I'm so glad you didn't mention Erewhon in Los Angeles. The prices are utterly outrageous, yet their "healthy" prepared food is absolutely awful. It's good for finding specific items that are hard to get elsewhere like unpasteurized cow and goat milk.
@amusingaida3 ай бұрын
I don't know that one. At the risk of sounding, er, European (!) one thing I am very happy about is the price-quality ratio in European supermarkets. It was curious to see how high the prices were in the US for comparable items.

Aida, I will be in Paris in October and would like to get some pointers from you about where to shop for clothes besides the big malls, please!
@amusingaida Жыл бұрын
Ha! A good question. My calls quickly would be Kiliwatch, Rue Vieille du Temple (above rue de la Perle) and the streets parallel (rue de Saintonge and rue de Charlot), boulevard Beaumarchais (between metro stations Filles du Calvaire and Chemin Vert), the very bottom section of rue de Charonne. All that for chic but urban wear, which I like. For more 'classic' wear you could try the streets in the triangle made by rue de Sèvres, boulevard St-Germain and boulevard Raspail, or Avenue Mozart. But don't rule out entirely the department stores, which have a great range: my favorites are Le Bon Marché and Printemps.

If you buy some meat, cheese, bread, is there a place to sit down and eat it? We are in a hotel. thx, Jane
@amusingaida2 ай бұрын
Absolutely. But I recommend taking that outside the hotel to eat! Seriously though, the city is kind enough to put parks and benches everywhere. Wherever your hotel is, look for the nearest park, or the nearest church (there are often benches out the front), or head towards the river. Many boulevards have benches too.

@amusingaida Жыл бұрын
Il y a une segmentation du marché des supermarchés, c'est évident. Ce que je trouve génial de la Grande Epicerie est que c'est un endroit un peu ludique en plus qu'une collection de rayons d'alimentation.
@yvonneb2 Жыл бұрын
As a New Yorker, I can tell you that Food Emporium is not a good supermarket. Really ugly. And Dean & Deluca is a small, overpriced place. European supermarkets are so much better.😍
@amusingaida Жыл бұрын
You may say that but I couldn't possibly comment. (I've only visited NYC, so the little I've seen suggests to me you're right, but I don't have enough in-depth experience to compare in detail). In the end though: better that they exist than if they didn't, right? (And I'm very happy with my French supermarkets!)
@tommoncrieff1154 Жыл бұрын
I love your videos, they are exquisite. But - yes there’s a ‘but’ - theres a throwaway line in this one - ‘sorry Harrod’s’ - I assume you are suggesting U.K. pays more for EU foods since Brexit, but that’s not true. U.K. has a free trade deal with the EU and there are zero tariffs and quotas on trade, it’s the same as before.
@amusingaida Жыл бұрын
Hi Tom and thanks for the compliment on my videos. Much appreciated -- the feedback is really precious. On Harrod's and Brexit: I know Brexit is still a topic for debate in the UK. And you're right about EU-made products being covered by the free trade provisions in the TCA. But my reading of British press suggests that it's the bureaucratic frictions around SPS that are forming a problem in the agro-alimentaire sector. While UK import checks are partly suspended, EU truck drivers are hesitant to go back and forth when that paperwork might slow them down and cost money. So that indirect cost is one factor pushing food inflation higher in the UK. Am I wrong?
@tommoncrieff1154 Жыл бұрын
@@amusingaida I don’t know. I think that was only in the first few weeks (excluding Northern Ireland, where there are continuing issues) but I don’t know. I doubt any of that affects Harrods or Fortnums or London luxury shopping! I was just in Paris for a week and did little food shopping, except for Earl Grey tea 😆. I didn’t notice the prices in restaurants were different from UK, so I looked up Eurostat and was surprised to see the U.K. is 26% cheaper than France for food shopping, which is an enormous difference. I guess this is because farmers are more powerful in France whereas supermarkets are all powerful in England. I split my time between England and California and food shopping is MUCH more expensive in USA. Supermarket food is at least 2.5 times the price of the U.K. and California closer to 4 times for many essentials 🙀. And outside of NYC, San Fran etc. the range and quality is usually not good!
