Where I'm from you either always split the bill or do a "I'll get this one, you pay the next one" if the date goes well and you're agreeing to meet again. The first time I came across the "men should pay for dates" idea was in the USA, since my country doesn't do that. There are lots of things that seem much more prevalent in parts of the US than where I'm from (like people openly talking about being sugar babies or OF models, unfortunately my country is very sex negative so I learned about sugar babies and sx work beyond classic ideas of prostitution in the states) - basically I just assumed oh this is one of those things that's very different over there. I mean even filming people in public to shame them etc. I've never seen other than in the US and England (obviously happens elsewhere but I've only witnessed it in those places). when I worked in the states I was SO excited to go to Cheesecake Factory, I had heard of it through American KZbin and was so thrilled to see it in real life. Free bread also like wtf!? Stunning! I sheepishly asked my boss if I could go buy a slice of cheesecake to take away on the way out because we didn't get cheesecake and it's The Thing (idk why I asked her when we weren't in work hours like I needed her permission lol, I was a young adult in a foreign country for the first time and trying to be respectful I guess). It was magical. I was also very excited about Target and when we went there were people fist fighting outside, a colourful experience to be sure. That place Bass Pro Shop nearly gave me an aneurysm I was not prepared in any way but I loved it, I know it's a bit of a meme to make fun of but I've never seen anything like it so I was overwhelmed. 10/10 had a wild time.
