Ashley is a soil scientist who has had a passion for plants since she was a small child. In the long summers as a child, she would garden alongside her grandmother and it was then that she realized her love for greenery. With years of great studying, Ashley had begun her post-secondary education at the University of Saskatchewan.

I don't have a problem germinating beets and carrot, but they just don't grow. If I'm lucky, I'll end up with a few small ones. Don't know if it's my soil, too much/little fertilizing or not thinning enough. Some grow to a few inches, then just sit there for months doing nothing!

I start my peppers and tomatoes outside in milk Jugs once weather starts to warm up. I'm in 5b zone in BC Canada. The rest of my seeds I winter sow using milk jugs. No lights needed. Mother nature is my friend.

I grow four butternut squash plants each year. I usually get about fifty butternut squashes that store in a cool dry frost free garage for months. I still have several in the garage for last summer. You are spot on

Dont worry, you wont get that many. Nobody gets that kind of yield from butternut. Private, or commercial.

Impossible - no squash plant could support that many. Normal is about 4-5 per plant.

While the benefit isn't immediate, if you dont expect to be moving in the future, I'm grateful i planted asparagus seeds... took a few years before was harvestable but since they come back bigger/ wider every year i found them to be my favorite seed planting🤭 (I originally planted them for a tall feathery backdrop behind my flowers🤭, then moved them to garden area after they got Too big n bushy for flower garden...) I dont know if I'm supposed to, but i harvest off them for quite awhile, not just the spring sprigs... I eat the "earlies" fresh, and pickle the rest...

The year 1972, my folks always had a large veggie garden. New to us in central B.C. was veg. spagetti, and the zuk. I think we planted a row of each ( about 30 ft. ) by the end of July we were tired of the zuc because we could not give them away fast enough. Anyway, I will keep growing till I'm ready to be fertilizer.

I have not found beets easy at all! I was told the soils in my area tend to be low in boron. The hybrid variety Kestrel will perform where others fail.

Just took a cooking class. Needed to bring two herbs. $6 at Atlantic superstore. Herbs in your garden definitely. Rhubarb is pretty easy and you can often get it for free from a neighbour

Unless a special variety for fun, I don't buy pepper seeds. I have had better germination from seeds I saved from peppers bought at the grocery store! After a couple years of testing, I have been able to grow a few veggies from scraps either store bought, or my own. I also buy the sprout or microgreen packets of seeds for things like radishes, chard, lettuce ect. A lot more seeds for usually about a buck more.

When I grow beets the voles enjoy nibbling on the exposed top of the root. I mound dirt around the plant as they grow.

I grow San Marzano tomatoes and I jar enough sauce to last from harvest to mid-summer. I know you can buy garlic cheap in stores but I do like growing my own, I find it tastes better and lasts longer than the mini-packs from China. I grow strawberries too, sometimes the yield is hit or miss and I know I can go to the "pick your own" patch just near my home and buy plenty more, but oh the pleasure of going out into my backyard and picking a ripe strawberry warmed by the sun and just popping it into my mouth..🤤

I feel onions should of been on this list. They are easy to grow and store well. I haven't bought store onions in years! In my area south of Montreal, everyone has a hard time with cucumber beetle and powedry mildew. So they are not input free here (but I have found an incredibly mildew resistant zuchininat west coast seed: desert squash! Must have!)

I planted two spaghetti squash this last summer. One produced 16 and the other produced 32. I also had a butternut squash plant that produced 50 squash... off of one plant. It was ridiculous. I ended up with 760 lbs of squash. It is amazing what one squash seed can end up producing!

I loved this video and agree with everything on your list! I would also add sugar snap peas, even though it's an early season crop. Also agree with others who suggested garlic and asparagus. Garlic is so easy and stores all year until the next harvest. Asparagus is an investment in time and space, but so low maintenance.

Ima be bold. Container fig trees. 10 of them unripe ones at the store are like 15$... a 2yr old tree properly trained can give you 70-100 fruits depending on the variety each year. Might not be that good in zones like 3 or 4. Even a 1yr tree can give you 20-30 fruits. And the containers can be small. Im talking 3-5 gal nursery pots

I live in Canada, Zone 5 and we can grow a ton of food with the exception of tropical fruits, veggies. I stopped buying pineapples, kiwis, avocadoes (that was a hard one), bananas etc. a long time ago.

Great video. I used to grow peppers, tomatoes and cucumbers on my balcony in Miami. Peppers are the most prolific and easiest to grow. They love to be left alone and will even continue to produce with dry soil. I planted them from veg purchased at a farmer's mkt. I had enough harvest to supply friends and neighbors.

I have Jalapenos, Hungarian Hot Wax and Cayenne started indoors. Green beans fresh off the bush are better than candy regardless of economics. Peppers seem to do very well in grow bags.

These all are part of my garden as well every year! Especially every other year to do salsa the other year to do pasta sauce. The taste of garden veggies surpass any flavors from the store😋 as for squash, last year I planted 5 plants and the rest were all volunteer squash plants. To say I had an abundance is an understatement! I love gardening!

