SWERVE, MARTIN LUTHER! Mr. Richey explains the key elements of the Catholic Counter-Reformation, including the Council of Trent, the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), and Teresa of Avila. This lecture was designed specifically for students preparing for the AP European History exam, but this would be useful to students taking World History and Western Civilization courses, as well.

07:21 - Ignatius Loyola and the Jesuits
11:24 - Teresa of Avila and the Revival of Catholic Spirituality

I really enjoyed this video! As a Catholic I was furthered informed on the history of the religion I practice. I did not realize how little I knew about the Counter-Reformation and this video really helped clear all this information up! I specifically enjoyed the explanation of anathema, I had never been introduced to that term prior to watching this video lecture. Great video!

Thanks for setting the record strait on faith and works. I am a former Protestant that converted to the RCC after reading the early Church fathers and examining the historical evidence. Like most people I only knew what others told me about Catholicism. The linch pin for me was Irenaeus of Lyons. It is amazing to me how many people still reject the facts of history. I am thinking about a study of the negative effects of Luther and the reformers on western thought and culture. Any hints on how to get started?
@bejoysen4468
@bejoysen4468 7 жыл бұрын
Pretty late comment here, but reading Max Weber's work should give you a fair understanding of the effects of the Reformation on Western society. The entrepreneurial spirit brought about by the Calvinist work ethic and the independent spirit brought about by Luther's dismantling of church hierarchy both helped Northern European, Protestant countries develop and industrialize much faster than Southern Europe. The independence from the Catholic church and blind dogma certainly diversified Western thought and ended scholasticism(blindly following the works of Aristotle and arbitrarily dividing science into different branches) in favor of rationalism. The Christian(not modern) definition of a cult is any religion that borrows scripture but adds onto it doctrines that cannot be found in the Bible. Papal infallibility, hierarchical churches, and buying indulgences, cannot be found at all in the Bible, making Catholicism a cult(by the Christian definition.) Of course, your convictions may remain unchanged if you favor theocracy and abhor capitalism. I'll also point out that the Lutheran, Orthodox, and Catholic Churches have all either canonized or commemorated Irenaeus so that shouldn't really the linchpin for your conversion to Catholicism.

Just to say same here. Been a Catholic since Easter 2017. I credit the early Fathers as well. Also, Luther was even confessing Purgatory in the 95 theses. Lutherans don't point that out too often!

Speaking for the online Christian theology-philosophy/apologetics crowd here: there are a few things people on both sides might dispute about this. For example, the Protestants who say that Romanists teach salvation by works might mean the requirement of the sacraments for salvation (CCC 1129) rather than works of righteousness. Those who take this position might make a similar argument against Lutherans though, so those who argue this could be low-church Protestants who are more in-line with the Radical Reformation. The modern Romanists who accept Vatican 2 might argue that the Anathemas don't actually mean the person goes to Hell but is closer to excommunication. Similarly, most in both groups would deny infernalism (i.e. that Hell is fire), and a good portion may even advocate for annihilationism/conditional immortality or even universalism. As for what you said about Ignatius of Loyola and the "white is black if the Church says so," some have argued this this kind of thinking within the Counter-Reformation helped spark Enlightenment skepticism. I'm still becoming familiar with this idea, but there is a paper "Skepticism and the Counter-Reformation in France" by Richard H. Popkin that expounds upon it.

it would have been cool if you distinguished between the Catholic Reformation and the Counter Reformation. obviously the Council of Trent was reactionary to the Protestant Reformation (therefore counter reformation). however, there were several catholic groups who sought out reform such as the Theatines and Ursulines, and that wasn't quite reactionary to the protestant movement

So, if Catholics say you are saved by Grace, and not by works, but yet we, supposedly, have free-will. Then what then, if you obtain Grace, but don't use your free-will to do good works? Since Catholics see Salvation as a "partnership" between God, and the sinner. And the sinner didn't complete his/her half of the "partnership". Can God's Grace still save that sinner?

And satan is supposed to sit in place of The Most High in the temple of The Most High, which is built by Him self because man CAN NOT build a temple he would reside in. Does not it stand to reason that what we call “anti christ“ which means “in place of YAHUWAH” Sits inside us as an imposter to the true Son of The Most High. Folks we are all looking to a false nation of false chosen people that may or may not build a false Temple. “The father of lies has the whole world deceived” Can you show me where it says “except Christians. Further more Rome had about 20 gods the prayed to. The name for all the gods as a group was called CHRISTO And the letter “j” didn’t exist prior to 1650 So tell me anyone HOW COULD THE NAME JESUS CHRIST BE A SACRED NAME?! If you gave the deceiver his proper respect as to the ability he has to get us to believe his lies then this will be plausible to you. And only through a hatred for ones pride and ego, along with true love of humility will but a few of you be able to grasp a deception so vast and real. Do not believe what I’ve said here RESEARCH WHAT I SAID TO YOU IF YOU GOT TO CHURCH YOUR PROBABLY NOT GOING TO EVER BELIEVE UNFORTUNATELY TRADITION IS VALUED MORE THAN TRUTH the WHOLE world wonders after the beast Mans system The system of lies The beast is the laws of men the nations of men. That's about the strongest sounding curse I've every heard. "Anethema" I must admit, to those Catholic priests who do as they are supposed to, and remain celebate, I see them as brave and strong. While I can never believe scripture or history truly teaches clergy must be celebate (consider the place were christian monastism began was Egypt, yet all lower Copt Priests are married), I still can see some value in it, particularly in the higher positions. However, I do see one issue. Local priests deal with families. It seems odd that your spiritual counciller and moral leader would not have practical education in the matter of family life. Still, interesting.

