Breeding fish is pretty difficult. I think it's one of those things were if it doesn't work you get nothing, if it does you have 50,000 babies. I know with Koi the other fish beat the eggs out of the pregnant females. Had a couple get beat to death against the rocks and two get thrown from the pond and die. Only successful breeding we had was they tore a hole in the mothers side, and we had to pull her out, one carp got caught with her. We think the fish either dropped her eggs in the bucket, which we then dumped back in, or the shock of getting pulled from the water made her release. Either way a couple months later I notice little colorful fish swimmin around. Nature is brutal, that's why it cracks me up when people do the "As nature intended" stuff.

Love the series! From what I have seen on catfish breeding they inject hormones into the female so that she would release the eggs and then they harvest the sperm from the male fish to fertilise them. Might be something to look into (if you can get a hold of those hormones). After that you get the difficulty of keeping the eggs and the hatchlings alive with brine shrimp and oxygenation :) Good luck, and the result are amazing breeding or not!
@lifeinthailand7 жыл бұрын
I have seen that, I was hoping nature would help but not this time.

Lifeinthailand I know I am late to the party and I am not sure if this works with most fish or if it is different for most species, but I have studied up on tilapia, when trying for babies, one is supposed to use 5 females to 1 male and then in the tank they take 5 pieces stacked 3 X 2 and tied or glued together with aquarium glue, of PVC just big enough for 1 female fish in each piece by diameter/circumfrence and length and place at one end of tub/tote/aquarium and at other end a flower pot or something kind of big enough for the mail to be behind! I think the female lays her eggs in the pot and goes, then he feterlizes, she picks up and then resides in tube until babies are ready! It is probably different for your fish in some measures but maybe the whole hide n seek thing will work and I think the more females to one male will be better. Kind of same prinipal as with roosters 1 to every 15 or less! Anyway, good luck if you decide to try again, and thanks for your videos, I love them!!!

if it was me all joking aside, I would dig a pond and just let them go at it naturally, I am pretty sure you could harvest enough fry to bring on in the tanks if the fish have a quiet natural habitat to go about in and breed, sometimes without the natural stimuli things just wont breed no matter how right you think you have it, go with nature dude and let them crack on lol

yes, nothing impossible for an engineer! I think as long as you believe in the realisation of something as long you have the chance to open the right door - anyhow, anywhen, but it will happen. Failures are the possible results of a good trial and error method, so one has to expect and love them, since they teach you at least what is not so great, if not even more. Even huge inventions can be based on failures - fogetting to clean the lab results sometimes in Penicillin, so who knows what you can find in the catfish habitat, one day ;-) If something doesn't come as expected, if failures happen, such moments are the one side of the medal, and as long as you keep on trying you have always the chance to get the other side on top ;-)

I wonder if breeding is a seasonal thing triggered by the length of day or something.
@lifeinthailand7 жыл бұрын
It is a seasonal thing, they normally breed during the rainy season, when the rainy season was over I stopped the experiment, the chance of it working was very small anyway but was worth a try.

Walking catfish need a big influx of fresh water to stimulate breeding. They can be bred anytime of the year. The trigger for breeding is that "new" water. It mimics the rainy season and gets them going. Also they need grass or some sort of vegetation to lay their eggs on in the little cave. I breed some in a aquarium before and after a 95% water change they would go at it. (Also the mating of walking catfish is gentle, the pair will nudge each other during courtship, aggressive behaviour usually means breeding attempts are not working) Your catfish seem to be African/Thai hybrids. clarias macrocephalus and clarias batrachus. Good luck next time! Practice makes perfect.

I decided to leave the breeding to the professionals, but I know a guy in Nigeria that is have a lot of success breeding them, so I might follow his lead one day.

I think with aggressive fish need 2 females per male when breeding so one doesn't get fully hurt and die off
@lifeinthailand7 жыл бұрын
A few people have said that, some said you need 2 males (I think that would be a nightmare) but might be worth another try at some point.

There must be a certain time of year when they breed naturally. So the hormones would be right you know what I mean. I wonder if that is the reason wrong time of year.

You need to create fake monsoon paddy field environment by dropping water as well as increasing temp to 28 which is normally happens in case of paddy field and paddy saplings as well as small material which female can dig before mate for egg drop. Also you need to put those two male and female which are together from birth and are king if couple from Starr.
@lifeinthailand6 жыл бұрын
Your probably right, I decided to leave the breeding to the professionals and I well buy the babies.
