My wife bought me an automatic Seiko Seahorse in stainless steel for my birthday in 1966. I had a friend who was a watchmaker and who served his apprenticeship in Switzerland before the war. I proudly showed him my new watch and he asked if he could open it to see the movement. He was very impressed with the quality of it and said “the Swiss should be worried about this standard of work.” I still wear this watch 57 years later and its accuracy is amazing. Many thanks for your video. I like your style of presentation.

Thank you. The Seiko's from the 60s where great watches and your friend was right. Seiko was pretty much responsible for the fall of the Swiss watch industry in the 70s. My wife game me a pair of socks! I'll have to have a word!

wow, what a wonderful job on the strap! now I have to order the tools and try it for myself, haha. as to Seikos, I really like the brand for the versatility and the reasonable prices, and as a hobby watchmaker I like their movements - they're _different_ from the Swiss ones, some things are absolutely brilliantly simple like their double pawl lever automatic works, and some are stupidly over-engineered like the keyless works in their 56xx series, but regardless of that they're always fun to work on. I also like that the technical communications are readily available and include the exploded views of the movement with the order of disassembly/reassembly and the oiling points (and that is of course also _different_ from the typical Swiss way of oiling).
@Saving-Time Жыл бұрын
I'm for sure going to be working on more Seiko's good to know the technical documentations is readily available. Good luck with the strap.

Seiko's are my choice of watches. In fact I just took off my 44 year old Seiko about an hour ago. And it still looks great and keeps very good time. It has the day/date/and alarm complications. My other Seiko's are all day/date. I just ordered, several days ago, a new Seiko 5 military style watch. I don't know why it took me so long to do that as I bought my first Seiko at a PX when I first got to Vietnam back in Jan of 1970. In fact that was a Bell-Matic/day/date.

If I might suggest something for your collection, if you are looking for something a little different, check out the Russian cal 2209 "Vympel" mroatman.wixsite.com/watches-of-the-USSR/vympel, made in 1961. It was just 2.9 mm thick and represented a huge technical achievement. It's not expensive, and it's not flashy, but at just 6.5 mm thick from case back to crystal, it's impressive even today. A talking point, and I think every collection should have at least one Russian watch. Thanks for the kind words.

The Bruce Lee right? Great watch I hope you enjoyed the video
@AllanT-nu4rw2 ай бұрын
@@Saving-Time Thanks for your reply,,according to the aficionados only the black dial is considered a true Bruce Lee. However the blue, brown, silver and gold dial versions are all the same watch. Mine is a blue dial version, all original, with its railroad bracelet. The hour and minute hands had to be replaced recently as many years ago due to a moisture intrusion issue they corroded around the lume. I currently have a silver dial version in line for restoration to add it to my blue dial one. I hope to find a black dial one for a decent price to restore. When it comes to cost, the brown dial is the mostly highly sought after version of them all, so go figure. The 6119-6020 or 6023 models are also gaining popularity and the rarest of these is the yellow dial version also known as the Baby Pogue, since it looks somewhat like the 6139-6002/05 models yellow dial Pogue. Even if you do not like Seikos there is hardly anyone that dislikes a Pogue for its appearance. I currently have three due to dial print variations, the 5 Speedtimer version, the resist version and the proof version.

Nice watch, watch- and strapmaking! :) That movement looks crude, but I see it was adjusted in three positions. Now, that number 7, I made a count of 7 jewels, but there might be one more on the balance staff. Brilliant video David!! Very entertaining and humorous. So honest with the little hiccups, which is actually quite refreshing to see. Everybody makes mistakes!! The performance results were very good. You really do have an excellent watch strap making talent, so does Mrs Saving-Time!! I have a tip for you for assembling the balance cock together. Flatten out some rodico into a thin layer and first lay down the cap jewel (right way round of course) and then the regulator arm. After oiling the cap jewel, when you then lay over the balance cock exactly over the cap jewel with its 2 screw holes, the rodico will hold it in exactly the right place while you tighten the screws. It's a shame that all the viewers of the Video don't press the like button. Why do people do that? They don't quite appreciate the effort it takes to produce one of these videos. Keep up the good work and I look forward to the next one!

great job! i have the same movement in a Seiko Marvel im restoring however after service the amplitude was very low, i stripped it down again and noticed that Jewell was chipped and cracked. now waiting until i can afford the Kafer micrometer to measure the chipped jewell and the pivot . Always something expensive to buy!!

Yup i feel that. I'm on the lookout for a JKA Feintaster Micrometer that i don't have to sell a kidney for, wish me luck!

Nice video; thanks for making and sharing it. I enjoyed learning more about the history of my favorite watch company. Now, regarding your query as to what Seiko watches people recommend, if you're willing to spend an arm and a leg (or sell a $350,000 house, whichever costs less), then by all means get a Grand Seiko Kodo Constant-Force Tourbillon. Or, if you're one of them cheapskates who thinks their wristwatch should cost substantially less than their house (shocking!!), then you'll have to make do with something from the Grand Seiko or Seiko Presage lines. (Or maybe a Horage Tourbillon. Not Seiko, but gorgeous, and "only" $8000.) Or, if you're one of them bloody working-class sots, like me, with a $1500/month income and $350 in the bank, you'll have to buy something in the Seiko 5 line. But don't buy anything under $200 because those are all junk (no click, no hack, short power reserve, etc). Instead, if you're going to get a Seiko 5, get something from the SRP line. The following watches all have day, date, click (auto+manual wind), and hack (time can be set to nearest second). These mostly use the 4R36 movement (which I love) and mostly cost about $250 each: SRPE77 (my favorite affordable Seiko: lumed heat-blued hands on ice-blue sunburst dial, day, date, click, hack, decompression ring) SRPD59 (white on orange, day, date, click, hack, decompression ring) SRPH33 (orange on black, day, date, click, hack) SRPG33 (olive drab w cloth strap, day, date, click, hack) SSK005 (cream on orange, no day, date, GMT, click, hack)

Thank you very much for taking the time to list out some Seiko's for me to look at. I appreciate that. Cheers
