Had Barnes played, he might have stayed through 2000. Consider that Gannon left after the 1998 season for Oakland. The backups for Elvis Grbac in 1999 and 2000 were second-string QB Warren Moon and third-string QB Todd Collins. Carl would have only gone after one of those two veterans if Barnes had followed the Chiefs orders to go to NFL Europe and play.

Pat Barnes was a backup quarterback with the Calgary Stampeders in 2001, and won a Grey Cup ring despite seeing almost no action. He moved on to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 2002 and again saw limited action over the next two years, but was given the starting assignment in the last game of the 2003 season because starter Khari Jones had a high-ankle sprain and hadn't practiced in two weeks. On the third play of the game, Barnes threw his first pass, which was intercepted and returned for a touchdown. Barnes suffered a serious, and career-ending knee injury on the play. Jones was forced to come off the sidelines, and in an incredibly gutsy performance, produced over 440 yards of offense in leading the Blue Bombers to a 34-30 win over the eventual Grey Cup champion Edmonton Eskimos.

In the pre-Andy Reid Era, the Chiefs usually went the veteran QB route via trade or free agency to solve their starting QB search, which came in the form of Steve Deberg, Dave Krieg, Joe Montana, Steve Bono, Rich Gannon, Elvis Grbac, Trent Green, and Matt Cassel.

@@DolFan316 So, during People’s Sexiest Man Alive issue in I think 1998, they did a section for Sexiest athlete. During the editorial meeting to decide who it would be, someone mentioned that KCs QB was very good looking. So without knowing the name of the QB, they ran with it. There was only one problem: The QB the person was thinking of was Rich Gannon who had been playing while Grbac was hurt. But since they didn’t know his name, they just told KC that their QB was chosen sexiest athlete. So KC sent Grbac to do the feature. People magazine realized their mistake once they saw Grbac. But they decided to run with it anyway. Which is the story of how Elvis Grbac was once named Sexiest Athlete Alive. It was a total mistake, but they went along with it

Several things - That 1997 NFL Draft at QB had 3 QBs that Bill Walsh was asked to look at by the San Francisco 49ers. He looked at Jake Plummer , Jim Drunkenmiller and Pat Barnes. Of all 3 he recommended Plummer , but said Barnes was the next one he'd take if he was gone. The 49ers missed so massively they disregarded Walsh's recommendation and drafted Drunkenmiller. KC after the Todd Blackledge failure would not draft a 1st rd QB in the 1st rd until Pat Mahomes. Their biggest QB bust after it was likely 2 other QB's in that span. A 2nd rd pick on Matt "Werewolves of" Blundin in 1991 or 1992. Then in 2000s they drafted Brodie Croyle in the 3rd rd. KC came close to drafting 2 QBs in that span in the 1st rd before Mahomes. In the 2007 draft KC was looking possibly at drafting QBs in the 1st rd ...had they fallen to them. One was Brady Quinn (they later signed him and he sucked) and Matt Ryan (if Atlanta didn't draft him as expected) . But the Chiefs would go on to keep that over 30 year streak of no 1st rd QBs going. But in all this I'd say Blundin was the Chiefs biggest QB bust after Blackledge. He was drafted high in the 2nd rd and at that point KC had Steve DeBerg or Dave Krieg as a starter.

Barnes forgot that he needed reps. People such as Kurt Warner, Jake Delhomme, Adam Vinatieri, James Harrison and others wouldn't be the stars they became without getting reps in NFL Europe. The Chiefs had Barnes sent there for a reason. No wonder he didn't make it to the Chiefs' final cuts.

He was decent qb. In NFL Europe. In hindsight the 97 qb draft class was weak. Would the Chiefs won a playoff game in the 90s had they played Rich Gannon instead Bono/Grbac?
@DolFan3165 ай бұрын
It wasn't hindsight. Jim Dru(n)kenmiller was the first QB taken...at 26. He was seen as a project player who the 49ers took because he was big. Jake Plummer was seen as a player who could be good but nobody at the time was getting all hot n' bothered over guys like Danny Wuerffel, Tony Graziani, Koy Detmer, etc. That's why Plummer was the only other QB in that draft to be taken before the 4th round.

Kansas City offense in the 1990s: Run, Run, Pass, Punt. Martyball. They were better off with the defense on the field. Not really hard to pick up that offense. KC -- after the Blackledge debacle -- never picked a QB high in the draft until Mahomes. Barnes was never meant to be a starter.
