The Chakma Tribe in Tripura

Chakmas are one of the major tribes of Tripura . According to the unofficial figures around 2 Lakh Chakma live in Tripura.Chakmas are known to be a tribe of South-East Asia. They have first migrated to Arakan Hill of Myanmar and then Chittagong Hill tracts of Tripura. A major part of them however migrated to Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh in course of time from their original home land. According to Census Report of 2011 Chakma population in Tripura is 79,813. Their main concentration in Tripura could be located at Belonia, Subroom and Amarpur in South Tripura, Dhalai and North Tripura District at Chamanu, Gandacherra, Kanchanpur, Machmara etc. places.

You’re wrong chakma aren’t only dependent on water. We do cultivation, jhum cultivation, paddy fields . So many of us are dependent on Farming. You can’t conclude your research within one village. We don’t welcome guests with homemade Alcohol it is being practiced only in few villages but not in everywhere. Your channel is globally active how can you portray only one village and come to a conclusion? Watchers will believe on your video. So many fault information you’re giving. In my chakma community we’ve so many in Administration now. So please don’t come to a conclusion without a proper research. Your whole video shows that how lagging our community is you should show both good and bad side.

I seriously dnt believe how can you give a conclusion about chakma community by only visiting one village ...we doesn't mainly based on fishing there are many more things that chakma people's does ...you have visited only one village and youre saying that chakma people's give animal sacrifice for there ancestors .this is totally a wrong information ...now chakma people's have developed so much they dnt believe in sacrificing animals ....i would really suggest you do vist more villages of chakma then come to a proper conclusion ....as many people are watching your channel dnt give a half information or wrong information to other regions of India

Hello Gitanjali, we want to inform you that we try not to give half baked informations in our programme. That’s why we travel to remote corners of the country to met tribal communities. In the case of Chakma also we have spoken to many people from the community. We are not claiming that every family offer chicken or goat to their ancestors. But isn’t it true that people of Chakma tribe follow this tradition (and there is nothing wrong in it). Yes we agree that traditions of every community changes with time. It’s also true that fishing is not the only way of livelihood of Chakmas, but a major source of income. So we try to show the life style of a tribe and try to give a broad information about a particular tribe. Thanks again for the feedback.

Chakma Tribes souldn't have 2L population in Tripura. It has to be 50-60K. If the 2L population which mentioned here is correct, then it is a very serious matter because most of Chakmas are immigrants from Bangladesh.
