The Celebrity NFT Craze is Insufferable
Hey everyone welcome back to my channel! Today we're going to be looking at celebrities again but instead of definitively ranking cringey celebrity couples we're actually going to be looking at something much cringier... the scammy side of celebs. It's true even actual celebrities don't seem to be immune to pushing the same kind of scams to their audience that you see influencers typically fall into and this time it's NFTs. I'm sure if you've been on the internet in the past few months you've seen some iteration of a cartoon monkey or a lion or.. whatever other animal they've turned into a doodle circulating on the internet and they happen to be a common form of an NFT. If you're on Twitter you've definitely seen them considering it seems to be there and Discord that have the highest population of Crypto Bros pushing their products. But the thing is the crypto bros aren't new, what is new in the past month especially is what feels like a suspiciously choreographed wave of celebrities suddenly all coming out publicly praising NFTs.
People like Reese Witherspoon, Paris Hilton, Justin Bieber, Jimmy Fallon, Liam Payne and even our Goop lord Gwyneth have suddenly become extremely vocal about their new NFT purchases that happen to be... extremely ugly drawings of cartoon monkeys (i.e Bored Ape)? I don't think you could find a single person (who wouldn't profit off saying so) who actually thinks these monkey drawings are worth any kind of money and it's hilarious watching celebrities not only fork over millions of dollars for them but also stumble over themselves trying to convince their audience that not only do they LOVE their new NFTs but want to get their fans in on the fun too!
So i thought it'd be a fun video to look into the recent promotional tour that celebrities seem to be on with their NFTs this past month. If there are any other situations you can think of that have happened recently definitely be sure to share them below I'd love to hear about them lol. Also!! If you want a more informative take on NFTs in general I would definitely recommend this video: "Line Goes Up - The Problem With NFTs" by Folding Ideas that I recently saw, it was SO incredibly well done and insightful so if you've got the time I'd definitely suggest checking it out: • Line Goes Up - The Pro...
Otherwise I hope you guys enjoy the video! If you did feel free to subscribe and turn on notifications it really helps me out :)

the best explanation I ever saw for what nfts are was this: you go to a museum and ask to buy a painting, they say sure, but they have to go cut down a forest to make your receipt first, then they come back and give you the receipt, but not the painting, however, in some obscure broom closet in the museum, it's written down that you do infact own the painting (except somehow even dumber in this case because screenshotting exists)

@@LoveK1 basically anything that has to do with cryptocurrency is horrible for the environment. It’s pretty technical, but in layman’s term, computer takes lots of energy & all of these coins need to be “‘mined’” which takes SO MUCH MORE ENERGY. I just keep waiting for society to go “wait a minute, why are we all playing a big game of monopoly but in real life?”

I agree, the environmental impact is one of the things i hate most about nfts, but i think some people have been veering away from environmental arguments, because theres a possibility that the people making them could find a way around that and make more environmentally friendly nfts, in which case theyll prob be like, “well problem solved, we can continue selling this scam cause that was the only problem with it right?”. I wish the environmental destruction would be brought up more, but also i get why people want to target the direct root of “nfts are stupid and scammy” in general

@Marie to "mine" bitcoin, a computer basically has to be on and running at insane processing speeds. it generates pollution on a massive scale and to make it even more laughably shitty, there's nothing real even at the end of that "mining" effort. it's so gross.

As a freelance artist who is surrounded by other working artists I see NFTs people on the daily stealing their art and minting them without the artist's consent. The environmental impact is tremendous and even the more "green" ways to mint NFTs are still harmful. It's more about the money than the art (which you don't actually own if you buy an NFT) that's why most of it looks so bad, it's mass produced. Crypto bros are aiming to create a digital hierarchy with NFTs as proof of wealthiness (think real life art galleries). This on its own is such a dystopian and stupid idea. Overall I think that NFTs are actually harming most artists aside from the few lucky ones who decide to partake in this pyramid scheme. If you want to support artists commission them, tip them or buy their products.

