This video is one that was requested by a bunch of commenters. This is a blind solve, meaning that I've never solved this puzzle before, and I talk through what I'm thinking about as I solve it. If you want to see more of these types of videos, let me know in the comments!

next time you do a blind solve, if you're gonna edit the video down you should have a timer in the corner to show how long it takes you. great stuff none the less, i find these videos so satisfying.

@FLEBpuzzles

It took me somewhere between 10 and 11 minutes, according to the amount of footage I took. Not super fast, but I was happy with the time! Next time I'll time it!

FLEB i think editing the videos down is definitely the way to go then. saves having minutes of you just randomly twisting and going down dead ends. the timer would be cool though.

Awesome! It was great to hear your explanations and understand how you solved this. The puzzle itself is interesting too, I like the way you're allowed to rotate the piece around to align the two pieces correctly.
@FLEBpuzzles

Thank you! I thought it was a neat puzzle too. It's a 2 star in terms of difficulty, according to Hanayama, so it's not very hard, but it was a lot of fun to solve! I really like the idea of needing rotations but blocking them in most cases, so you have to use unusual orientations to remove the pieces.

Yep! Two come to mind immediately. 1. I was gifted a custom puzzlehunt for my wedding, which consisted of 20 some puzzles and a 4 foot x 2 foot x 2 foot box filled with electronics. My wife and I are stuck on the last puzzle, but we'll hopefully solve it this month! 2. The last puzzle of the Maze of Games is really difficult. At last year's GenCon, I talked to Mike Selinker about it, and he told me that I was the closest to the answer out of anyone he's seen, but I still haven't solved it! A few months ago, the "Lotus Box" would have been an answer to that question, but I finally sat down and worked out what I was missing.

A lot of the Hanayama cast puzzles have very similar steps to this one, requiring you to rotate and re-insert the pieces in order to solve it. A similar puzzle to this one (which was far more difficult) would be the Hanayama Twist. It adds a maze to it, which was very interesting to me. Another unique challenge would be the Hanayama Marble, and one of the more difficult ones would be the Hanayama Enigma. I recommend all of them (really, all Hanayama puzzles are pretty fun). Also, really loving RYB. Really well-designed.

Have you ever actually thought about doing a puzzle blindfolded? Not a blind puzzle or anything but maybe a puzzle that you have solved and think is fairly difficult. This is by Hanayama, so it's available lots of places. Searching google for "cast keyring" should bring up a couple places where it's sold.

You did a lot of nearly doing the move and then backing up instead of completing it. For example at the end you rotated the piece the way you wanted, but instead of trying to pull it out you went back and redid the rotation to check if it went the way you wanted it to. I probably would be trying to pull it out after every move. Is there a reason you aren't doing that?

This puzzle is "maze-like", so I wanted to make sure I knew where I was in the maze and could back out to a position I was pretty sure was correct. When I undid that move at the end, I wanted to make sure that the move was doing what I wanted it to. I could have pulled it out at that point, but I was just being careful!

I can't tell too easily because the pieces are never oriented the same way, but it looks like the two halves are identical to eachother? Is that correct?

They are! I only noticed that after I solved the puzzle, or I could have solved it more quickly!

Sure! I mostly design puzzlehunt puzzles for competitions. Here's an example: www.baphl.org/15/static/puzzles/puzzle_1-8.pdf The answer is an English word or phrase!
