Watching their interviews makes me appreciate the improvised banter and eccentricities of their characters on the show and how naturally they embody their characters... I watched a different interview where they discussed that that basically was the idea, they didn't want them to put on big piratey accents and stuff but just wanted to let them be themselves as the characters which I think is great and makes them so real

The first one cracks me up, tons of pirates wore eye patches. Had nothing to do with having one eye, old ships were really dark below deck. And they didn’t want candles burning in their wooden ship. So they wore an eye patch on one eye to preserve their night vision in at least one eye. You could go below deck and still see. Was especially useful when attacking other ships.

I love this show. It started out as a silly funny strange eccentric folly. By the end I was so enamored with Blackbeard and Steed that I could not stand the thought of no second season. Please bring back more. Everyone is wonderful in this show.

Awesome video. A bit of eye patch trivia: they actually *were* commonly worn in the course of working on a ship, but not to cover lost eyes. You wore it on deck over one eye, and switched it to the other eye when you went below deck so you didn't have to wait for your eyes to adjust to adjust to the darkness. Lighting was generally very poor below deck, with only a few oil lanterns to provide a little illumination. The eyepatch trick saved time and prevented accidents.

Some pirates actually wore eyepatches, but not because they had gotten injured. If one eye is covered with a patch, that eye will not be acclimated to the brightness on deck, so when they get bellow deck (for example during a raid) they could really quickly be able to see by just removing the eye patch, giving them an advantage when looting and fighting. HBO has really done this show DIRTY. Absolutely NO promotion. Had no clue it even existed until Twitter went crazy near the end. And i have HBO MAX and I’m on there fairly frequently. But all i ever saw them push was that Victorian New York version of downton abbey. And now they’re refusing to renew it for a 2nd season?? After they left it on a major cliffhanger? They wouldn’t have done such things were it straight & everyone knows it. 🙄
