Classic southern rock, this song was so huge when it came out. A song that tells a good story is the best of all.

At the time it was recorded it was Southern Rock, later it would be considered Outlaw Country as Charlie Daniels is one of the genre founding members. I don't know why we feel the need to define music so narrowly but we do.

Charlie Daniels was considered a "crossover" band who were able to accomplish that rare feat of being on the Country music charts as well as the Pop/Rock charts at the same time. Its actually the beginning (along with others of course)of the Country Rock genre.

I don't know about every member of the band but Charlie Daniels himself became an extremely religious man and publicly described himself as a Christian. In fact, he got where he was not comfortable with the words of the song and he changed what Johnny said to the Devil to: "I done told you once, you son of a GUN, I'm the best there's ever been." And yes he was also extremely patriotic. He was very vocal about his religion and he was very vocal about how much he loved his country. "Chicken in the bread pan pickin' out dough, Granny does your dog bite, no child no" were old old lines that were said by men who were calling out cadences for square dancing. I don't think the sentences were intended to mean a whole lot; it's just that the cadence was right for dancing to, so the caller used them. The Charlie Daniels band borrowed them from those old-time square dance calls.

Charlie became the kind of person he used to sing about in his song Uneasy Rider. I've always been uneasy around people who flip their beliefs later in life

The version of the song recorded for radio always said "son of a gun". It's not like he thought that up later in life. The crowd that went to his concerts later in life were mostly older fans who were at the concerts with their kids and grandkids and "son of a bitch" was not really appropriate for that crowd.

Another great reaction!! I never much cared for country music either, but this is difficult to "not like". Charlie passed away in 2020, but he definitely epitomized everything great about our once proud nation - patriotic, ethical, religious, kind. Alas, most of those qualities are rapidly declining. 😢😢😡

Speaking as one of Charlie's originals fans who first started listening to him in 1972 with his hit uneasy Rider I quit listening to him in the 80s because of his political stance, which was the opposite of what he started out with.

@@courtney5796 I didn't give up part of my life I still listen to his old music which was much more Rock oriented. The main reason I quit listening to him was because he went country. Speaking as a Nashvillian who has lived here all my life I dislike most country music as only a Nashville native can 😁😁 as a human being Charlie was one great person knowing that living here now in Mount Juliet where he was based. it's just he said some pretty nasty things to say about liberals and Democrats in the early 2010's

I saw Charlie Daniels and Travis Tritt in concert (for my first time) in Oklahoma in December of 2019. Charlie was so dope and could still shred on his fiddle. He expressed his love for the USA, its citizens, and especially its men and women in uniform protecting our freedom and there was not one dry eye in the theater. He also saw a young boy in the front row who was dancing to the music and Charlie walked right over to him in the middle of a song and gave his bow to the boy. Pretty awesome souvenir and memory for that youngster. Now that he has passed I’m deeply saddened but also thankful that I decided to buy that ticket and drive from Texas to Oklahoma to see him perform. As I sat there just a few rows back I was amazed at how spry he was for being in his 80s. It just goes to show you that life is precious, health is paramount, and every day is a gift. RIP Charlie!

I had the great privilege to work with him in Alabama after the 2018 JSU Tornado and again in Mt Juiliet TN after the 2020 Tornado. He was more than a great entertainer, he was a great person. I was absolutely beyond shocked when he greated me by name in 2020 two years after we had met. He did care a great deal about this country, his community and above all it's people. When he attended an event or fundraiser he would insist on being introduced to the people behind the scenes and thanking them personally for "making things happen".

Charlie Daniels was so musically gifted it almost should have been illegal. Technically profitient on a multitude of instruments other than just a fiddle. Charlie was one of those rare musicians that you could have handed a washboard to and he could've plucked you out a tune on it. Saw him live in 1983 with the Marshall Tucker Band and both bands were fantastic!

The part of the lyrics you found confusing: "Fire on the Mountain Run, Boys, Run Devil's in the House of the Rising Sun Chicken in the bread pan, pecking out dough Granny, does your dog bite? No, chile, no." Are all titles to or lyrics of traditional folk songs. The devil played modern music, and Johnny beat him with traditional folk music.

The line, "Chicken in the bread pan pickin' out dough" has been a song lyric and used in square dancing for a very long time, like maybe forever. It's a Country song staple and used as a lighthearted lyric to bring fun and nostalgia to the music. However, as it's been said, it's true, if you put a chicken into anything, a chicken would peck at whatever it is you have there, even dough 😁😊👍. Charlie Daniels didn't just do Country music though, he was a crossover artist, often fusing Country, Jazz, Rock and Blues into his songs. Update: I forgot to mention, you should do his song, Uneasy Rider next. It's about a "long-haired hippy type" in the middle of the late 60's, when Country & Western music lovers didn't take kindly to that, which makes the song a hoot🦉(i.e. fun/funny) !!!

About 3 hours after this show, they were headed from Saratoga Springs NY to Montgomery Alabama. Their bus broke down and my dad was a coach bus driver at that time, and got a call in the middle of the night to drive the Charlie Daniels Band down south. The stories he told make Willie Nelson's bus seem tame.

This song is a story about going to the crossroads and selling your soul for fame and fortune. A few giants in the musical history of the 20th century were said to have sold their soul. Robert Johnson wrote Crossroad blues back in 1937 about selling his soul to have the devil tune his guitar and suddenly he (Robert) was the best at the time.

Hi again and thanks - You ask about if these guys are religious and you have a sense of them being honorable and such. I think you are right to feel these guys abide by a basic honorable code a large majority of the USA did at this time. Strictly speaking, a boastful kid outperforming and beating the devil is not something the "church" would get behind, but you already see the different metaphor uses and how this entertains different thoughts.

Though he had many great songs, my personal favorite is "My Beautiful America - The Charlie Daniels Band (Official Video)" where he recites "My Beautiful America" to images and an acoustic guitar serenade. You can feel the great love he had for America. Love your reactions. Don't be afraid of country it is a great story telling music. the parts that confused you are traditional call outs from hoedowns or hootin-annies. for square dancing. "hoedown" as in put your hoes down and stop working it is time to dance instead. Country folks and farmers typically worked from before dawn to after it got dark except after the harvest and during winter so when it was time to take some recreation time they went at it hard too.
