As a man I had a similar reaction. For reasons not related to my gender, I have extreme difficulty with the phrase. This song expresses it in such a beautiful way...

Exactly what the other two commenters have said. I've never heard the phrase "calm down" or "breathe" in such a way that is comforting and loving, and from a stranger, no less. This song hits in a way I didn't think was possible. Thank you for putting my feelings into words much better and more eloquently than I could have hoped to.

Julianna and Violet are Emily's daughters. Katie, Eva, and Harper are Martie's daughters. The others are probably nieces or friends. So it's an advice/wisdom song dedicated to their daughters about how to handle heartbreak, obviously gleaned from their own experience. Beautiful concept!

I love this, but it's a little heartbreaking too--I'm probably thinking way too much into this, but... they did their rendition of Godspeed in 2002 for Nat's son, before the concert that was thankfully not their end in 2003. It was pretty much radio silence from our beloved Chicks, and then they came back better than ever with this not sorry, fck you, too attitude that I admire them for. Yeah they lost a lot of fans for that, but they gained quite a lot, as well. But, when you look back at Godspeed in 2002, it's so sweet and hopeful. These 18 years in between seem to have greatly changed that outlook, like they need to outfit their girls more for the cutting, cruel edges of the world. They can't look for the dragons and pirates, and the sky isn't a vast ocean. Yes, Zach was much younger than the girls, but isn't the contrast a little sobering?

Clare You are right. The difference between lyrics and poetry is structure of poetry. To me there are many songs that are poetry or as M. Chapin Carpenter in her songs, dashboard poetry. Her music is definitely poetry, to me. And I hear it in the two songs the Chicks have released. A depth of growth and maturity.

Y’all nailed it! Which isn’t a surprise 😉. Love the instrumental build up. My mom told me that she’d heard that this song was supposed to be sad but I don’t think it is. I think that it’s really empowering actually, like it’s the Chicks saying “Don’t worry, this situation fucking sucks and a lot of hurt is about to come your way but every part of your life is temporary and one day this feeling you have will be over, and yeah, it’s the actual worst and I know how that feels, but if you act confident and take it as it is and push through it, your life will be better for it.” At least that’s what I got out of it. I really liked the story in this song and the message. It almost lets you build your own imaginary circumstances for the people they’re singing to. And the genre blend was really cool!!! Great job! 💖⚡️
