As someone who always played New Super Mario Bros Wii with my cousins when I was little I loved it. Since, I've become way more bored with them considering how many exist now. Mario Wonder, however, looks great and I honestly have high hopes.

No matter what happens, New Super Mario Bros. DS will always have a place in my heart. It's the most unique of the four games (a lot of ideas and enemies never came back), and still has a lot of charm. The secrets, the minigames, the boss fights! One of my favorite Mario games to this day, and Wonder has me so excited.

It had also been a decade since we had a 2D Mario given that NSMB came out in 2006 and the last 2D Mario before that was Yoshi’s Island in 1995 (or Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins in 1992 if you don’t think YI counts.)

I think new super Mario bros Wii was the peak. I think that it improved on almost every thing the ds one had, except the side modes. After new super Mario bros Wii I feel like that is when the new super Mario bros series started to feel like they weren't trying anymore.

i don't think yoshi is playable like the others. We see him as a mount in the trailer, it would look really weird if yoshi was riding another yoshi. The fact that everyone was yoshi makes me think it's a special level or special event in a level because I don't think you could play as like 4 marios or 4 daisies for example.

The little expressive animations are what sold me on this game. It's the small details that show how much care the developers put into a work. Just from that alone, you can tell this one is going to be different in the best way possible.

TBF the original NSMB was really kind of innovative in its return to the 2D style. We hadn’t had a 2D Mario in 10 years. Mario seemed perfectly content to be a 3D platformer forever. But then NSMB comes out and I remember being blown away at the awesome update of the 2D style platformer. But then they only ever made games in the NSMB style and it just got stale.

Wonder is awesome because we finally have a game where the idea isn’t the exact same, while the plot is always gonna be the same, Mario games have levels that you remember, so the story isn’t most memorable, so having 4 games have the same levels for like 10 years was annoying, finally we get to experience something new!

NSMB and NSMBU(including the Luigi expansion) were actually really good, but in NSMBU’s case it’s innovations were sort of too little too late. Wonder is exactly what 2D Mario needs right now

I feel like NSMB DS only catches heat for having the word new in the title when it has a lot of great things to offer. - The new power ups which I'll admit are a little uninspired on paper but are all excellent and fun in practice - The soundtrack. No extra commentary needed - The bosses were all fun and unique instead of only being slight variations of one another in both character design and attack mechanics - A much more accessible version of 64 DS' minigames right on the title screen - Just a great general vibe and art style that later entries in the New series failed miserably at replicating

I love the thought that Wonder could be the first Mario game for a generation of kids. I grew up with NSMB Wii, and while it holds a special place in my heart, I agree that the series had gotten old. But something as uniqe and refreshing as Wonder not only makes a great game, but also will make a great first Mario game for people first getting into the series.

Hot take: I like New Super Mario Bros. DS way more than World. World might have been more innovative, but New Soup controls so much better and has stronger level designs and themes imo. I always love going back to it. Meanwhile I got bored of World after like three castles. I thought it might be a nostalgia thing, but I recently played Super Mario Land 2 and thought it was great, so idk. But Wonder is absolutely the fresh rebirth that 2D Mario needed. After DS (and ig Wii to an extent) it felt like 2D Mario was just going through the motions. This is the most excited a lot of people (including myself) have been for a 2D Mario since DS.

2006 NSMB: Mario's return to 2D platforming since 1992's Mario Land 2! It's 2D but he has the ground pound and wall jump from the 3D platformers! New power-ups, a fun 2-player battle mode and a mini-game mode! Oh boy! 2009 NSMB Wii: The first 2D platforming Mario game on a console since 1991's Mario World! New power-ups, the return of the Koopa Kids since the 90's, and up to 4 people can play through the game simultaneously! Excellent! 2012 NSMB 2: Coins, 1 new power-up, the debut of paid DLC, and no new music for the levels whatsoever......meh. 2012 NSMB U: 1 New power-up, gamepad shenanigans, a challenge mode, new music, and more creative level themes. Better than the last game but the series as a whole feels tired now.

As someone who grew up with New Super Mario Bros DS and Wii as their go to 2D mario games (and Mario Galaxy as the go to 3D Mario Game), I can tell you, it didn't feel corporate back then, rather "a step up" from the pixel graphics and from the 90s 3D graphics, yet I get your whole point and wholeheartedly agree, that the new mario 2D look was needed and is well deserved for the series :) Oh yeah, Mario as Benjamin Blümchen (a german children Elefant Cartoon figure) is the funniest thing ever xD

Lets be honest, the New Soup series got stale after Wii. First it was New Super Mario Bros DS:"Holy hell, a new 2D Mario game, on a Portable! Thats cool as hell. I can take the Plumber on the road, and I can play as Luigi?! Hell yeah." Then New Super Mario Bros Wii:"Finally, Mario is back on the home console! Yes! And 4 person Multiplayer?! This is gonna be chaotic as hell! I love it." Followed by New Super Mario Bros. 2:"Uh...this...just looks like New Soup Bros DS, just with the Koopalings from Wii, and a heavy focus on coins..." And finally New Super Mario Bros U:"Okay this just looks like Wii, with a Flying Squirrel Power Up. Bruh..." In a vacuum, isolated by themselves, each game is good individually. But when you look at the entire picture and realize, Nintendo had veen releasing basically the same game with some minor differences for about a decade or so, it really sours all of the games

