"Demons to some, angels to others." - Pinhead Personally, I think of it as a form of existential seduction that probably compels the unconscious self to pursue solving the box depending on your deep hedonistic vices so to speak. We are motivated a lot of times by our unconscious priming and we consciously sort of rationalize our actions after the fact. Remember that the central god like figure over that domain is the Leviathan which is the god of flesh, hunger, and desire as mentioned in the video so these aspects of humanity are in some way metaphysically accessible to said entity. So people who are susceptible are coerced or manipulated into uncovering the potential nature of the box. So even a good person who is susceptible by an unconscious vice--one that they may repress or even honestly unaware of--could be captivated by the box. As you probably noticed some people who open the box almost seem to be in a hypnotic state; similar to losing yourself in an experience, sensation, activity or mode of being. I also don't think that the characters necessarily have access to the same knowledge that we as an audience do. Whatever limited knowledge they do have probably isn't the full scope of clarity we have. So this idea that if you solve this puzzlebox and you are deemed worthy, you will have access to a plane of existence and become an "Explorers in the further regions of experience" as quoted by Pinhead is something that some probably view as a form of transcendence. Remember, some of the cenobites were humans at one point and while for most people they are probably seen as grotesque (demons to some) they represent something that extends beyond normal human grasps of beauty/pleasure (angles to others). There are likely even more mundane and just plain human reasons to pursue the box. Life circumstances have made the person miserable, unfulfilled or feeling trapped and just as drugs sometimes become an escape for some people, this is probably the spiritual equivalent for them. Honestly, I'm probably imposing a lot of my personal creative horror ideas into it so I could be completely off in terms of the actual cannon, but that's how I make sense of it when I try to think how I would rationalize entities like this and their relation to humans. Maybe I'll make a video of my thoughts on this sometime.

That's because she just solved the puzzle . You put one in front of her she had a compulsion to solve . It without thinking remember what Pinhead said . She was just the hands something like that. As they looked around because the doctor . Had the desire so in order for them to take you . One has to have a desire to open the box . Three cases prove this in the first move . Both Frank and Christy could have left the puzzle box alone . But something called to them makeing them open it . The 3rd the detective in Hellraiser Inferno. He loved an took pleasure in solving puzzles . So they called the cenobites by wanting to open the puzzle box . So by the rules the cenobites have to take them. Or try to take them to hell . But the little girl in the 2nd movie. Had something that made her solve any puzzle in front of her against her will. So by the rules she was of limits to the cenobites . They only can take those that solve the puzzle box by their own free will. So it was not compassion that had Pinhead spare her . He an the other cenobites whore bound by the rules .

@@83shadow3 I always figured it was just because she didn’t have the desire. I figured that it was like if some random guy solved it out of boredom accidentally but did not have the desire to access the supposed pleasures of the box. Would that person be taken? Doesn’t seem fair.
@83shadow34 жыл бұрын
The Lament configuration puzzle box is. A tricky thing but remember the rules . Desire calls them not the hands . In this case Tiffany was in the mental hospital . Because that's all she did all day was solve puzzles. So it was a compulsion she literally could not help . Her self she had to solve it so no desire to open it . The Hellraiser comics go into it a little more. In one case a child see the puzzle box . She says something like o pretty what is it . She plays around with it opens it . The Hell Priest an cenobites come . The Hell Priest tells her even if he wanted to take her . He can't because there are rules an she is innocent . Then the female cenobite starts talking to the girl . Sees she has been abused and tortured . At the end her abusive uncle will never hurt her again. Then in a nother case there is a autistic boy . Like really autistic you know can't talk , focus, communicate in any way an so on. Has fits of uncontrollable rage . But the only thing he likes to do that calms him . Down is solving puzzles so his dad would buy him every kid he could find. Then one day normal puzzles stopped working . So the dad was asking for help online then . Next thing he knew was he got a puzzle in the mail. So he gave it to his son with out knowing it was the Lament configuration puzzle box. But his son finally calmed down an started trying to solve it. Then one day the dad heard a scream . His son was gone the son got enjoyment from solving puzzles . So The Hell Priest took the son an he was converted . So when the Hell Priest got done ripping someone apart . He got a new puzzle put together. But Tiffany did not desire to get pleasure from solving the Lament configuration puzzle box. That's the difference an she was innocent and pure .

