The Flowey monologue really resonated with me. I find it really sad that he found this one person that he thinks can understand him, only to have that person turn on him. A lot of the characters in the genocide route end up becoming the best versions of themselves, which makes it even sadder when you kill them.
@suitov Жыл бұрын
Yes. It's so cruel, but so clever, that this route is where the characters are at their most brave, heroic, cunning. It always gets me. In both pacifist and geno we out-Flowey Flowey. We out-willpower a god and we out-evil a devil.
@egg_lord_gaming911 ай бұрын
To be fair, you only kill Flowey because HE ruined the plan that you both plotted: killing everything. He destroyed Asgore's SOUL, so you had no way to leave, and there was nothing left for you to do except kill him. Maybe out of anger, maybe because you were already planning to kill him from the start, but he could've prevented his own death if he didn't destroy Asgore's SOUL, trapping both of you there until, eventually, you reach the conclusion that the only monster left to kill is yourself. So you do. But maybe, after you kill Flowey, you use the information Asriel gave you about Chara in the Pacifist route to subconsciously hallucinate that Chara is there with you. You're clearly already insane long before this point, so hearing voices would make sense. *Chara* probably isn't the one who kills you, but while you hallucinate, you imagine that they're the one stabbing you, not realizing that you've actually stabbed yourself. Then, you die. The game closes, and you get another chance to reset. Chara doesn't take Frisk's in-game SOUL, but you sold your *actual* SOUL to them the moment you decided to take a life. You were already long gone at that point, you just didn't know it yet.

This is random, but I something I didn't really think about in Undertale until recently was the fact that Sans is a character foil to Flowey. While Sans has a more traditionally frightening character design with his skeletal features, he actually tries to help you out in a way and only attacks you when you're beyond saving. Meanwhile Flowey has a more cute and appealing design (not including Photoshop Flowey) but tries to hurt you quite often and attacks you when you don't kill or save everyone. He only helps you when you become soulless like him. Even in this video at 3:04 when both these characters are mentioning that you're not human, they're starring in the opposite directions.

It’s also good to point that both of them are the ones who judge you and your actions. Flowey judges you at the end of The Ruins, pretty much at very early beginning of the game, depending of what you did and if you killed monsters or not. Meanwhile Sans judges you at the Judgement Hall, the very end of the game, by how many monsters or LOVE you have gained through your journey.

Flowey is a character I boomeranged so hard when I learned about context to him in game. Going from hatred to pity. Especially since, I usually give merit to characters or folks who TRY to be better. And to Flowey's credit, he tried in the beginning to FEEL something, ANYTHING and hell in Genocide HE'S the one to feels like this is overkill and doesn't need to happen on the surface as well. Flowey, in any run I feel has something about him I can't help but feel something for in a positive light. That detail in the Genocide route to the Neutral Route where you learn he talks to Papyrus a lot. Sure maybe it's manipulation but even though he says he saw the world as effectively as a game at this point, why still make the effort for Papyrus in particular? Or a better example, dialogue from the canceled app. Where Toriel gets drunk off her ass during a holiday party and Flowey, predictably, describes how pathetic she was but yet, still helped her home and even put water at her bedside. I don't know if Flowey was puzzled as to why he did so or was a tsundere about it but Flowey despite the shit he's done is not all bad. He as Asriel (and imo Chara) tried to do good but it ended so, so badly. Hell in the end of True Pacifist when Flowey BEGS you not to reset the world and if you do, take his memories too, that says a lot. It felt like due to you in that run, Flowey got much needed closure and maybe would've lived on as a mischievous flower or a atoning one or so but, we won't know but have to let everyone live their lives and to move on to our next journey.

The game constantly plays with expectations, and having you name the fallen human that turns out not to even be the character that you're playing is just one of the expectations played with. To make you project yourself onto Frisk before realizing, whoop, they're not me at all. But the greater implications of this momentary identity crisis that the player is meant to experience doesn't seem to reach everyone. Even Chara's own adoptive brother refers to them with neutral pronouns multiple times. For a game with multiple queer themes, including trans ones, especially including the number of characters who are referred exclusively to with neutral pronouns (because Toby has attention to detail to well beyond just game mechanics and music), there's no reason to think that Asriel was repeatedly using neutral pronouns just so that you could re-imagine his dialogue with whatever gender you want for Chara.

