One of the first Chameleons songs I ever heard way back in '83. I might still have the single. Been sold on the band ever since.

Great song, so different to the other songs. Next 2 songs are also amazing. Paper Tigers is a catchy tune and View From A Hill is an incredible closer. Their next two albums are also outstanding. Strange Times is their best in my opinion.

Love this album and the Chameleons, I discovered these as a young Goth punk at uni in Manchester along with The Stone Roses in the 80s. Takes me back to the clubs, The International, Slosky's, The Banshee amongst others. Defo try the albums What Does Anything Mean Basically? and Strange Times. Shame I never managed to get to see them live, timing was always off.

Mark Burgess wrote ALL the lyrics (as far as I am aware) to all The Chameleons songs, Mark was the lyricist, bassist and vocalist.

A beautiful song. You are actually right about the lyrical content! I chatted with Mark about the song, and it was based upon a few things (if completely accurate) Mark Burgess was attacked whilst walking along a road, (somewhere in Middleton?) a car pulled up and some thugs jumped out armed with hammers 🔨 and attacked him! so yes, you were right in a way!

The vocals at the end of the song actually sounds like Paul Banks of Interpol! the music was an influence upon Interpol too, and especially Interpol's debut album 'Turn on the bright lights' "How can you laugh this one away?", "Will you ever laugh this one away?" That was great! Best track for me so far in this Chameleons run. I almost skipped it - I liked the other tracks, but this is two cuts above. I like that edginess. Joy Division meets early U2? Anyone see that?

Pretty sure that all these early 80's acts were listening to each other's stuff. Comsat Angels and U2 toured together, Martin Hannett worked with both JD and U2, Lillywhite worked with Chameleons on a 1982 single....lots of cross-pollinization going on.

Home invaders stabbed my 83 year old neighbour when he tried to defend his wife because they were getting too rough with her. He died about a week later. That was the second home invasion they went through. First one, the kitchen door burst open at breakfast time, and then they were taken to the bedroom to point out "where the money was". They didn't have much money. The wife's rings had "become permanent" behind her knuckles. She asked if she could try to work them free with some soap. No. One of the thugs "bit them off". Because he wanted to "bite them off", I suspect. When she finally managed to untie herself and get to the back fence to call us for help, afterwards, she could hardly talk. She just stood there, all bruised and bloody. When security arrived at the gate, it took some persuading to get her to go round there and open up for them. There were more such incidents in that neighbourhood (including two "near misses" at our place, where we spotted them in time). In one they were quite nice for a change. The neighbour over the back fence was pregnant, and they didn't hurt her after they'd smashed the iron gate at the kitchen door and got in. (Even a quite good security door is good for only about 30 seconds, if ever you find things take a turn for a worse like this, at your place.)

"A person isn't safe anywhere these days". But "It's a good life if you don't weaken". Unless of course you're "Locked in the trunk of a car" in "Bobcaygeon"! That would be Tragically Hip, even for a "Wheat King", instead of being "Ahead by a century"!😁 (Pardon the lack of capitals, I'm tired).
