Exactly how it also feels trying to recommend someone a book or comic and their first response is "that sounds like it could be a really good movie!" when you want them to just enjoy the story in the format it was told in.

But then it is a question if they like the whole product that is the short. Or if they are invested in the core idea of it. The first can't really be translated into another medium but the second makes a lot possible

I am from Asia. We have a culture of not taking home things we found on the streets. So if we see a bag someone left on the street, we leave it there. A mirror, we leave it there. I think what really hit me, is that in the bedroom-at-night scene, when Julie starts screaming, it's a comfort. It's the most calm I felt during this short because, by screaming, she is telling us that Reese is right. There *is* something wrong, he isn't delusional, there is an Entity out to get them and they can face it together. That's why when she smiles, it hurts. My heart dropped into my stomach. We question everything. Is Reese halucinating? Is Julie in on it? Is she the Entity? We don't know, and that's more terrifying than the Old Man in the Chair.

The scariest part to me is that after the constant switching between reality and hallucination in the breakfast scene, you have no idea what’s real or not. Maybe he’s still in bed, and the entire thing from that point on was fake. Or maybe there were no hallucinations at all and the police were real. Maybe the hallucinations started before the chair. Maybe his girlfriend isn’t even real. Maybe he was in a mental hospital and recently escaped, and now has this entire fake life that he’s imagining, when in reality he’s in some old abandoned house, like the government building in A Beautiful Mind. Once the character has lost touch with reality, the ending becomes entirely open-ended, like the ending of Inspection when you don’t know if he’s still in a dream or not. I think that uncertainty works amazingly well in a mysterious horror short like this.

I'm trying to figure out why it sent chills through me and the best thing I can think of is that in that situation when she's screaming it's a validation of your horror, and there's a strange comfort in that. It means that whatever happens, you're not alone. Her suddenly smiling flips that completely around. You thought you had someone on your side, witnessing the horror with you, but really they're part of the horror too... And they're in bed next to you.

What makes the horror work is that there is literally nothing in the story to fall back on and give us comfort... not the main character's memories or sense of self and of what is (or isn't) reality, not the girlfriend to help him through whatever is happening, nor the comfort of being in his own home, and not even the police! We can't even have the luxury of thinking we know what is about to happen next, and that is what makes this scary!

As an actual schizophrenic who has these blips of time, weeks, days, hours, minutes that pass by and living entire experiences of terror and horror, having to explain them. This is accurate and terrifying at such a whole level. I lived a month in a canal bouthouse basement trapped by a masochist demon and it was mere hours and one evening in reality. My experience was reality, others perception of it wasn't. When your closest friends and family are gaslighting you in your hallucinations and you're BEGGING them to stop lying and there's all this happening and your view of reality is so warped that you can't even comprehend it is just so scary because you can't trust your own perception of reality. I don't think this is alzheimers, I think this is schizophrenia, when you can't sleep for 4 days and the tentacles come out of the doors, your dog can't comfort you because you're flashing images of it eating your face and your friend's can't be trusted because when they talk to you their words are lies. This, is the reality of TRUE mental breakdowns.

Yeah, a very well balanced mix! The suspense was always Justified.. Justified n KILLING! The jump-scares timed just right, the plot twists kept simple yet brilliant.. both throughout & the final Revelation where it concluded/ended! All in 25 minutes & a low budget. THAT'S what u get from talented/ creative writing! All too often, movies (The Nun) are just dragged out by abusing suspense.. WITHOUT that suspense being justified, overuse jump-scares.. ad nausea, plot twists get ridiculously over complicated & full of holes.. then conclude HOURS dragged out.. w/ a disappointing ending. Curry Barker delivered SO much.. w/ such LITTLE.. via creative talent & passion. 'The Chair' puts so many over-hyped (& high budget) 'blockbusters' to shame. X

