I got to see Charlie and the band, back in the early 90's. When they played this song, Charlie actually brought out a special fiddle, painted sparkly gold.

There's a sequel to this song, set ten years later. Famous country artists Johnny Cash, Travis Tritt and Marty Stuart join Charlie. Cash voices a narrator to the story, Tritt voices the devil, and Stuart voices Johnny. Charlie plays the devil's fiddle part. A session musician named Mark O'Connor plays Johnny's fiddle parts, and goes even harder. You'll swear his fiddle is about to catch on fire. The sequel is called "The Devil Comes Back to Georgia".

To be fair, our modern cell phones were as much science fiction at that point as Captain Kirk's communicator from Star Trek, to most people, at that point. That was 1979, we were impressed with the fact that Barnaby Jones and Cannon had corded car phones, lol. But, your point is valid. They were there for the experience, not to record the performance so that they could tell others, "See? I was there."