That has always hit so hard for me, with flowey saying you could destroy everything after a pacifist run. I have done 3 pacifist runs in total, 1 on pc and 2 and my ps4, I have also done several neutral runs and unfortunately 1 genocide run. I did the genocide run not to long after my first pacifist run, and the run… it broke me, with everyone being gone and the sad music to add on to that, when I eventually came to fight Sans I just felt like shit. It took me so many tries to beat him, and I eventually had to restart the run since I didn’t have enough healing items. And in the second run I felt like flowey, soulless I just saw every encounter as an obstacle every monster as a few pixels I didn’t care. When I eventually fought Sans again I would win, (even though it took a while). And the events that followed both with flowey and Chara really hit hard and shook me. I felt so bad over what I did so I got the game for ps4 and played pacifist there, and when the game was complete Flowey talked about the thing, how I could destroy everything and so I didn’t. I let the game be and let that world live on until today. I later started another pacifist run on another profile on the ps4 and did the same thing with not resetting that file either So yeah this video was… really good great with the vid 👏

My favorite moment is pretty similar, it comes later. VERY later. After massacring everyone in the Underground, you feel bad. You want to go back. So you reset, and you do it all again. You do a true pacifist run, just like the first time you played. But when it ends, you see that CHARA's spirit (Not Chara, the first fallen human. , the spirit you awakened after doing a geno run), has possessed you. But that's not the best part. The best part is that you can undo that. It takes work. You have to destroy your Steam Cloud data, but if you want to, if you're DETERMINED enough, you can fix it. You can make the world go back to how it's supposed to be. I've seen a lot of people saying that when Toby Fox made it so difficult, he was saying "after you did this, it can never be undone." But I've never read it that way. When Toby Fox made it near-impossible to reset, he was saying "You can change, you can fix everything, but if you really want to, it won't be easy." Anyone change, but not everyone .

@ElSeñorBolainas-Sr3 Жыл бұрын
I just realized something. So, Chara says that she'll bring your world back, but you'll have to give them your SOUL, and so, after that, you do other runs, but soulless. Flowey said that he couldn''t feel anything for anyone, nor did he feel compasion or love. He doesn't say he didn't feel "any emotion", he just mentions love, compasion, and the happiness of being with other. Flowey also says that he realized how pointless the world was after having the ability to reset and try any route or thing possible, since he realized that, by doing all those things, the underground monsters just become series of codes and dialogues The thing I'm trying to say is: Flowey didn't feel any love or happiness to be with the monsters being soulless, since he did no longer held those feelings and seeing how everyone acted as codes and dialogues made him realize how pointless they were. This represents what happens to us after Chara resets the world, we don't feel anything for those characters since we already know that nothing will change from them, they are just non-existing characters from a game, and getting a happy ending doesn't seem appealing or something that matters anymore. So yes, Chara taking our soul represents what happens to the player in real life, no longer holding feelings of love to those who we once loved.

My favorite part of Undertale is the risks it takes and its uniqueness for example if you don’t have any emotional attachment to the characters, you just keep killing and killing till you get to Papyrus who you first start to see the consequences when you kill him. Then when you face Undyne it makes it clear that Undyne is the hero and that makes you wonder what are you? You’ve been a murderer but you did it because of… what exactly? Then you proceed to start to feel guilt as all the monsters start to mourn for each other. Keep going to the end and karma starts to build up. And at that point instead of wondering “why am I murdering all the monsters?” You instead think “how should I murder all the monsters?” And one more thing, all the monsters don’t show that much killing intent and unless aggravated, you can befriend them, even after killing many of their friends