This film has stuck with me for a while. I've been thinking about it a lot, and i think i know what's going on (for the most part) THEORY: We know that Reese is suffering from alzheimer so this theory is mainly focused on explaining what actually happens in reality in the film. So, to begin, we have to understand one thing, and that is that the entire story is being shown to us through the perspective of Reeses' dying mind, and i think you'll understand how and why once i explain everything So the movie starts off with Reese picking up the chair from the side of the road while an old man is looking at him, the same old man that will later stalk his alzheimers infested mind, on a rewatch i do belive that this man is likely Reese dead grandfather as he mention that the chair reminds him of him "it reminds me of my grandpa too" ( quote from 3:31 ) i belive this is how the film starts because as Reese is dying from his alzheimers this is the earliest memory he can manage to remember, I think that the reason Reese is so fixated on the chair, why he keeps recalling it and why it turns people who sit on it mad (atleast from Reese perspectiv) is likely because of some sort of trauma related to Reeses grandfather that he simply cannot recall because he cant remember anything that far back so he is projecting all that negativity on the first thing he can recall, the chair, in his mind everything (or a majority of what happend) is because of the chair, whenever someone sits on it they act strange mainly they get very violent (I looked a bit into it and it seems that things like alzheimers can occur more frequently in people who have had to deal with trauma early in life so i belive that the main reason this is happening is because of something truamatic that happend early in Reeses life likely related to his grandfather) so with that in mind lets move on, I think the next thing we should talk about is the bed scene, specifically, when Julie wakes up, sees the old man, scremas in terror for a few seconds and then just goes blank face and falls asleep, I belive most of this memory is fake besides one part and that is Julie screaming, I think what really happend here is that Reese found out about Julie cheating on him with their Neighbor who he would also eventually kill and decided to confront her and ended up killing her that night, I realize thats a lot to take in but it'll make sens in a while, so why do I say that Julie cheated on Reese? Well, remember the scene when the officers entered the house and Julie was in the bath "masturbating" well what i think actually happened is that Reese is fusing memories here, i think one day Reese came home early and cought the two of them in the act at whice point a fight broke out and during that Julie screamed "I fucking hate you" ( quote from 18:12 ) after what happend both of them were probably ready to breake up but i think thats likely around when Reeses alzheimers kicked in and he ended up forgetting what happend or atleast for the most part, as his dying brain would remeber what he heared that day i think this is reinforced by first off when Julie mentions to Reese how he talked about beating their neighbour until his eyes pop out ( quote at 10:05 ) and when Reese asks Julie "am i sick" ( quote at 15:43 ) also something intresting to keep in mind is that after the night when Julie wakes up freaked out and then goes back to sleep she never acts the way she did before as a matter of fact after that night she never acts normal again whice, to me suggests that she is dead and Reeses broken mind is trying to reacreate her from old memories all fused together whice is why after that night she keps acting so strangely and why she seemingly changes moods so fast going from happy and positive to states of mania in mere seconds Now let's talk about the cops, it seems pretty obvious that Reese killed them but how? Well for the first one, the one that sits in the chair, I belive that we are actually shown exactly how and where Reese killed him and i belive that is when the cop starts acting strangly, more specifically, when he hits his head on the shelf then shoots himself, again i think because of his alzheimers Reese couldn't remember correctly what happend so instead of remembering that he was the one who killed the cop he thinks he killed himself because of the chair, and as for the other cop Reese kills him with a hammer that one is pretty obvious TLDR: Reese's girlfriend cheats on him with Fence (the neighbour) he forgets about it because of his alzheimers, later tho he manages to figure out what happend and proceeds to kill both Julie and Fence, then the cops come knocking, he kills them both aswell and proceeds to die of alzheimer Its not perfect and im sure there's holes to be poked in my theory but i wanted to put it out there and encourege more people to theorize about this masterpiece and put their ideas out there

I think Reese killed his grandfather as well and proceeded to kill himself after killing the second officer. It also could be that Reese went to claim some items from the grandfather’s house after his death. It is likely that Reese forgot this murder took place, which is why at the start of the film he is picking up a random chair from the street to him while his grandfather (or a form of his forgotten guilty conscious) just starring at him. I also like a line from Reese’s girlfriend where she says “Youre the negative energy Reese”. Love the theory

Julie tells him he's been acting different. He's been talking about killing someone, speaking nonsense, getting into fights, being an asshole. This is quite literally a symptom and how many forms of Alzheimers usually begin. People suddenly turn into "someone else", they show personality traits that they didn't show before, they begin to get confused, which in turn leads them to become aggressive because they feel like people are fucking with them. They are absolutely certain the way they perceive things is correct and don't want to hear their loved ones correcting them because then it feels like something is wrong with them and most of the time they don't understand that there is, in fact, something wrong. (Obviously, this is shown a little exaggerated in this Short Film) Apart from the fact that Reese is already losing like, entire days--even a week--,which clearly points to his illness being a lot more advanced than normal for someone his age, especially considering it sure seems like this has never happened to him before. (His "young" self, as he's shown in the scenes.) Julie being young just shows that actual Reese doesn't remember Julie being any older than this. Julie, like she's shown in the Short Film, is the only memory he has left of her. He doesn't remember her aging. He doesn't remember her passing away. He doesn't even remember that he himself is an old man. Which I think all just points to the theory that Reese never actually killed any of them. He simply doesn't remember them passing away and therefore believes he must've been the one to kill them since he cannot fathom that he's an old man and Julie probably passed from old age years ago--since he doesn't even remember her being any older than this. People with Alzheimers usually remember things from a long time ago pretty well. At work, we often have people with Alzheimers that are delirious and you will not believe how many times they will say they "have to go to work" even though they've been pensioned 20 years ago. They will talk about vacations they've had 40 years ago or their childhood dog well enough, but if you ask them what date it is, where they are or what they had to eat last week, they won't be able to give you an answer. Or at least not a factually correct one. Reese is literally just sick. But this was such an incredible way of portraying this. Thanks for coming to my Ted talk, that's all I have to say LMAO