Tom, Congratulations, I just found your vids, been watching them all morning. I just wanted to say you have a little mistake on this one. Indulgences are not "forgiveness of sins", But, cleaning the "shame" of the sins already forgiven by confession. For catholic doctrine The "shame" of the sin it's what causes time in the purgatory" So indulgences are like "time gift" of of purgatory.

+Raul Paez Aren't indulgences the selling of passes to heaven? The church made the people think that they can buy their way to heaven. If they pay a high amount then chances are they can go to heaven but if it's not that much, they will still spend a short period of time at the purgatory but eventually still go to heaven. This is what I learned in my class. Correct me if I'm wrong.
@zeap87
@zeap87 8 жыл бұрын
Sorry it took so long for me to answer... (I usually don't use this platform). The answer is no. Indulgences is "less time" or "no time" in purgatory. But in order to have this benefit first you must go to purgatory in the first place. In other words, indulgences doesn't work at all if the person dies in mortal sin and therefore goes to hell. In fact, no matter even if you pay for the indulgence... if you are not in the state of grace (This means, without mortal sin) then the indulgence is not valid.... So in other words, Lets say Disney... indulgences is like having a "fast pass"... But that would not mean anything if you dont buy (go) to the park....

Oh wow. The counter reformation is so cool. This is new to me. There is so much fascinating stuff about Christian history. It is a rabbit hole. I like Catholic better. It has a lot of good stuff. There are just some flaws. Protestants started out with good intentions. Martain Luther is awesome. He is my favorite person 9f Christian history. I find him to be quite a bit more like Catholics than people think. Unfortunatly some Protestants went too far and got ruined. One unpleasent Protestant is Calvin. I rewatched the video on him in this channel. I find that not only does his view on salvation sucks, but the aesthetics sucks too. The video is good in being both very informative and very funny. There is something nice about the counter reformation. The catholic church basically did what Luther wanted them to do in the first place. They didn't have to split off to form new groups and a entire new branch. They just had to do some little things to clean up thier act. That's it. I am so glad that Catholics were willing to change. The best improvement is cleaning up the corruption of the churches. Even the indulgence payments were banned. Yey! Indulgences was the worst part of the Catholic Church. It is something that Luther wholeheartedly opposed. The improvement of priest education is nice. I would like to take this further are offer more religious education to the masses. Luther really started this with the translation and printing of the German Bible. I have learned what anathema is. I agree with the Catholics on the two points. Both grace and works are required for salvation. I prefer works to keep people accountable for thier actions. Faith is good in moderation. It frees people from sweating over tiny nitpicky things that don't even harm anyone. There are bad Christian groups out there that are fussy. So they need to be taken into account. One can break a nitpick rule if they drink coffee, go to the doctor, celebrate holidays, and use electricity among countless other things. Yet one is okay with doing such things, because Jesus will for give them. Free will is important. One clearly chooses salvation or domination. So let's say someone sells drugs to children. They are going to get busted big time. That was an act out of free will, and that is something to be accounted for. That person will get additional time in Purgatory for what they have done. Now someone refused the message of Jesus, sold drugs to children, shot down police, sped in thier car, ran over an old lady and a boy scout, and crashed dead into a tree. Then they are pretty much screwed. Murdering police alone can warrant a Hell sentence.. This hilarious anecdote shows how messed up Calvinism is. If the "elect" can get away with all of that, then that makes up for a pretty messed up salvation. The only good thing to come out of this mindset is Anne Hutchenson . She use that to go against some nasty lifestyle control in the American Puritans. Hutchenson is awesome. It is funny for Catholics to have three sources of authority. It is different from the Protestants that only have one. I think the best is to have two. This is something that is inbetween. One is the Bible. This is important for study. It also provides good foundation for all Christians regardless of branch. Two is tradition. There is a lot of good stuff here. There is saints, Purgatory and liturgy. It isn't in the Bible. However it is good for grounding the religion and easing connection to the divine. The one thing I would drop is clergy. This is the one main flaw with Catholics. The clergy are too powerful. Then that makes them dangerous, if they become currupt. I am not a huge fan of radical Protestants. However there are two denominations that are really awesome. They are Quaker and Babtist. One amazing thing that they both have in common is tht they minimize clergy and hierchy as much as humanly possible. So there is a low risk for the clergy to become dangerous. This is good. It is cool that the current pope, Francis, has toned down the power of 0riests in the Catholic Church. That is a surprising improvement. I hope he keeps that up.
@JasonRussoMetal
@JasonRussoMetal 4 жыл бұрын
Rome (maybe unofficially) does teach (today) that you can achieve salvation by good works alone. A RC Bishop told Ben Shapiro a practicing Jew he can attain salvation through keeping the law apart from Christ on the daily wire. Pope Francis told a little boy his atheist Dad is in heaven and to pray to him.. (this also assumes the atheist wasn't in purgatory).. The council of Trent taught that works increase and preserve your salvation so it's essentially faith+works. Anyone who says we are saved by faith alone is anathema. These anathemas still stand today although it would seem Rome no longer takes these very seriously since they no longer really excommunicate, or kill people who oppose Rome. Cannon 24 says "If any one saith, that the justice received is not preserved and also increased before God through good works; but that the said works are merely the fruits and signs of Justification obtained, but not a cause of the increase thereof; let him be anathema."

