This was the first Dragonlance novel I read. I had no idea what was going on. I reread it many, many novels later and was appropriately devastated.

I do wish Weis and Hickman would’ve been allowed to finish the trilogy.

This was a great recap thank you! The art selections were amazing as always, I didn't think there was that much art out there for the Chaos War era. Tanis' death crushed me when I first read this and every subsequent reading since. But dying to protect your friend's son is the ultimate act of heroism and loyalty and is fitting for my favorite literary character of all time

I agree.

One other thought your video reminded me - Chaos' minions not only killed but they erased their victims entirely from time and all memories from the survivors. The gamer in me thinks this could be an interesting story beat for a campaign - a party of heroes is hired by a woman who has tortured dreams of a son she never had. They have to investigate and travel to the abyss itself to save that soul and restore a lifetime of cherished memories to the mother...

That’s quite a high level campaign concept.

@DragonLance Saga yeah, haha definitely not for newbies!

What do you think about Ionthas? Was It an Aspect of Chaos? A fallen god, as suggested later, or some kind of Demon Lord? I find sources contraddictory about it.
@DLSaga Жыл бұрын
Weis and Hickman refer to Ionthas as a partner to the High God. He was as powerful just rather than order, chaos.

It's a shame that Mina never fought Chaos with the other gods. Because of Mina, the gods had to return to Krynn. It created a very curious problem for the gods, because the races of Krynn viewed the gods as having abandoned them and some became mistrustful.
@DLSaga Жыл бұрын
The gods found Krynn again due to Goldmoon and Tas. Mina was only involved as she was doing Takhisis’ bidding.

This was a good part of the Dragonlance series for me but not because of the story but because of my personal meta around it. It was the point were I had realized was okay leaving D&D behind. I know what the story you were talking about from friends and took a hard pass. I don’t know if it was my second or third time DMing - I was doing a bit of that and writing and life so when this had come out I had not read books for Dragonlance in a while. I would pick them up once I got around to it but it was in the pile of when I get the time I am going to read these books. The big problem they had was that they couldn’t seem to shift away from the first heroes of the lance and the original war to something interesting. I tried to hang on mind you but it was just not clicking as in a must read it now kind of inch. Don’t get me wrong, so many of the writers were good but the stores didn’t have the inspiration they needed to get me there. The ultimate proof was the end of the chaos saga (in the broad strokes). Chaos was in the stone before and all the god did not have to go. Magic existed and didn’t have to go before but now it has to? Why? Because we say so. Back then I thought to myself.. They could have used this moment to have the Gods pass the power to new Gods and the world reform and the names of say the heros of the lance be included as gods of a new and revitalized Kyrnn…And then it hit me - I was writing a new world. Like the worlds I made for my players. I had just outgrown the material as in I now wanted to create it and “knew” I could do it better. The spark of reading the story and learning from them was different. I had my own stories and characters. I still loved the first stories but now I was no longer the wide eyed kid at the seat of the storyteller. In game terms, I had grown and changed and past level 20 without knowing it. I had outgrown the world. They were not to blame - I was. Dragonlance was all that held me back from leaving D&D and I had outgrown the world. I could see where all the gears were. Why everything existed. It was time. I left D&D and did not return till 5e exploded on the scene. I still loved the setting and those first stories that taught me so much and that is why i am here. Celebrating the cradle that helped me grow as a storyteller myself.

Interesting experience you had with the game and material. Thanks for sharing.

But will this stand? The breaking of the Greygem is clearly pointed to in the latest novel as the key moment that turned down Krynn down a path of death and subjugation with the coming of the Dragon Overlords and the War of Souls. On a personal note I believe with the current time travel saga we may see a divergent (to borrow a bit from the TVA (Marvel)) true timeline. What that new timeline will look like would be speculation.

I don’t personally think Weis and Hickman are going to reset the River of Time.

Out of curiosity, was the battle in this video where Ariakan died the same one where Ausric Krell betrayed him, or no?
@DLSaga Жыл бұрын
Yep, that was added in the war of souls, but it was the time.

@@DLSaga Yeah, that makes sense (I haven't read Dragons of Summer Flame but saw the Krell incident mentioned elsewhere).

That was a bad idea for the setting. Lets take a game about magic and gods then remove the magic and gods...
