This makes me so sad. Sad that people had to live this way and feel so ashamed. Props to Miss Lillian for bringing this to light at a time when no one wanted to talk about it.

The movie initially was banned from public showing in New York because of laws banning such a subject as indecent. It was a better time.

I believe that any of the actors in this movie were gutsy for staring in this. It could have ruined their careers at the time it was made. It took courage.

the final scene where Karen is walking out of Martha's funeral you can see this longing look on her face and I think then she did realize that she loved her back but i guess well never know

@@yourmommmmm264 you know, I'm not a fan of remakes, but I would love a remake of this film. One where the actresses can actually explore more.

I saw this tonight on TCM...the whole second half of this movie and the agony of the main characters is gut-wrenching... Kudos to Audrey Hepburn and Shirley MacLaine for bravura performances. And with "Splendor in the grass" as the movie shown immediately before it, it's been a tough night emotionally.

@JocelynPadilla25 Although the film itself was made in 1961, the play it was based on was written in 1934, when any mention of homosexuality on stage was illegal in New York and the actors in a similar play had been arrested only a few years before. So even if, in the 60s Martha may have fought for her love (some did, but just as many didn't, if not more), in 1934 the social climate was very different, and disgust was (in some cases - still is) a very normal emotion regarding this sort of thing.

Beeing gay myself this is a very hard scene to watch. Feeling disgusted because you love someone. And who wouldn't love Audrey Hepburn? The only good thing about the love in this movie is at that end. When Shirley died, Audrey walks away from the towns people who were disgusted because of them, with her head held high, nothing looking at anyone. That was good.

Come people be truthful to yourselves. People were more open at that time and in our ancestor were most open too. Now, it sucks because people have to involve politics and make look homosexuals like we are sick people but we are human beings who have the same rights like heterosexuals who are worst than us by cheating her wives and husbands.
