I loved learning how to make straps. No other watchmaker has done this. More please. Thank you.

Why not Lume the face at least 12 and 6. Nice band, I'm up to I think 60. But for me.

I just finished the video! That is a wonderful looking watch! Yes, it may not be perfect.. and that adds more value to the watch! Things hand made by artisans are worth more because they are not perfect, but the more skilled an artisan is, the closer to perfect they get and the more their work is worth. But suddenly, when a steady hand isn’t required for perfection, the item loses intrinsic human value. Now you will look at that watch every day and feel something more than you ever could with an everyday watch you can buy. Not to mention, it’s likely to become a cherished family heirloom. “Dad made this watch by hand!” (Well, the dial.. 😉)

I would watch montages of you learning the skills necessary for each step. You could have whole series on these pieces, and you’d have a small but loyal following for it. What I enjoy more than seeing someone make something, is seeing how someone learns to make it. I’m here because I’m an equally meticulous person with a variety of skills but mastery in none, and I’d like to make my own watch from scratch. Of course, there is a cost(time) benefit analysis to compute.. and it sounds like after researching, I’m best off designing my case and having a machinist make it; getting a premade quality Swiss movement, and manufacturing my own dial, then pairing it with a quality vintage sourced band (or making my own out of leather or textile like you are). Making a movement involves a bit more math than I’m willing to master, but all the aesthetic aspects, I’m down to learn! I silver smith, and do a bit of facing and my goal is to make a dial that I set some custom faceted crystals into as the indices! Thanks for the video, it was a pleasure to watch and will be looking forward to more of your content!

I love your skills and your narration/banter/comedy. Perfect cadence. Your watch strap making skills are the best part, even with the assist from the wife. Keep it up! And I also like the self-deprecating bits about lessons learned. Brilliant.

Your skills are incredible. "I'll just make a new watch face." he says. "And now I'll just make this new watch strap from some leather pieces." What's next? "And now I'll just make this missing train of wheels from these old pennies."? I am beginning to think you can make an entire watch.

Hi and thanks very much for the amazing video. Superb finish! In the video you mention a cheap laser. Could you suggest one that you used for this watch face please as there are so many? Also is the software you edited the drawing in LightBurn? Many thanks, Tim

A caution on ultrasonic cleaners. Heavy use can remove treatments, such as plating. It does deem gentle. It is a bit more violent on the micro level. It uses micro cavitations to scrub the surfaces. That can be too violent for some stuff. Not often, particularly for the watches you work on. But look into that before anything too expensive.

It would be great to see you, well, rationalize the puppy. As you say, get rid of the automatic works. That top/fix plate (I didn't understand it) would be interesting to either remove all together or grind thinner. If you can find a case that fits the movement w/o the plastic holder, that would be grand. In the longer term (towards your watch making goal), if you have a friend with a 3D printer they could make a case for you. Some could print s case in a wax like media. They can then put it into plaster and use the lost wax method of pouring a bronze watch case for you. Finish it and bob's your uncle. This last bit is obviously way down your journey. Definitely talk to your friend who's a real watch maker. He likely has better ideas. This would be one way to do much of the work with only a bit of work outsourced😊.

Many thanks for the great videos. After watching so many videos one thing that would help a rookie like me is to explain what one can do behind the scenes to get organized and tackle a simple service with minimum budget just to learn. How not to mix screws, what type of optics, what basic cleaning process, lubes and so forth. At the same time, and to please tbe most advanced hobbyists would be to dive in detail indifferent phases with unique problems and not necessarily the same watch. this might require more detail but one could produce different videos with the existing recordings organized for the different levels and needs of people. thanks again.

Love that watch, you guys did a great job with the restoration! Off to watch how the strap was made now! Just a thought, if you made 2 or 3 videos on a project you could split it up into working on the case and movement seperately and the strap or dial work too. I'm not a fan of waiting a week for a follow up video but if you release them all at the same time, you will still keep your captive audience for each video but you can include all the information you want to aswell. Love your work, and i love your content!

Seiko is an interesting one. On the one hand, they democratized automatic movements with their 7s series, of which subsequent models can be found in affordable (and not so affordable) watches from many watch companies from all over the world. They are robust, reliable, and if proerly regulated, readonably accurate. On the other hand, they have some well known QC issues on their entry level watches, including dual/bezel allignment, end link to case matching and the like. Their prices have increased significantly in these entry level autos in recent years without improvements to things like bracelets, crystals, etc. But overall, Seiko makes quality time pieces at a reasonable regular guy price point.

You content is excellent. Just a question on plating...I see that you buffed the outside surface but left some nickel on the inside. Does that cause issue with plating? Or maybe copper sticks to all metals? I will try your method on an Old Pierce Chorno that is in need of refinishing. Thanks

I had posted a comment a week or so ago asking about a Bill OF Materialls (BOM) for the parts you used. That post seemed to have gotten deleted. I've looked all over your github repository for the BOM but haven't been able to locate it. Is there one available? I also asked where your sourced the cleaning baskets and holder. I'd appreciate any answers you could give.

A dial stretcher? did I hear that right? never heard of such a thing, would love a demo. I've never seen a dial being made from scratch before, thank you for all the effort involved in videoing it, I would be very happy with the dial if it were my work but it also makes you appreciate the shear detail involved in getting commercial dials to the level they have.

Very nice work indeed David. I had been playing with the idea of restoring an old L&R or similar for some months, but kept coming across auctions for something that looked as if it had been stored in a barn with no roof for 60 years, had missing parts, and sported asking prices in stupid money territory. I went with a setup using an ultrasonic with 2 beakers and a Vevor lab stirrer like Alex over at Watch Repair Tutorials. However although I had analogue speed control I wanted oscillation. Grafted in an aliexpress programmable motor controller board and power supplies into the Vevor box and moved the motor controller buttons and display to the outside of the box. So I do have full program control of forward/back/off sequencing, timing, and speed, but it totally pales in elegance to your solution. Look forward to checking out your hardware/software in more detail. For what it is worth I think you have the best all round watch tinkering content available. Apart from the movement work I really enjoy the historical overviews and the sojourns into ancillary activities like leather work, dial making, and this project are all very refreshing. One of my favourite watches is a green dialled Raketa UFO/washer, so I am pleased to see what looks like a Copernicus flash by on occasion in your videos.
