I was chainsawing some pallets to burn today and thought about your videos 😄 Have you considered putting in a solar panel to charge your batteries? I just installed a cheap 100w solar panel kit on my shed and it keeps 2 car batteries charged enough to charge my drill batteries and run some DC motion sensor flood lights. May be enough to keep your tool batteries and electronic equipment charged.

I've considered it but with solid tree cover (and Michigan weather,) they wouldn't get much sun. Also, just about everything nice is out of my budget if I want to keep living out here going forward. But several people have asked if I had a Patreon account so I finally set one up. If anything comes in from that, I might just have to give a panel a try anyway.

Thanks Raymond! That is in fact my belief. I mean, if I was trying to build an Iphone from scratch, there is a pretty solid chance that it simply wouldn't work when it was done. But a deck? Or a deer blind? How could anyone attempt these things and not end up with something that would serve the purpose? 'Course, its a lot easier to try these things when nobody is looking over your shoulder telling you that you aren't doing it the "right way."

Another outstanding video. The sky-deck is incredible. This is coming from someone who’s mask fogged up his glasses and fell down a set of concrete steps and broke his kneecap. I would have fallen multiple times during this construction but I would have loved every minute of it. The stars do look great. I just figured out that the deck reminds me of a tree house plan in popular mechanics when I was a kid. They only used three trees so more of a triangular deck. I know I put the idea of spiral stairs (and I would love that) but really looking forward to what comes next. I also want to see if mosquitos don’t fly that high. Thank you for sharing and Provolone does rock in the cheese world.

Broken knee cap sounds horrible! When I go to the doctor and they ask my pain from one to ten, I think of ten as the time I ran my knee cap on the blade of a snow cat. The pain was so bad, it took me to the ground and sucked the breath out of me. Finally had surgery on it the year before coming out here (and it is still the reason that you will never see me running in a video.) Man, I hope you recovered alright!

@@survivingringworm2202 I am in the middle of recovery. The worst and best thing about it is that I retired at the end of 2021. Now I don’t have to miss any work but I have all this free time with not being able to do much but watch lots of GREAT KZbin content. I still think the spiral staircase is a great idea but you have got enough trees there that you can build multiple mini platforms and work your way up to the sky deck with a few stairs between each platform. Maybe a swinging bridge or two. Thank you for the follow up.

It is definitely going to need a fun way to get up eventually. Making a log ladder right now just for immediate access that isn’t that shakey aluminum extension type. My bro wouldn’t even go up it the other day. And it’s HIS ladder!. But I’ve also decided to build a slide to get down instead of the fireman’s pole. So many options. Hope you heal up alright! I’ve been through a lot of surgeries in recent years- non of them fun- but it made getting out and doing stuff all the more enjoyable when i was eventually able to do it.

👏👏 Super cool platform! Good job! Too bad you forgot the good sleeping bag (I might need a transparent tent too 🙂). Seeing this, I wish I had the strength and means to do the same...I'd love that!... only maybe in a slightly less freezing region than yours, like, maybe in central Portugal, where land is dirt cheap at the moment and the temps are minimum -7 C. The only problem there is the extreme heat in the Summer and the danger of fires but if you've got some reserves and create a good prevention system when you move "in" , it's almost perfect.... There are lots of creeks, river beaches, wells, ponds and lakes to refresh in though, if you don't depend only on muscle force to do the summer harvest for you, so you actually get to have some leisure time...

Have you looked into a rain roof to collect drinking water for the warm months? A nice large dry storage area under it would make a perfect place for storing the misc wood you cut along with space for larger items to avoid needing to tarp them. Some IBC totes with the tanks painted to reduce algae growth inside should let you get all the water you need for drinking, cooking, bathing and cleaning without needing to look at the swamp water till the temp is freezing and you want to drain the system for over winter protection.

A good place to work in the rain is below or you could make another floor midway up and have room below and a milling area below. You could also use the extra 3 feet of wood for steps. If you did have spiral stair case, it could go around one tree and open on the outside of the floor you built. Just plan for both floors landings and exits if you do. A straight staircase would make bring up lumber easier or you could have a pulley or two on a tree out to the side, above your floor level. You could also have a roof skirting around your floor for more room below.

What great fun, as someone who does this (variation on a theme) for a living, it is quite enjoyable. My only wish is that you would use a sealer on all the end grain to help longevity- I know you say you don't care if it lasts, but gosh darn it, everyone else does. Thanks!

I totally hear ya. I actually wouldn't mind weather proofing the whole deck since the wood is so pretty but just don't have the $ to pay for "unnecessary" stuff like that. Not that anything I make is necessary.

My knees were knocking when you butted the flooring ! Reminds me when I built big shed, I first slapped together a mezzanine floor about half way up to the top, so I had a platform to stand on to complete the roof, shed with 6x20 foot poles, you’re balance and skill is amazing ⛩ courageous as🔭 bring the telescope as well 😷 don’t forget to vaccinate all your household, stay alert 😜

Sweet! Would love to have some cherry to play with. Cedar is great for building structures in the out of doors but isn’t much for whittlin’.

What if you left the trees longer so that they would also serve as corners for your walls? You could have cut notches where the floor connects to the trees and still have corner supports up

One of my favorite vids so far! I have all the same Ryobi tools down to the old circular saw... Cool to see them being used for this fun project!

Can't really beat Ryobi, right? Everything has nay-sayers these days, but even those old blue tools have never let me down. I've probably got over 20 of their tools- some almost 20 years old- and not one has ever stopped working.

If you're not gonna put on a railing, perhaps extending the floor to create a 3' perimeter of large opening lattice. People won't walk on the lattice but it will catch people who accidentally step off the solid floor.

Ryan - you are just TOO AWESOME for your YT!! Love this video even tho, as you began putting the floor down, it made me rather dizzy and nauseous LOL. You do such kewl work. I'd love to come out and spend time in this land of "Bizzare Buildings " Surviving Ringworms B & B... love it!! (would love to see you daily... even if it's just a 15 min. clip letting us know what is coming up for the long vid.) Be safe - looking forward to the next video!!!!

To be fair, in real life it makes a guy dizzy too! Especially at first when there are only loose planks to stand on. I probably looked like I was walking barefoot over Legos for the first hour or so. Ringworm B&B... Maybe a franchise?

For sure! I do hope to get to building a sauna sometime this year. Even a propane one so I'd actually use it regularly. Just have to build a tool room, outdoor kitchen, real shower roof and a roof over my tent deck first.