Only hybrid I grow in my garden is Sungold tomato, developed in Japan... it is an exquisite all around winner .... I would add Tomatillos....they add mountains to make terrific spaghetti sauce, just ask the Mexican chefs, and add to acid in tomato sauce canning....Only other thing I can add to this great video is Kale- several cold weather varieties supply you much to the end of season , and all will go into the beginnings of winter... I clone Sungolds and clip them back continuously over winter to develop hardy roots, in a grow tent with grow lights, with objective of strong roots for spring development.. Do not use soil, to avoid pests- Cocunut choir or moss...No soil!.......Thanks Ashley for your continuous learning and help to us!!!!

I have about 25 feet of trellis in my garden, and last year I planted it all in Kentucky Wonder pole beans. I froze about 15 lbs and gave away that much more. My jalapeños have been very productive, and I pickle them like you do. I want to learn to make hot sauce but haven’t gotten around to it. I’ve had decent luck with cucumbers- especially Beit Alpha. I’m down in the Florida Panhandle and the disease and pest pressure is very difficult to deal with. Cucumbers get several wilt and fungus issues due to the rain. The spring is our rainy season and it’s not unusual to get 20 inches of rain in a week. We average about 60 inches a year but most of it comes in the spring and summer - not to mention hurricanes and tropical storms that damage and blow over your crops. I tried corn one year and had beautiful tall stalks until we had a storm and they were all flattened. Oh well! Nothing discourages me. I love gardening and just adapt and deal with it. Yes, tomatoes and zucchini just keep on giving. One plant and you’ll get pounds of produce! I’ve never had good yields with peppers, though. Will try the container method this year.

Tiana butternut squash so good. I buy my seeds from wast coast seeds. Tiana squash is very low in disease so easy to grow much smaller then regular butternut squash But so easy to keep in the winter and so dark in color and tasty . Could easily use in place of pumpkin in pie. TIANA butternut squash. This year we are growing more reset vegetables for sure potatoes rutabaga turnip carets those big white radishes off coarse garlic is in leaks peppers tomatoes some cucumbers ………

When I gardens in other places, tomatoes and cucumbers when absolutely nuts, consequently both have made it in to every garden I've ever had. Where I am now however, I have really had difficulties. Last year I managed to get the tomatoes to produce really really well. Last year was also the best with cucumbers, but I still only got maybe a dozen off of about 8 plants. I've tried: in ground, 5 gallon buckets, raised beds & grow bags. Last year tomatoes were in raised beds & grow bags. Cucumbers were in buckets, but previously have been in raised beds. Previous years I added mushroom compost. I didn't know that I had to fertilize in both raised beds & containers, so last year I used compost about a month before planting & then fertilized monthly with Gaia Green (maybe why tomatoes did so much better). I'm looking for cheaper organic ways to fertilize & wondering what's up with the cukes. Because I live in a city with a huge rodent problem, they don't want us to compost, so I purchased from a local farm.

I have grown Mountain half runners for years. Grow them on my fence and they are prolific. I love the flavor of the rattlesnake beans and will probably grow mostly those next year although the harvest isn't as good. I have not had good luck with carrots. I will be concentrating on cherry tomatoes. I use them fresh and they dehydrate well and I can preserve them as sundried tomatoes for later.

Thinking maybe your grocery stores and garden centres sell some vegetables and seedling plants cheaper than what we have to pay in SW Ontario. Green Bell Peppers got to be $2.50 to $3.00 each right now, and a 4-cell pack of seedling plants at some garden centres last year were approaching $6.00. Our rhubarb patch has got to be 70+ years old (my late Grandmother or Grandfather planted it). Carrots struggle in our clay, but beets grow well.🤷‍♂️ I WISH I had soil like what I have seen in your videos!!🙏

Finally succeeded in growing pumpkins, all kinds, zucchini. Still have butternut squash and we have been eating a lot of them. Snow peas by the bowl. Knock on wood that last year wasn't a fluke and I go back to my sad looking garden of yesteryear. The only difference is I picked up a few free rounds of hay and put that down to cut down on weeding. Hmmm was that did it?

The benefit of pepper plants is they are perennial. If you can overwinter them, the same plant will produce again next year.

I have had quite good results growing yellow bush beans. (YUM!) However, I cannot for the life of me figure out why I can't get beets or radishes (!!) to grow, no matter how light and fluffy the soil is!! They just push themselves UP out of the dirt and fall over. I've tried in containers, grow bags, raised beds, and the main garden - same results. Carrots have given me mixed success, but haven't failed me completely. Potatoes and garlic have done REALLY well! Thanks for the video, Ashley!! ❤

@@GardeningInCanada No, not at all. I thought the VegePod I bought would be perfect for radishes and beets, but even using premium herb & veg potting soil, they just commit suicide! LOL Carrots did okay, though. I'm going to try a different strain of beets (and radish) this year and see what happens. Oh, and I discovered a hybrid strain of tomato that's the best of all worlds - the Bellatrix. Similar to an Amish Paste, but disease resistant, determinate, and extremely productive. Great for fresh eating or preserving! Thanks for your reply!