@@Shilsey Oh gosh tbh I can't actually rank mine, and I have quite a few...but notable ones to me are Deltarune (was honestly surprised that I could like it better than UT) and Undertale, Omori, the Portal games, Okami, Minecraft, The Kitten and The Magic Hat (localized in America as Catz Petz 2, very special to me as it's a childhood game which really fueled my love of gaming and stories), and Minecraft Story Mode by Telltale (controversial I know but I do genuinely really enjoy it). i unironically have a similar trajectory than the one showed in this video but with a very crucial difference:i don't have undertale for context: i met undertale back when i was 10/11, at the time i didn't had the money to buy the game so i just watched core(a brazilian youtuber)'s videos about the game and i got addicted to it to the point where i started scouring youtube for more of the game lore and when i eventually learned everything there was to know i still thirsted for more wich eventually led me to meet the AUs that the community created wich led to fangames wich eventually led to the realization that a lot of UT fangames based on AUs don't do just to the game's story being just a fight against a sans that doesn't even feel like himself and while i did remain a undertale fan i started to neglect a lot of the impact this game had on me, a lot of my drive to learn complicated lore for games(wich would eventually draw me to kirby and KH) comes from this era and i just associated it to liking kirby lore instead of undertale essentially removing the world from myself without even noticing... until this year my physics teacher and i were talking about things that didn't had anything to do with the class(as we usually do sometimes because of our mutual love for popculture usually leads us to do before retuning to class) and he knowing that i'm an undertale fan asked me about the lore of the game wich i then spend the next half an hour explaining to him even as i was responding the questions, and it was then when i noticed how much i had neglected this side of myself

Its funny that this video was recommended to me a couple days after getting the True Pacifist ending and a few weeks after finishing a Neutral ending for the first time. Both times I expressed never going Genocide/No Mercy. Having seen this, it just cemented my logic for why. There just is no point. No reward. No goal (except to kill everyone). No logic. No soul. No secrets. The longer it goes the more the music goes funny or just disappears entirely. Even Flowey knows you’re just doing it for the 100% factor.

I think it's interesting that even in friendlier routes, most monsters have forgotten what humans look like. It's been so long since one fell down that entire generations have grown up without ever seeing one outside of "human history tapes" (movies) that occasionally fall underground from the dump. In a sense, the monsters have de-humanized the human race not by choice but by separation. So, when something hellbent on destroying all the monsters comes down in an already unfamiliar form, why WOULDN'T they see that as some kind of eldritch horror? Especially with the prophecy in mind, the monsters now see you as the grim reaper or an angel of death. Sans already knew you were a time/space anomaly, but even the monsters who know what humans look like pick up on the fact that something beyond Frisk (the player) is in control here, and it's completely alien to them.

@gabrote42 Жыл бұрын
Omori on 2nd best game is very good. I personally like that one more (Until DR fully releases, which I think will be better) 0:24 Real classics. I recommend you Ghost Trick if you haven't played it :) 1:23 I absolutely love this scene. Flowey is the embodiment of the Average Player. And as such he knows that if you booted up the game again... Well, why would you do that if not to Turn Back Time? 2:34 The average genocide run player that quits, quits at Papyrus. That was gathered from over two hundred genocide run stories Only a minority go back and spare Toriel. 4:41 Fun fact: Neutral Undyne death is widely voted as the saddest scene in the whole game. At least here she dies smiling. There she _just_ misses the second wind and just... Melts. 5:12 This is the area where the music slowdown changes. Now it's a melodious lament for your actions, instead of trying to scare you off of the route. Now the game just wants to bore you out while making it clear this is the worst possible outcome. 5:52 If anyone doubted that Flowey is supposed to be The Player mirror, this is where that notion is made unambiguous and objective. 7:13 That actually comes later in the scene. He read every piece of dialogue, did all the nice options, then killed when there were no more. Only he couldn't pass Asgore or Sans. 9:25 Not quite. This is still YOU doing the actions. Chara will let you go scot-free right up and until you hit ENTER at Flowey's last line. You can even kill Sans 50 times, or Kill Asgore Once, and they'll let you go, just like that. If you don't quit, that's a you problem, they say. 10:16 You are also an eldritch, red being. Very much unlike the other humans. But yes, you earn Level Of Violence right along the two humans. 11:01 Not really. Some stuff like FMA:B and Ghost Trick are enjoyed Once by most people.