No, if Shane Dawson sold an NFT of that tweet, you would not own the tweet. You would own the link to a screenshot of that tweet. A basic summary/example of what NFT's are that's easy to understand (for me at least) is basically this: Imagine you go to the grocery store, you head over to the banana's and take the barcode off the pack of banana's and pay for it at the checkout. You don't take the banana's themselves to the checkout, just the barcode. Then you're given the receipt and leave, while the banana's are still at the store where anyone could take them if they wanted. That's what NFT's are, you're not buying the banana's, you're just buying the barcode and the receipt that says you technically own the banana's, but you don't physically own them. With NFT's you're not buying a shitty JPEG of a monkey, you're just buying a digital receipt that again says that technically, you own the shitty monkey JPEG. After all of that, then imagine someone burns down an entire rainforest every time time someone buys a barcode for banana's, that's how NFTs are harmful.

The question is, though, why did people start selling five thousand dollar monkeys(and other stuff, and losing out on it) in the first place. And the answer kind of lies in the second part of your comment - unless it's a whole other concept where a reward for the time and thought spent is normalized, $25 is what people are willing to pay for your art. I'm not in any way criticizing you for paying as much as you can, nor am I defending NFTs - as an artist it's just interesting to me how these artworks could technically go for just as much if people would just commission them normally, but this exact thing not happening is, in my opinion, part of what triggered the birth of something as disastrous and useless as the NFT.

they are the ultimate form of buying something just to prove that you can. It's flexing taken to its most extreme, similar to people buying absurdly priced clothes , jewelry, cars, physical art etc. but at least with those things they still had a function/purpose. NFT's are literally just people spending absurd amounts of money on NOTHING to show that they simply can afford too. The biggest downsides being a) all the lower class people falling into the trend when the market is definitely going to crash at some point and when it does most wealthy people would've already cashed out and b) the environmental damage NFT's cause all for a dick-measuring contest.

I hate people saying that they are the "future of art", when 90% of the not bros don't give a shit about the art, I hate the absolute eyesores that are being created, I hate that people are spending millions of dollars on a picture they could make on a character creator but are baffled when artists ask for less than 100 dollars for a completely original and completely custom (and way better looking) piece of art, and in general I just hate the crypto community dragging artists into their bullshit. They always say it's to "revolutionize art trade" but they don't care about art, they care about scamming people and destroying the environment.

“Revolutionize” lol. Every time I hear that argument for nfts I cringe. A lot of people into it completely lack morals, but they pretend it’s for the good of the common folk to be able to make money. It’s for the rich in the end, anyone can see that lol

Ok, so this whole thing boils my blood lol. When I heard first of NFTs, it was from a fellow artist who liked that (seemingly) there was a way to sell digital art like traditional analogue art pieces, with authentification and everything, and it wouldn’t matter if you’re already famous, “everyone has a shot”. I looked into it and initially totally understood the appeal. But I could also not really see the difference between NFTs and just drawing a commission that the commissioner then owned, but whatever. Also the environmental impact is huge compared to the lack of actual benefit? But now, the face of NFTs, the thing people think about when you say NFT, is these butt fugly apes, or other similar randomized picrew icon pictures. So much for ‘an actual chance for unkown artists to get rich’, these already rich ass people flaunt their crypto speculation purchases like it’s a personality and I hate it.

if anyone’s interested in learning more about just how bad nfts are, i’d recommend the youtube video ‘line goes up - the problem with nfts’ by folding ideas. it’s long but definitely worth the watch if you get the time considering the amount of research he did into the subject and how well he manages to explain extremely convoluted and complex subjects

@@alexisbarrington4443 it has to do with the amount of energy and carbon used to create the nft, which is really high. basically, the best way i can describe it is that it's an extremely energy-inefficient receipt printer.

I'm pretty sure it's getting the fact that crypto causes a ton of environment damage so they bring that over to nfts I'm pretty positive these literal jpgs don't take more energy than gaming for 10 minutes on ur pc.