Like The Ring had insane moments like this but there was more of a grounding in reality that you could reflect on to understand how terrifying some moments were. They managed to put together a story and use a chair as the main plot point to string the viewers along. The chair acted as almost an anchor point in the realm of chaos that happened. While watching i felt like the only scenes i could truly trust were real were the ones of the old man. I kinda wish more horror could dip their toes into this direction, but it would be difficult to keep something this chaotic feel constantly on theme for a full length movie, but this did great

@@optimusprime5448 Yeah, and I appreciate that it hasn't been done before (not in the zeitgeist if it has been) but I think that the ungrounding of it needs to at least be told to you that this is the point. Stay with me for a second--I know--that "ruins it" but I beg to differ. Because I was looking for the grounding the whole time. If there is no 'base reality' and I'm aware by way of narrative suggestion when the crazy shit starts, I'd stop looking for it. The obvious counter point--that's part of the experience. I get that. I thought it was a detriment more than a quality I liked. With all that said, Curry is original AF and I'd love to see how else he defies genres.

@@NickMak-m2c you're not wrong but in this specific case,that would sort of nullify the effect. I believe this short is all about Alzheimer's and how someone suffering from it feels and perceived the world. Obviously it's a little exaggerated but that's to put emphasis on the feelings. Specifically, the confusion. An Alzheimer's patient struggles to perceive reality, and making the horror here more grounded in reality might indeed add effect but it weakens the analogy by reducing the sheer mind boggling chaos of it all. For example, some things I understand from this video is that Reese is actually an old man and all this is happening in his head. Because he suffers from Alzheimer's he forgets a lot of things but remembers a chair and his girlfriend when she was young. However he's confused about other details like what happened in the week after they brought the chair and how his girlfriend reacted in certain situations and what she reacted to. Hence her weird body language. Another commenter explained that he thinks he murdered all those people because he can't remember them aging but is aware of their death, so he assumes he did it, not they died of old age. Holy crap why did I write that much

Interesting... for me, that's the least impressive line. Where did it come from? Who just says, "You're a man dying from Alzheimer's and you don't even know it"? Sure, it's in his head so it doesn't have to make sense, but why would his head try to tell him in that way? (note that I'm just an amateur writer having fun with the idea) It seems like the point of the line is to give the audience the context they need to have a reasonably coherent first-watch, but I think she could've done that in a way that was less direct and more believable (e.g. "I'm your fucking granddaughter why do you treat me like this?"). This would also capitalize on one of the interesting sources of anxiety I see in the film: the fact that we don't know what's happening in his real world or what he's doing to himself or the real people around him. Same with the part about brain-chemicals in the ending. Why would the last thing he remembers be some trivia about brains and dying? If I had been the director (which I'm not) they'd be singing an uncanny acapella of a cringe break-up song. The way I see it, he blames the break-up for the murder, and that period of his life was so traumatic that it's the last thing he remembers, which is why the dead flowers (together forever) are in the chair in the middle of everything. So a break-up song that he listened to constantly when she was leaving him would fit the overall story more. It's also more realistic to what we know about Alzheimer's, sense music related memories tend to be the last to go. Anyways, it's interesting to see that we experience it differently! Edit: I do like many parts of the film, though. Especially the first few scenes and the way he depicted the mind of this guy who did a few murders after getting dumped.

@@isaachiggs1925m interesting so your interpretation is all those bodies/people in the room in the final scene are supposed to be people who he murdered? And he’s remembering some scenes from his life that triggered him becoming a serial killer. He used to be a normal guy with a job and a gf but his rampage was triggered by a breakup after a fight with her about a chair he found. Then he went crazy for a week, said some racist shit, got fired, and killed a bunch of people? And the reveal is that in reality he’s an old man dying of Alzheimer’s but keeps forgetting he has it. I thought the filmmakers were implying only that he killed the coworker whose death the cops had come to his house to investigate, the “bad cop” who “shoots himself”, and either the “good cop” or his (ex?)gf, but with a hammer or whatever blunt object he dropped at the end. I hadn’t considered this period of time in his life was just the first in a long line of murders, and the short film is actually about his evolution from sad dumped boyfriend to serial killer dying of Alzheimer’s.

