What were you thinking Kenny???chickens like dry dark , wind free places to lay there eggs...black plastic and staples quick fix and put some golf balls in there to get them to lay there....problem solved..

What is interesting to me is how each homestead makes it work. It's all different but I love seeing EVERYTHING; from the shop to the garden to the kitchen, to construction, to running errands, to the farm animals., to the bedroom (JK) :) I love how organized your shop is!

Try chicken wire under the roosts, over the deep bedding material, stapled to the wooden frame. You might need to give it a scrape every once in a while but the wire might be just a temporary need.

Hi Kenny, we would love to see a video update on your shop. My next few projects are to build my greenhouse using reclaimed wood and building a wash station using an old double stainless steel sink that someone was giving away after remodeling their kitchen.

Close in the back of your nest boxes outside to create darkness inside.
@nancystewart20633 жыл бұрын
I have found that I leave my chickens penned up until at least noon before I let them out of their run. You might try putting a piece of black fabric over the open front of the nest boxes and have a slash in it so they can get in easily will give them a dark place to lay. Put a fake egg in each box so that when they check it out they know they should lay there. And close the door to the roost after they come out of the roost so they have to use the boxes.

hens love darker places. They recognize the material that you add in the nesting box as place to lay eggs... so all dark places with the same material inside would be a place to lay eggs.

If a chicken lays an egg in a spot, it's an invitation to other chickens to lay in the same place. Remove the eggs as soon as possible and add fake eggs or golf balls to the nest where you want them to lay. You could even leave a couple of eggs in the nest if you mark them with pencil or crayon (no ink) and switch them out the next day so you can still eat them.

I'd love a full tour of the shop! My chickens all want to lay in the same box. It might be a different box each day, but wherever one starts, they pile in on top, its ridiculous. I have four boxes for 14 hens, but they climb all over each other and squak about it trying to use the same one.
@pigvalve98853 жыл бұрын
Your roost is more enclosed than the laying boxes take down the walls around the roost so they dont feel secure laying under the roost.

your video answers your question.. Look how dark it is in the litter look how light it it is in the laying boxes.....chickens dont want to be seen when laying. maybe a layer of hog wire under the roost so they cant get down to the litter

Could you make a frame with chicken wire to attach behind the roost so the chickens are kept out but still let the droppings through?

Take the Bedding out of the Poop shelf. I know its nuts but it looks very similar. I bet it will stop with no pine shavings in it.

What if you put straw in the nesting boxes instead of pine shavings ? They might associate pine shavings with nesting box . So if you put straw in the nesting boxes their habit might change.

Not dark enough! And need straw. The poop area could be covered in 1/2inch wire poop will fall through.

It's too bright! I staple gunned old jeans to make curtains to dark out the nesting boxes. I use astro turf for bedding, instead of shavings. That way, it can be pulled out to clean easily. Also cuts down on having to buy shaving. And where are your dummy eggs, Kenny?