I always love it when 2D Mario has a big roster of playable characters and the fact that we already have six makes me happy. Mario, Luigi, Toad(Yellow), Peach, Daisy, and Yoshi. My greed does hope we get a few more though. Rosalina, Wario and Waluigi to name a few. I also hope the characters retain their somewhat signature abilities. Peach and Daisy get a little float, Rosalina gets the Spin attack, Wario gets a charge dash attack, etc...

I mean... They made Yoshi playable. I think we're gonna get unique character attributes here. Peach with her float, Toad with his high speed, Luigi with his slipperiness and high jumping, Yoshi with the flutter jump... but this makes me wonder what *Daisy* will have - she's a distinct character from Peach, so her just sharing Peach's gimmick would feel wrong.

I grew up on the New Super Mario’s, so I was initially surprised and not agreeing with the change from New to Wonder. But after even just a few hours after watching the trailer, I got exponentially more on board with it, and am still getting excited for it even now. It’ll be interesting for me and people who grew up on the New games rather than the OG ones to compare it.

I totally agree with everything here. The New games were fine on DS and Wii (nothing groundbreaking), but as they continued milking the series, it just ended up feeling a bit dull and uninspired. I'm glad Nintendo is trying something wild here! I appreciate when Nintendo isn't afraid to try something weird with their games. Not all their experiments are successful, but this at least looks like an interesting change of pace. I'm definitely looking forward to this one. I mean, Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island was a huge departure from the original 2D Marios before it, but it ended up being a masterpiece. I'm glad Nintendo is going a little nuts this time around!

Eh... the older games were all actually different from eachother and had their own charm. The New series (especially NSMBU) were sorta just copy-pastes with minimal changes. DS was great though (I grew up with that game, so... personal bias), and I'd say Wii is fine, though I don't remember it much - 2 and U are fun, but... they're not really *new* or *original* or *interesting* - ESPECIALLY in U's case.

Y'know, as a kid, I never got to play an official 2D Mario game. I knew Super Mario Bros 3 through the cartoon, played my fair share of flash games, like Mario's Haunted House, Super Mario 63, some boss fighting thing with bosses from other franchises, and even Koopa's Revenge! And the closest thing I played to a 2D-Mario-like was Super Tux. I tried my hand at mobile emulation, games on the go, but touch screen controls suck balls for platformers. So, I did the unthinkable. I modded my 3DS to play some Super Mario games! And... they were a treat! The first one was fun to run through in an hour, but then I went over to the Advance games. SMB2 was wacky and quite a load a fun, SMB3 is now my favorite 2D Mario game as of now, and Super Mario World... eh. I dunno why. I beat the first castle and just kinda didn't feel like keep going. I guess I just didn't feel that gripped by it. Maybe it was the artstyle, the inconsistent sprite work, or maybe my brain just isn't fond of the spin jump. So I guess you could say I'm one a those who'd say that SMB3 is better than World. But it doesn't matter, Yoshi's Island is better than both!!! When it comes to the NSMB series... honestly, I'd only play the first one, for the DS. It's the least refined, the first one that still had to push some edges in how they wanted it to play and feel, which means it's the one with most differences from the others in that series. Plus, I've always loved the look of DS games. But honestly, I'm really happy and excited for Wonder! Something so different and new, and it looks fun! I feel like the very few folks who are skeptical of it, or don't like the style, either are hardcore fans of NSMB (must be because they see it as a "classic" Mario experience, even though it's simpler than some of the older, actual classics in the series), or are people that have been so used to the NSMB style, that an HD 2D Mario in any other style looks weird to them.

The main innovation in the New Super Mario Bros series was surely simultaneous multiplayer. But even if you enjoyed those games, they've been quite similar for a while. They needed something to make them different.

To be fair, when New Super Mario Bros first came out, it WAS new, but it just got so overstated and corporate because it was the only thing they decided to do for years

The series never really went back to the exploration aspect of Super Mario World. There were so many areas that could only be unlocked by bringing a new powerup to an old level. The Yoshi/Koopa shell mechanic was the best part. Finding rare Yoshi colors snd taking them to older levels to find new secrets was so fun. And there were so many levels and secrets that you could easily imagine finding new areas even after everything is found. New Super Mario Bros stripped a lot of these mechanics, and it's disappointing. Hopefully Wonder can either restore some of this, or find a way to be more fun in a different way.

New Super Mario Bros (DS) is a creative game, but it often gets labeled generic because it's in the New series, or forgotten which is a common occurrence for games on portables. I really like that game