Ok, so first off what a wonderful short film. So horrifying in an unconventional way. I have a few working theories for the meaning. I don't see a lot of analysis on this film so I'm going to share my thoughts on this work of art. SPOILERS AHEAD. The chair in the beginning on the grass, Reese picks it up, drawn to it for some reason. He doesn't even seem to notice the old man in the background. He says once it's home that it reminds him of his grandpa. Clearly he was close with his grandfather. Later when the old man Franklin started to bash in his head he said to Reese don't forget about me. This film seems to be an homage to alzheimer's and the severe confusion it causes. It wreaks havoc like an unstoppable force, affecting everything and everyone in your life. Julie going from happy to sad to confused. The flowers once alive and the next thing Reese knew, they were dead and he had no memory of it. He couldn't remember to pick up dinner when she said she asked. He couldn't remember the date, or the fact that he was fired. He didn't know if he was crazy or if everyone else was. These are some common symptoms of alzheimer's. Either he's experiencing alzheimer's or his grandfather and others in his life who were important to him were experiencing it and it was taking on toll on him. However you slice it, I think this draws an imporant conclusion to alzheimer's: it's debilitating to anyone it affects, whether it's direct or experienced secondhand. I could be way off on this, but it seems to be the theme in this short film. Also, I'm a fan of the various camera tricks used throughout. For instance, when he first comes home with the flowers, no faces were shown until you see Julie's reflection in the side mirror and then the camera pans directly to Reese for the first time in the film. It also doesn't show the detective and his partner's face right away, just the shoes. I'm wondering if this is another clever way of showcasing the confusion alzheimer's creates and the sense of lost identity. This could all be obvious, but either way, this added a horror element to something that felt like real life, the casual conversations leading up to the climax, the arguing, casually sleeping next to one another, etc. And that is the truly horrifying part, in my opinion. Very well done short film. This could easily be made into a full movie. The story line is there and it hooks you as soon as you see the chair in the opening scene. If anyone has anything to add, I would love to discuss it further. :) I know there's probably so much more symbolism that I'm missing.

Well i have to….have to say the following. Where he placed the chair. Next to a doorway. Behind the chair is a checkboard. Usually its black and white.male female our yin and yang. Each square represents a moment in life every thought either positive or negative. Here though we see a multicolored board with many shapes. Note youll see moons(mercury) Also eyes (which are the awarness principle. And of all things…..a vortex. Spiral. The board is duality.life.grid .leylines.the quantuum grid.whch is blue or red .when your able to see it. But here its like a stylized kaleidoscope. In simpler words the board is a both a place and a gateway. Note: We dont see them they havent entered yet.she walks to him they are both in the opening …but she walks away.and we see her on the mirror or the other side of the doorway.its as if they are now both far away yet very close That!!!!! Is mercurial logic. Shes talking to him as if he decided hes going to take the ride.she doesnt like the feeling.im not going in with you. We see him when he sits . Hes now entered into the vortex. Look at the screen in with her in the mirror amd his upper body out of view? Like he lost his head and she is a distant reflection.very much ….disassociation. Take a screen shot of that tapestry Part . And youll see at bottom some art work . Hard to tell what it is But a see a whale and Some strange creepy big eyed horned goatish being. The devil. In deep occultism The devil is mercury on a very bad day. And you can look up the levis baphomet image and see thevmercury symbol he placed there . In the matrix they also show the checker board gateway Its in countless films . Just pay attention when it pops up And watch what happens. *****Spoilers ahead***** Two defining and spine chilling scenes of this short film. When the lady screams and smiles and goes back to bed. Another one where she says "he comes with the chair" and the old guy comes and kisses her on the cheek. It literally gave me goosebumps. Thank you so much. I can't tell you how relieving it is to see someone else who acknowledges the short film for what it is and how having them full length dilutes it in some fashion. There are seemingly armies of people calling for "full length" features on so many of these short films and the idea of that is appalling to me. It would ruin so many of them. Really annoys me how many people do this. Take this one for example. Go through the comments you'll see tons of people calling for movie length features of it completely disregarding how well it works for what it is a short horror film.

