This show definitely deserves another chance. I like the very recent (at the time of taping, of course) current event questions.

Note how at 0:32, Don Morrow speaks Dick Clark's name with an echo effect- not only was this not used for any other episodes, but it was also something he used in his previous announcing job- the last season of NBC's Sale of the Century, after Jay Stewart was fired.

Why was Jay fired?
@jwgreek86063 ай бұрын
Because he was loaded on something with chronic back pain so they had Jay phone it in rather than have him do it live

Both taped at Hollywood Center Studios at this time, along with TTD 90 and the Quiz Kids Challenge. Perhaps they shared a soundstage? Also, I think this show got a lot of criticism (critica calling it a knock-off of J!). This was a great show that unfortunately didn't survive the mass tsunami of game shows in 1991 (after hope for reviving the genre the previous fall).

And not to mention that the game was played differently. They should've kept the gameplay the same. Starting with $1000 or $1250 & betting $50, $100, $150 & so on through $500 & having the player who bet the most answer if more than 1 selected the same question.

This show was a nice antidote to Jeopardy! The current events angle forced you to pay attention to the world and not just be a trivia god. And if you remember what Jeopardy! was like back then, it was stern, daunting, and not very entertaining. The Challengers was a lighter show, but still a difficult quiz. It should have been a big hit.
@gameshowfreak200712 жыл бұрын
it's because later in the run they knock the payoffs down to 100/150/200 and 200/300/400 in the main game.

Actually it's a knock-off of "The Who What or Where Game", another Ron Greenberg Production. "The 3 W's" has 1 episode here on KZbin. That show actually followed the original "Jeopardy!" with Art Fleming on NBC....a 1-2 quiz punch.

Little wonder this show ran only one season-THEY WOULDN'T LEAVE IT ALONE!! WHY?!? It seemed like they changed the format or the scoring or SOMETHING about it every two weeks or so. Then they have the gall to wonder why it couldn't find an audience. What a waste.