Also, it also a fallacy that Luther didn't believe in good works. Good works come forth after Grace is already obtained, through faith, to show that your faith was real, and that the sinner is truly saved. Good works stand as a testimony, or conformation of the Salvation already obtained, by God's Grace.

10:37 The woman who bore me wasn't catholic, and anything but infallible, but sure as hell believed in the 13th Rule. When, as a child, I would question some injustice or stupidity on her part she would say: "Don't you question my judgement mister; If I tell you the moon is made out of green cheese, then it's made of green cheese!" To forbid the questioning of authority, is as tyrannical as it gets. Doing so, reveals the true selfishness of those who make such absurd demands. No wonder there was a protest and reformation! For the record, I'm an agnostic theist; not a Christian.

Please be accurate. The Catholic Church condemns no one to hell. Anathema means not what you say: "When the Catholic Church uses the term, such as at the Council of Trent and in its official documents, it is in the sense of excommunication or being cut off from the life-giving unity of the Church. If someone knowingly and publicly denies a defined (de fidei definita) doctrine of the Catholic Church, he can be formally declared to be excommunicated, meaning that he no longer enjoys unity with the Catholic Church. That's why, for example, the Council of Trent said, "If anyone says that the sinner is justified by faith alone, meaning that nothing else is required to cooperate in order to obtain the grace of justification, and that it is not in any way necessary that he be prepared and disposed by the action of his own will, let him be anathema" (session VI, can. 9). This use of the term anathema has a very precise meaning: Let him be cut off from the Church, not let him be damned to hell. And this is done by the Church in her wisdom as a way of trying to bring the one in error to his senses - before it's too late and he is damned to hell by virtue of his obstinacy." www.catholic.com/quickquestions/does-the-church-condemn-those-who-disagree-with-its-teachings Romans 9:3 and Galatians 1:9 offer a biblical foundation for this word's use and the sense it's used.

Yes, you would be correct in the most literal sense, but I still think there's at least an implication, as traditionally, the Catholic Church has taught that there's no salvation outside the Church. While these teachings have been liberalized in recent centuries, the idea of being excommunicated carries the weight of being outside of the Church without means of salvation.

Excommunicating someone would, in the mind of the Catholic Church at that time, effectively have damned him unless he were later re-admitted to the Sacraments. The Fourth Lateran Council (1512-1517) re-affirmed St Cyprian's famous dictum: "Extra ecclesiam nulla salus", which means "outside the Church there is no salvation". The Catholic Church believed that grace was mediated through (and only through) its sacramental rituals. Therefore if a person were excommunicated without later being re-admitted to the Sacraments, he would, according to Church theological teaching, be deprived of salvific grace.

Really ? Martin Luther burn in hell' Did you really say that. ? You will be going there yourself if you don't get out of that False Christisnity. Please 're examine your position. I was a Roman Catholic for 20 years from birth. Totally mad for it but then I got born again. The Roman Catholic church is telling you the wrong doctrine ~ a combination of grace and works. But there is no combination _ it's either grace of works _ not a comnnation of the 2. i

6. Chee 6. Z 6. S Cheezs Best learn the fathers real name YAHUWAH AND HIS SONS REAL NAME YASHUAH. If we ourselves are a temple of The Most High. I had to leave My church to find TRUTH. SINCERELY LUKE. C

As someone who has both a degree in history and theology,, I would say he is pretty accurate in his presentation. However, his pronunciation of Latin and Greek terms is not correct. Lastly, his southern US accent ( I'm thinking maybe Texan here) is extremely annoying and distracting. One would think, with all his education, he would be able to speak standard American English, instead of this annoying southern US dialect.
