You can't really get away from class in England. Despite the great and quite cataclysmic social and economic changes that have taken place in the UK, the class system still reigns supreme as the ultimate "sorting hat" and spihon of talent,education, employment. I don't think the English can ever get away from it. Class defines you in England in ways you have no control over . Its very fascinating and sad.

"middle class" means very different things in the USA and the UK. Her idea of middle class as "not poor" is common in the states.

@maaadkat I dont know what it like to live in England with the remnants of the class system. Here Class is a socio-economic phenomenon that nobody dares talk about even though we use the terms Middle Class and Working Class. I have a BA degree from a small state college here and I have been a freelance writer for 15 years. I agree with you-you are what you make yourself.

@mikeybrumbrum I like this one... My parents both come from working class backgrounds, have worked really hard and consider themselves middle class. I went to a grant maintained Grammar school and left in 1996 with some pretty poor grades. I do not have a degree and do want one. I'm self employed through my own Ltd Company, as an IT Consultant. You are what you make yourself. If you suck at society's balls, and never imagine anything greater, you will forever be a ball sucker.

@MultiSmartass114 жыл бұрын
@Poldark3 Interesting. Class is a combination of pure economic capital and cultural capital. Even if you attain one, you can be looked down because of the other and because of the still rigid class positions in England and the UK as a whole, what you sound like, what you do for a living, what your interests and hobbies-every aspect seems to be added up and given a passing or flunking grade.

@BLUEHIPPO47 I would agree. The correct term would be New Labour and Blair's rise meant the exclusion of socialism as the reining political mindset of his Labour administration.Blair was a terrible choice for the UK people but a fine one for the elites.In essense, he has cotinue to push neoliberal economic agendas but through a seemingly liberalized face compared to the tories. Now, Gordon Brown was set up like James Callaghan in 1979 to go down with Labour's ship and usher in the Tories.

@ImaginedWriter That's a dead on remark and dovetails evenly with my own analysis of English and British society. The class system and all its basic educational, economic and social inequity is the oil that lubricates England and the UK and make it "drive" like a car. You take away or eliminate that class system and England doesnt " run" in the same way. No way the powers that be would allow that.
@MultiSmartass113 жыл бұрын
@barkyindustries Why is that? Im curious.
@MultiSmartass112 жыл бұрын
Maybe in the US which has a fluid class structure anyway. Not in the UK-not in England from what I can see. Class defines people in all encompassing ways there-from Speech to work. Granted the educational and economic opportunities are better in the 21st century than they were say in the 19th century but the rubric of class remains.

@barkyindustries Well, though I posess a reaonsable amount of knowledge about English and British society, I still dont know why you say you hate being English. Is it simply because of class?
@MultiSmartass114 жыл бұрын
@themothmanreturns I never stated that the US doesn't have a class structure. Our construct isnt as calcified and ossified as the Brits primarily because of rising and lowering of class due to factors such as education, profession and income. Our system is largely a socio-economic one which it seems England's is slowly becoming. Part of the propaganda function in the states is to exclude talk of class in any specific way.I agree-capitalism does lead to segregation.

@1988MILLWALL I think Labour has helped the working class through: vast investment in education and the NHS, the minimum wage, working tax credits, sure start childrens centres, winter fuel allowance. And if you think putting more people on the dole is going to bring the deficit down you are very much mistaken, there are jobs there and they should be invested in not cut as soon as possible.

@thedavewalkershow While ever politicians are allowed to take advantage of the system, they will. There needs to be a reform of government, which Labour and the Lib Dems agree with. The Tories say all they will do is get rid of the bad ones. This still leaves other politicians to take advantage of the system after the storm has blown over. Why is this? There's a certain Lord Ashcroft that won't let them.

Classes society?? Naaa. Upper class is nobility who are stinking rich and may or may not work, middle class are people that have enough money and don't necessarily need to work but they choose to, working class are people that have to work to live and may claim a bit of benefit that helps them make ends meet and keep them actively working, then there is benefit class who are healthy but piss lazy and sponge off the state. Nuff said.

@MultiSmartass1 Well we do not want it where you daren't even talk about it, its not a phenomenon, it is an important issue and it needs tackling head on. And it's not just down to yourself to make your way in life - everybody has a different start in life depending on your upbringing, this is why education plays such an important role. I think it is naive of you to suggest your country doesn't have a class system, capitalism does create segregation and we shouldn't simply forget it.
@modernmod8915 жыл бұрын
well if you actually knew marxist history like you claim to you'd think differently. The first revolution is the bourgeois revolution wherest the aristocracy is overthrown and a economy based on money is instilled with a parliamentary democracy that favours the middle class runs the state. There develops a tiny capitalist class, and the gap between the proletariat and this capitalists who own the means of production is widened, however a bourgeois middle class who have political power stillexist
@redmeatheart14 жыл бұрын
Why does anyone call it working class. Whats next in this sequence upper, middle...... lower. Working class people are ashamed of being lower class, Same as middle class people are ashamed of being middle class, because it implys there boring and conventional. It's only the upperclass that dont give a shit about it. Really if it's solely about money what about a person that has a masters degree but cant get a job, are they lower class?

@thedavewalkershow Don't talk rubish. Everybody espires to be rich, what is wrong with that? Given the chance anybody would take the money and everybody has not just prescott. Surely it is worse when the Tories do the same even though they have more money to start with. The point is clvss is a matter of principles, you can still be rich and help the working class, something the Tories know nothing about. Before you start accusing others look closer home, in particular Lord Ashcroft.