I have no luck with beets or radishes either, they’re all leaf, no root. As for carrots, I finally got mine to germinate last year, then something ate them in the ground. 😢 I have mesh fences around my garden, but it only keeps the rabbits out. All the hawks, falcons, and eagles we have around here need to do a better job! 😂

I've tried for 2 years, multiple sowings, to grow beets, but most did not give me anything other than a pencil-lead-sized root. The biggest roots I did get were no bigger than ping pong balls, no matter how long I let them grow. What's the trick to getting big, luscious beetroots?

Hi Ashley, this is a great video for beginners as well as all of us gardeners. I would only caution about Bush Delicata squash, it's storage time isn't great. It is delish, and well worth growing however. Blue Hubbard and all the rest of the ones you mentioned are really worth the effort too, my hubbard is still out in the barn and it's still perfect. After the lovely Arctic Blast your northerners sent us a few weeks ago, I'm very ready for Spring to come and right now I'm heating up my germination mix on my heat mat, ready to sow some things tomorrow. I grow Blue Hubbards every year and, yes, they will at least 9 months on my basement. I love them but I’ve heard people in the south say they have a hard time with them due to pests and disease.

Do you have any videos on how to get rid of grass ?? I plant at a community garden and there’s lots of sections of my plot is always full of grass as it used to be a field. I do till it each year. But any suggestions to control the grass would be amazing !!

Is it Couch grass as opposed to just regular grass? It spreads with rhizomes so if you till it, you just spread it around and make it all worse. What I do is gently gently lift it up and tease the runners out of the ground. Oftentimes they are over a meter long. If it's actually grass, cardboard it over and add four to six inches of topsoil. You can plant into the topsoil.

@@gabriellakadarthank you! I believe actual grass but you might be on to something about the tilling. Everyone who tills has grass everyone who doesn’t, doesn’t have as much. But I will for sure use the cardboard method. Going to also try edging around sections so it’s easy to keep the weeds out as well. Lots of prep work to be done !

How long should a humidity dome ( plastic cover ) be placed on seeds? I hear seedlings need high humidity to grow faster .

I take off the dome after the seeds have germinated. Too much humidity the seedlings could be prone to damping off.

Grew paty pans last year. I left them too long. Unfortionately they grew to the size of saucers and the skins were very tough so im sticking to the regular zucchini this year. Does any one know if you can save seeds from the packets sold at the grocery stores like Burpees? Thanks

It depends if the seeds are heirlooms seeds or not. You can’t save from hybrid seeds only from heirloom or open pollinated seeds.

Had an amazing year of many kinds of peppers, tomatoes, pumpkin, squash and celery. I canned, froze, dehydrated and freeze dried. I just had the pleasure of giving over a 100 pounds of squash and pumpkin to our local Food Share. They were so happy to get the haul just after the new year when donations are down. I asked if they would take my extras next year and they said they would definitely take extra to share within our community.

The only things on this list I’ve harvested successfully are tomatoes and beans, with limited success with peppers. I had tons of huge zucchini plants last year, but only a few actual zucchini. Even my winter squash and cucumbers only give me 1 or 2 fruit each.

Last summer I tried growing cucumbers. Unfortunately, cucumber beetles completely destroyed my plants. I used neem oil spray but it didn't help. Any suggestion for treatment with natural solution?

Same. What I've found is the round Lemon Cucumbers are most resistant to the bacterial wilt. They branch and for some reason, the disease doesn't spread to all of the vines. Lemon Cucumbers are a bit different but they have really good cucumber flavour and never bitter.

Plant onions, marigolds, radishes broccoli, or other plants near your cucumbers. I always plant marigolds in my garden to deter insect pests as well as deer.

@@reginafetty6374 When the cucumber beetles arrive like the Mongol hords of Genghis Khan, there's not all the much a person can do except row cover or copper sulphate. People who grow cukes in a backyard garden in an area where nobody else is growing them are usually fine. But at an allotment garden with several hundred plots, it's very difficult. I have tried low cucurbitacin cukes that don't need pollination. Eventually they outgrow the row cover and once out in the open, the beetles find them anyway. I will try to let them grow on the ground this year instead of letting them vine up a trellis. Keep the insect netting on indefinitely and see what happens. Allotment gardens are different because pest pressures can be enormous.

Soapy water, hand-picking the beetles off, and checking twice a day for clutches of eggs. It's tough!

Grow leaf lettuce , dozens of varieties, all much better tasting and more nutritious than head lettuce .

I grow Redbor Kale. It's ornamental and tasty. I also tried Dinosaur and dwarf kale. The dwarf kale was good.

I really like beets. Every year,the flea beetles destroy my beets.🙇🏻‍♂️🫤 those little criminals are my sadness.