But in universe, after Leviathan cleaned house in 2 and witnessed how unhinged a totally evil Pinhead was in 3 without his humanity, Leviathan liked it and changed the rules for future Cenobites? They are still explorers of pleasure and pain, but they mostly prefer pain now. As for the box, I’m guessing the rules of the box changed with them. Now, anyone, regardless of desire gets a visit. “Masters of Pain” does sound like some BDSM nickname but truly I must be a sadomasochist myself... since I made myself watch Hellraiser movies when I was way too young. Back in the Blockbuster Video days 😬 Great video.

Wow, I didn’t expect to find the model of the “Berserk” manga, consider to be the most well written and gruesome original manga of all time. So this is what gave birth to it. The God Hand in Berserk were basically model after the cenobites. The behelit use to summon the demon and God hand are Lament configuration. The first time we meet the Godhand in the manga, they are in the Labyrinth that look almost exactly like in the movie. So they is no denying it. This is very cool!

I’ve always been fascinated with Clive barkers comics and films. The movies score are amazing and the design is very artistic and flamboyant . I remember going over to a friends house when I was a kid and was in awe with his Clive barker comic collection.

Fascinating, the similarities between Hellraiser's Cenobites and the members of The Godhand from Kentaro Miura's manga "Berzerk'. Off hand, I don't know if either creator was influenced or even aware of each other, and if that were so, it just makes it eerie all the more that their imaginations converged upon common mythologies.

Your videos, perspective and presentation of the cinema subjects is always a delight to listen to. You cover it in such a pre-SCP way that it stands out. With that said... and you did ask.. would you mind tackling the creatures from Fraggle Rock? In particular the ogres, and the whole fantastic landscape on the other side of a cave system that connected to an old man's workshop.

Oh and a similar character like pinhead and fornicus is also portrayed in “Thirteen Ghosts” of the 90s. Underrated horror depicting a horror hierarchical metaverse akin to the rigidity of Islam present only still today in Koranic subrogation which mainly prohibited any and all personal contextual interpretation of Mohammad’s book the Quran, and after the Hadith when peaceful most of the time Moham turns into a pedophile warlord who marries his brothers wife (she’s 12 or 13 against her will obviously ) is the most perfect being to ever exist EVER.. only because everyone who said he didn’t, well they are dead dead so yeah if something contradicts between the 2 books of Islam you default the resolution in the blood soaked Hadith being supreme arbiter to prophet shitheads sadist shitty attempt on meta narrative.

Im soo thankful you took the time to make this +1 sub. I've gone by the moniker of The Cenabite for my whole life Almost 30 years now, As a Dj, Producer Emcee for underground Music SUch as Dark Drum and Bass and industrial ie {skinny puppy ect} when your young and trying to Name yourself with a name that is almost more important than your "government name" due to having some time to figure out who you are, and what can best describe you, your feelings as a human and what your feelings are on the human race in general, It was VERY difficult to come up with something, DEEPER than a tattoo that would be basically capable of explain who I am or what my outlook on the life i've known, in a single word. And Clive barker gave that to me, with the Cenobites tragic, yet almost comical by origins by the 3rd movie. in which the DJ spinning cds, A thing that at the time could only be done on PCDJ an app that as made by the company I worked for, for many years, later n life. Ny 2020 Many people and groups have used the name with the proper spelling, some whom I was even in contact with prior to them using the name. HOWEVER, why would this bother me, as stated in origins, I AM PAIN. And Very Glad that this explained what was and still can be hard to explain to some people why people call me Cena and why I feel No kinship to the name of saint Anthony, But every Cenobite represents forces of nature, love to some the opposite to others, When i Die the headstone or urn w.e. will say cenabite, Not because I dislike my family, But due to the fact that I have not only embraced this name threw good bad and between always people with their cinabite jokes.. worst part is this, as if i haven't heard it 1 million times b4, but hey i am not complaining, much. lol ok its gotten old a lil... :) , o well haha again my deepest thanks to you, Clive, the cast all involved with the films and sagas especially those who wrote the lore. I Cant express my thanks enough, and a small pat on my own back, im horrible, for making this life long choice and is probably my least regretted thing in all of life, it was a Elegant and Perfect, choice. thanks to the writers, But Me at an age where your future can be very uncertain. This was without a doubt from the moment the thought began, And I knew I DID NOT wish to be known as dj or mc SO AND SO

I wish they didn't dilute the Cenobites into your average "evil just to be evil" demons, their neutrality is a huge factor into why I love them as characters. They are a consequence, you do this to yourself. They are just the middlemen of your actions.
@DubeIncorperated5 ай бұрын
Agreed! I always saw their sudden change to be Leviathans doing. I know they became more slasher because that was what was popular at the time. But those who still desire it, still seek them out.
