Shiro, the fourth son, with 4 in his name. 4 is the number of death in japan because it can be pronounced like the word for death.

Also, Shiro means White which is the colour of death. Shrouds, snow, spooky ghosts and fog.

The fact that all members of Unit 731 were granted immunity for their crimes against humanity and their war crimes is outright enraging. A most grave insult to justice and basic human decency.

Your moral outrage is meaningless. Save it for similar things happening _today._ Oh but that would take work, wouldn't it? Let's just say Japanese ultranationalism is alive and well. For instance, in Anime.

Worst part is, they regularly had fucking group reunions after the war. Just a bunch of war criminals openly getting together to reminisce about their war crimes. Absolutely insane.

The movie discussion just gave me a ptsd flashback about my time in retail. Guy came in looking for a dvd of White House Down on the day that Olypus Has Fallen was released on DVD. White House Down wouldn't come out for a few months later. Threatened to punch me in the face when I explained that they have similar premises and maybe he just got the release dates mixed up.

I have seen both films and out of the two, white house down is better because it doesn't take itself as seriously. As for The Last Samurai, culturally speaking it's a lot less offensive when you realize that Tom Cruise is not who the title refers to. Historical accuracy wise it conflates a bunch of people and conflicts and glosses over a bunch of stuff but more or less falls in line with how Japan likes to remember that period so I imagine that's part of why it has it's fans. I did a term paper on Unit 731 and how it reflected the Japanese ideology of technological development as outlined in Rich Nation Strong Army by Richard J. Samuels. The research was incredible rough and cost me the ability to sleep some nights, on the plus side my professor mentioned it to the author of the book and he was apparently horrified and intrigued.

the fact that Japan came out of centuries of self-imposed isolation into a fast-track, centralized modernization process (especially in regards to military tech and state power) definitely contributed to their expansion, to the point where they started winning wars against Western powers and making waves in Great Power diplomacy (which raised eyebrows amongst people who thought Europe/The West was insurmountably superior to any Asian state until the Russo-Japanese War). Also one of the big reasons the League of Nations didn't work out was that the US didn't actually join it even though Wilson was the architect of the whole idea (that and they had no real enforcement abilities) sorry, this episode's already activated the two history degrees part of my brain lol

Just going to remind people that (as I'm sure is going to come up as this story unfolds, especially towards the end when Ishii cuts his deal) the US had its own biological weapons program from 1943 to the late 60s-early 70s. Japan wasn't an anomaly in regards to this stuff at the time

It's still going on. And it's not a secret. My biomedical sciences professor visited a former student after said student moved to the US to work on biochemical warfare research for the American government. The prof had to go through a major background check, it took at least a year if I remember correctly. Apparently, he could never go back, because the monkeys they were experimenting on had facial way too similar to people. Those are memory I wouldn't want either.

As prior military I can confirm we do indeed have to go into a gas chamber where release tear gas into a room. We have our masks on as the gas is released, we remove our masks and must take 1 large inhale of the gas, then after we feel the effects we put our masks back on. It was unpleasant to say the least.

👋🏼Suggestion for future rotten popcorn viewing. Communion from 1989 with Christopher Walken. It's about author Whitley Strieber's alleged real life "abduction encounter". It's weird, it's crazy, it's bad, it has Chris Walken hamming it up! It has it all!🍿

It might just be his American-ness. "First name/Last name" So self-centric the term becomes meaningless. Instead of the international "Given name/family name."

People tend to forget how xenophobic a LOT of Asian countries are. As for the rise in that well we have the ex cheeto-in-chief to thank for that, and people are getting desperate because of late stage capitalism mixing with fascism's/theocracy last gasp (look no futher than the DI's Wedge Strategy Document)

25 mins in, It's not that "and then they put on the mask" it's, you have 15 sec to get your gear on, and whether you did it in time the gas comes. It's to make the slow take it seriously and speed up in a safe controlled environment.