What makes this movie special is that the cop is also reacting to everything that happens. It makes it even more creepy.
@FadeRadio1
@FadeRadio1 3 ай бұрын
Right? Like the fact that the younger cop at times seems like he's genuinely unsettled by his partners actions and implications trying to get him to calm down and step outside gives you the sense that some of the creepy things about torture and pulling his gun out AREN'T just things the protagonist is imagining. Makes sense, as apparently sitting in the chair gives you murderous intent and psychopathic tendencies. Also worth noting that the girlfriend sat in the chair in the scene where she brings it back home, so it's possible that some of the psycho scenes of her aren't fully imagined either. The creepiest part of this film is that blend of what's clearly un-real hallucinations, and creepy terrifying things that are actually happening. It feels simultaneously impossible to tell what is actually real at any point, but also gives enough consistent elements that persist for us to assume things that are actually happening or have already happened.

I love how many mundane horrors are mixed with the existential dread. Your girlfriend being angry at you, being accused of racism, having alzheimers, getting a visit from the cops, and Reese not even knowing whats going on in between. It feels too real yet not real enough.
@Julia-lk8jn
@Julia-lk8jn 5 ай бұрын
You're right, it starts out with those mundane fears like getting into a fight with your girlfriend, to being sick, and then to the crazy stuff like having a dead body in your place and the cops knocking at the door. The worst of it is that nothing is reliable, and the concept of reality gets more and more dissolved.

This plays a lot like my worst psychotic episode. Constantly resetting time, horrible hallucinations, my Ex being her regular gaslighting abusive cheating self, and me waking up at the end, having significantly hurt people. Somehow i believe that emotionak abuse by a romantic partner can worsen or make you especially vulnerable to paranoid psychosis. Because of the time resetting, and me spending weeks in there (it was actually just 6 hours) i thought I was in Purgatory, or some sort of quantum immortality, living the last moments of my life over and over again, being unable to pass into nothing, like I desperately wanted to. I pity and wish strength to those suffering from schizophrenia, whos entire lives go like this. With alzheimers, probably the most horrible disease to suffer from.

My theory is that Reece is actually experiencing amnesia, and that the sudden moments of horror expressed by each person he encounters are moments of terror as he killed them. His wife said he was talking about smashing his friends head in with a brick, and later we see the old man smashing his head with a brick. My theory is that when the wife was in bed screaming and suddenly stopped it was because he killed her. They next day she seemed to forget about it and was jovial (and that’s when we see her acknowledge the old man before he smashes his head in. She was dead at this point). Although this theory doesn’t really stick because when one of the detectives sits in the chair he acts weird too. Hmm. It also looks like the wife had slit wrists at the end so I’m really not sure what to make of this! Fantastic film.

Not being able to trust yourself or even those close to you is what really made this super uncomfortable. At some point you really think you're going insane and not even admitting it helps, you're still trapped.

Heck. This was the most relentlessly terrifying short I've ever seen. This is an absolute top tier evocation of insanity. It starts so subtly with his weird compulsion to pick up the chair, and every twist makes you wonder how it could possibly top it, and yet it DOES. Julie seeming sane, just stressed out and uncompromising, until the old man scare when the flip-flopping starts--and at first you think it was a one-off, until she says "Dead Man Fred" and it only gets FASTER. And it somehow gets MORE confusing when the cops show up--if they were just switching back and forth like Julie, we would have been prepared, but (after Reese doesn't even seem surprised by the corpse in the laundry room, as if he would remember killing the guy, even though we KNOW he doesn't remember anything like that) the younger cop DOESN'T flip-flop. He's almost as confused and scared by his partner's behavior as we are, which makes you wonder if it's NOT all in Reese's head. There are just so many moments that make these sudden, incredibly clever turns, that really elevate this whole film.

@@k_chirsoo1729 It's hard to say, mostly on purpose. The MC is clearly suffering from massive hallucinations, and significant memory loss, and possibly many other mental symptoms; whether they already existed, or were started by the chair, are unclear. His senses and memories are so compromised, we can never really tell whether the people around him are saying or doing what he sees and hears them doing, or even if they are really there. You are supposed to be confused, as much as you are terrified. This is not supposed to tell a coherent story, it is supposed to show you what it feels like to lose your mind.

Not necessarily crazy. Each human culture has evolved via different paths. Americans swear to UFO sightings, and I've firsthand seen a person (not sure if it was dead or something not of this plane of existence) talk to me in Thailand and the person next to me didn't see it happen. I was not on any kind of narcotics. It's very likely people of different cultures have evolved to attach themselves to existence itself in ways scientists haven't yet discovered, which would explain a lot of the paranormal we see.
