Decathlon have been producing some good quality stuff at really good prices for years. But the label snobs still didn't bite when it was Decathlon or B'TWIN, Triban logo'd up. But with some marketing looks like its changing, so that's good.

Ekoï AR14, as ridden by Cofidis, Lotto Destiny, IPT, is only 200g in S size. Super light and aero, and can be found on sale for the same price as the Van Rysel. Slay the grammes on your head, your neck will be happy !

@arthligАй бұрын
Don't. It's simply too heavy and honestly not that great. I bought into the moderate hype caused by the low price and promised aero gains, but something was off from the moment I put it on and it only struck me after a longer ride when my neck basically gave up. It's 110g heavier than my previous helmet. May not seems like a lot, but my neck muscles just weren't able to deal with it right away and i wasn't too keen on trying to adapt. Returned it after a few rides

If you want a non-mushroom helmet, check out that EKOI helmet that Victor Campernarts wears in this year's TDF. (particularly the stage he won as that's the one I noticed) - his helmet looks VERY. VERY small. Like significantly less total volume than the other helmets. I think the model might be the AR14. Not sure about their pricing because on their website for France location the MSRP is 170 euros but now it's on sale for 84 euros
@Antoine_FrsАй бұрын
According to Josh from Silca, some pros size down their helmets to reduce their frontal area. Maybe Ekoï have a slim shape, but maybe Victor worn a smaller helmet as part of his setup specially tuned for that stage. Something to investigate 🧐
@mikemelbrooksАй бұрын
I thought Victors helmet looked very small. I know some pros used to carve out the padding on small helmets to get them to fit.

I chose a white Met helmet after noticing two riders ahead of me on the road. The white helmet was much more visible than the black helmet of the other rider. I figured if I could see the white helmet more easily, a car driver would too.
@PloCnikАй бұрын
That's what I keep telling my friends. You're invisible in black and head is a really important part of the thermoregulation system and it SHOWS in direct sunshine. Bright helmets all day every day.

That'a actually not too bad. Over in my country only the black version is available from Decathlon. Might be a good candidate to replace my much-loved 2016 Lazer Tonic. I do like the matte white version you got though.

The aero one tested really well for aero. Enough to make me want one, but there isn’t a USA CPSC version. So I can’t because there is a threat sometimes they check labels at races.

I used to wear a cap for the same reason but last year decided to go with sunscreen (another option to get rid of the cap was to get an aero helmet but... no). And with sunscreen on bald head there's another catch - even proper sport cream will gel on your face and eyes (especially when it's hot). But, I found SolRX active zinc face stick - it stays where you put it and protects skin well. I'm using it this summer and so far so good.

If you want a non mushroom helmet, the best i found (since i myself suffer from this too) is the Abus Airbreaker !
@chriscarol4965Ай бұрын
Good test/comparison! And yes a cap is a must. Not only because of sunscreen, but because of sweat! My (soaking wet) cap goes into the washer along with the rest of the kit after the ride. Don’t want to know, how a helmet inner lining - that you unfortunately cannot wash - must smell after some weeks without a cap……
@OYeahanАй бұрын
What do you mean "can't wash inner lining"? Virtually all helmets have inner lining attached via velcro for easy removal and (preferably hand-) washing. I got this helmet and hand washed the lining with some liquid soap, and sprayed helmet with dish soap and liquid soap solution, washed it (especially straps) and rinsed and no damage yet. The lining usually is designed to catch the sweat attacking your eyes as well, but when it gets saturated e.g. in humid weather of course it doesn't work anymore. Never tried caps though, today I got some sweat on my glasses when I began descending straight after ascent so maybe a cap would help with that, hmm. Need to find some ultra thin one. But I guess sweat will still soak through to lining.
@chriscarol4965Ай бұрын
@@OYeahan the inner lining my helmets are glued to the helmet (or the MIPS System) don’t have anything velcroed, that can be taken off and washed. Therefor I take a thin cap underneath.
@OYeahanАй бұрын
@@chriscarol4965 well I guess you can still wash it with some mild soap and water from time to time. If water was to damage helmets you'd need to throw them off after getting caught in a rain :D. But this helmet uses "AIR MIPS" so there are no extra components, it is part of the liner.
@slayerofgramsАй бұрын
Mix sweat and sunscreen and you have the most potent eye-poison in the world hehe. But as you say, there are many reasons to wear a cap for us with a polished dome that people with hair just don't get :)
@OYeahanАй бұрын
@@slayerofgrams sure, I would guess so. Chris never mentioned that he needs a cap to protect his skin from sunlight. I was surprised that there are helmets without removable liners :O. For me it is absolutely basic feature.

I own the black version for couple of months already... The downside is that there is no secure way to stash cycling glasses on the front side of the helmet during the ride... There is a more secure fit on the back side though...
@bengt_axleАй бұрын
The strap going from the ear to behind the head usually is anchored to the foam shell with a plastic loop holder sitting in the back. Have you tried pulling on this piece and then pulling on the straps to shorten them? This might give you the adjustment you're looking for.

I wish someone made a true weight weenie, mips helmet with ventilation as the other goal. I'll give up 10w of aerodynamic drag for a 200g helmet for hot days

Re: Protecting your scalp because of mega testosterone levels - I haven't quite gotten there yet, but I'm on the way, and I was searching for a new helmet protect me from the sun. Aero helmets would work but are too hot. In the end I got a Kask Protone. It fully covers the crown of your head, and while it has good ventilation, the vents are angled in such a way that not much direct sunlight gets in. I used to have to wear a cap with my Giro Synthe, but so far this summer the Protone alone is doing the job.
