Now my folks had a spilt foyer home with an open floor plan on what was a family room, no garage in this case. In the lower levels of this home ceiling diffusers were of course in the ceiling and with an open floor plan there was no left wall dividing the lower family room space in foyer area which acted like chase. In the winter the lower defusers were opened for heating. In cooling mode the lower defusers were closed completely to balance the system for cooling and vice versa for heating. It was a very difficult means to balance this system and very hard on it! but with the lower operating temps of a heat pump in heating mode it balanced very well, but when resistance heating was in use you could defiantly tell the lower space of this home was not heated nearly as well and effectively by being more uncomfortable during those times and the heating balance was lost due to higher output temperatures. Thought this might be of interest to some degree as well!

In my own home I installed a hi-low set up. In the winter I close off the high registers, in the summer I close off the low ones. I've offered this set up to customers when its been feasible but only twice has anyone opted for it because of course it raised the cost of the install but it makes a world of difference. I stole the idea from my friend whose house was set up like that. I wanted to do the same thing with the return but I got lazy.

That is the best setup for both heating and cooling, but you are right, no one wants to pay for it. They will, however, complain when it does not work well. GFM

What might the temps look like if a ceiling fan was running in the room with the ceiling register?

+RickMakes I would think it would go far to to eliminating the stratification of the air temps. GFM
