/stopwatch/alarm features make it a great piece.
@patrickbrcr2 жыл бұрын
The watch world has been well aware of the advantages of quartz since the late 70s. Mechanical watches survived the quartz crisis of the 80s. Mechanical watchmaking is stronger in 2022 (despite quartz, solar, and smart watches) than ever.

I purchased a G-Shock Tough Solar, Wave Ceptor, 20-Bar Water Resistant, CASIO model GW-5600J in early 2004. I wore it continuously for at least 14 years, working at an automotive manufacturing plant as an industrial electrician. I used to tease my father who had a Rolex Day-Date by saying I had the better watch as it was more accurate and has many more functions "complications". I still have it and wear it when out on thermal imaging jobs in manufacturing facilities! Everything on the time piece still works yet there are scratches on the crystal, dings in the band, and the little sleeve that retains the extra band length broke off, so I just trimmed the band so the extra length past the buckle doesn't hang out. (can I get a new band for it?) I think I paid about $40 for it at a Sears store, 2004. Talk about quality and durability!

So by this logic I think you could make a stronger case for the G-Shock GMW5610-1 being the perfect watch. I bought this watch about a year ago for $16.50 on Amazon, and it is the best watch for the money, you can buy. My main complaint would be the plastic crystal, that scratches easily. Many websites claim this model has a mineral crystal. I did buy some screen protectors for the crystal, but I couldn't find and tempered glass versions. Ever since I bought my Steeldive SD1970, that has been my daily watch, and my Casio AE1200 has sat on the bedside table. Automatic watches are almost as needy as smartwatches, and need to be worn almost daily to keep running. The SD1970 has the advantage of being hard to damage, with its ceramic bezel and sapphire crystal. I also have a couple of tungsten and sapphire watches that can be warn daily, and keep looking like brand new, for many years. Unfortunately, they need battery changes every few years.

Buy some poly watch or any kind of proprietary brass or chrome polisher. Even car paint restorer. Use Q Tips and cotton pads. The crystal will look like new. The Steeldive 1970, even as a Seiko homage, is still an absolute legend. Wouldn't be without one. I'm with you pal. 👍

I wore Made in Japan Casio digital watches with analog hands throughout high school back in the 90's. They were very accurate and fairly reliable watches, but the straps would only last 2 to 3 years, and they would break. The genuine Casio straps are not cheap and they would cost around 15 to 20 dollars to replace. The face of the watch was made out of a very scratchable plastic. Also, after two battery changes, the watch wouldn't be water resistant anymore. In my opinion, Citizen Eco-Drive watches with a metal bands are the best affordable watches ever made! Current (made within the past several years) Citizen Eco-Drive batteries are designed to last 40 years before it needs to be replaced!! Eco-Drive watches uses sunlight to charge its batteries. My Citizen watch cost me 200 dollars, so the cost per wear each year is only 5 dollars. The water resistant rating is 200 metres which is amazing for a dressy sporty watch that isn't a Diver's watch. These Citizen metal straps are rock solid and they don't break like plastic/rubber straps!

@@M0WWS I guess we don't need to be too obsessive to the accuracy of a quartz watch. By design, the accuracy of a quartz, even at lower price point, is already outstanding, particularly in compare with mechanical watch. Having atomic feature can't make it more "accuracy" but only make the adjustment very frequently, i.e. 3 times a day with the signal. If you do the adjustment manually as frequently as that, the "accuracy" would be the same. BTW, quartz watch is composed of electronics which would wear out sometimes eventually, just a matter of time.

I have often looked at watches with their various degrees of asking prices and the prevailing question that comes to mind is, "why is that watch so expensive ?" When you see watches in the store display cases they are presented more as a piece of jewelry than merely a time keeping device [a watch]. A 'cheaper' watch has a band. The 'pricey' watch has a bracelet. I bought 2 "Royales", the WH- all black and the WHD- stainless. The black is for work and the stainless is for casual. Both totaled roughly 50 Bucks. I could go on but this gentleman said it best. Yup it's the GOAT ! $300 THOUSAND ??!! That's a HOUSE ! I digress.

I'm one of those "old Guys" (66 years old) who was taught back when he was young that there are 3 things you need to carry at all times when you work for someone. Those being: a pen/pencil, a pocket knife, and a watch (I know most people these days don't usually have any of those items on them, LOL). The pen/pencil for when you need to make a list/sign something/draw with/etc, the pocket knife for cutting things (naturally), and the watch because when you are being paid by the hour, you need to be able to tell when you started the job and when you finish or when the end of your shift is. I used to wear a Casio G-Shock for a long time but didn't use the Functions and didn't really like the digital watch face. So for the last couple of years, I've just been wearing a cheap analog face Casio and that's all I need, so I'm happy with it. Now my Son has given me an Apple 8 Smart Watch to go along with the I-Phone he gave me a couple of months ago and I'm trying to get used to the Apple watch (and phone). While it does have a ton of different uses, in the end all I want is a watch that will let me know the time, which the Casio did really well. Plus, like you say, with the Casio I don't have to work about hitting the face on something and shattering it or what I may put my hand in while out in the garage nor does it have to be charged up everyday.