Great video! Your top 5 is very interesting btw. But while I'd understand why not everyone would put Minecraft on top like me, for me Omori barely surpasses Undertale because of it's also superb soundtrack, active and somewhat realistic battle mechanics and good characters. Jk the thing with Omori is not only all of that, but the huge, HUGE emotional overflow and the massive plot twist at the end of the game that made it the first game to make me cry that easily. It doesn't break the fourth wall like UT or DDLC, but still, it's simply perfect. Also indie games better than AAA games. And dw Undertale is third I didn't let it down.

Just like sans said… the more you gain… the more you distance yourself you first try the genocide route and you kill every monster, just to feel emotional and not wanting to do this. Once you kill toriel, its all over, no one can stop you from progressing. When you get to snowdin, all that emotion just starts to fade… like sans said, you kept killing, and your emotion keeps fading. When it comes to waterfall, you lost it all, theres no coming back unless you STILL have that tiny bit of good inside of you. Once you kill undying, and you celebrate, Its all gone… all that caring you did back in the ruins, GONE. Yet sans tried to warn you multiple times, be honest… you liked killing them all after you got past snowdin.

I see those “you’re not human” lines as being directed towards Frisk, the player character. They’re not a “living being” like the rest of the characters, they’re just a vessel for you to control. It makes Flowey’s speech there more interesting, since while he believes he’s finally found that special, unpredictable someone that he could live alongside without getting bored of them, he’s still just another sprite, just another set of dialogue to you. You become Flowey, even in regard to Flowey himself. It also means that, while you can reset your LV value ingame via resetting the save file, it will never reset it within your own heart. The damage is done, you will never see these characters with the same love as you did the first time around. Not if you’ve “read every book, burned every book”. It also makes the choice to stay with them in the Pacifist ending pointless because once the credits roll, you do end up leaving them. You either reset and force them back underground or leave them forever and let them be happy without you. Making the choice that you want to stay with them is just the game’s way of letting you lie to yourself, letting you daydream of living happily with all these characters on the surface, even though in all reality, if you’re not there ingame, what would your vessel be doing with them? They, or rather, it, can’t move or make decisions without a player’s input, so there’s no way “Frisk” can live happily with all “their” friends. It’s a horribly sad way of looking at the game, but that’s the point. This is what you get for desensitizing yourself with Genocide and the endless possibilities of the Neutral endings. In the end, you are the same as Flowey.
@Shilsey11 ай бұрын
I've seen this interpretation around alot, but Ill be honest I don't really agree with it as it would imply that not only sans and flowey are meta, but asgore(kind of is already) and especially Undyne is aswell, which I just very much don't agree with. for the second paragraph, I do agree and If I remember this video correctly I gave a line or 2 to saying when you click the true reset button you remove the world from yourself, which with I meant that you remove the emotional attachment the moment you do that. leaving the game being like the games way of letting you lie to yourself is a cool one I haven't seen before, but I don't really agree, since Frisk is shown to atleast have their own emotions, which means that they probably would be able to still live their life. although I don't agree with this comment, it is a VERY VERY cool way of looking at the game, and I do love this comment so thanks!

I wish I could somehow go in blind to replay, because the narrative hit all the right notes, but I played them in the wrong key. My own genocide route playthrough was after a particularly bad experience with the fandom. Because of that, a lot of the subtleties escaped me and I didn't get the intended experience, because I did something the game didn't expect. I _hadn't actually_ fallen quite as far as Flowey; I still had emotional attachment to the game's world, it just happened to be the _wrong_ emotion. I didn't attack everyone out of a detached sense of completionism-Heck, I hadn't even beaten the pacifist route (and still haven't); I attacked everyone out of active, genuine _hatred._ The scenes that were supposed to hit me and make me rethink how I viewed the game instead only reinforced how my rage-addled, fandom-tainted self _already_ viewed the game back then: a preachy, holier-than-thou guilt trip that needed to be silenced, just like its fandom at the time. That was eight years ago, and of course I've considerably calmed down since then. But unless something can make me actually forget what's there, I'm pretty much locked out of the experience I was supposed to get which made the game mean so much to so many people.
