1987’s TV special titled “Cathy”, is one of the few mainstream, early era animated projects to appear on primetime network tv, that toed the line between classic cartoon comedy, with daring and revealing insight into society through unabashed self-exploration.
Based on the 1976 comic strip by Cathy Guisewite, which follows an animated version of its creator as she tackles the daily struggles of successfully balancing all facets of life, from her career, to dating, dealing with family, and challenges with self-worth, the comic was revolutionary in how painfully truthful it could be, while still maintaining an appealing, and marketable brand.
Would its themes be too depressing for people expecting a more lighthearted affair seeing as it's animated? Or would Cathy’s nervous energy prove to be contagious, and garner a whole other level of respect for the franchise? Let’s look at the 1987 CBS Television special: “Cathy”.
