When I realized there was a Chinese Dub for Black Myth Wukong available, I knew I had to listen to it! This adds SO much to the immersion of the game that it really makes the whole experience stand out!

Same. I started with Chinese, but had trouble reading the subtitles. White on white with only minor back-shadow is nearly impossible for my old eyes. Thankfully the English dub is just as good... so far. I'm in chapter 2. Struggling like a single parent with seven kids against this God damn wind Sage. I'm currently engaged in a certain side quest for a better weapon.

The tone is more pronounced in native language, even when you don't understand or read the subtitles. English dub is just bland because the tone is minimal or gone. Sounds like google talking, even in anime

JttW even though is its own mythology, it is not a religion nor does it have gods that its readers pray to. Rather, it is a fanfiction that contains the buddhist doctrine as its main theme, as do most other works of fiction that uses its native mythology and or other kinds, to make the work feel grandiose. A similar example of this can be used on Dracula as he was derived from an historical figure as it is for tripitaka, mystified to demonic proportions and require the Christian mythology as a means of defeating the vampire Just personally speaking as a chinese, i doubt that would be an adequate mythology to be incorporated as a legitimate pantheon to represent china

Thank you for putting this up! Brings back memories of watching Journey to the West. The CN dub just makes so much more sense. There's nuances that only CN can capture, especially in terms of the words used in the language, which is either hard translate over to EN, or entirely lost in translation. The EN dub does manage to capture some of that essence, but it's different man. This is why I like consuming media in its original audio dub when possible.

Totally agree. Any games in their original voices captures the emotions, mood and atmosphere the most. Dubs from other languages will always lose something. Reminds me of Stellar Blade, Korean voices were amazing, but English dub is hit or miss.

Yup, the original dub is so so much better: more natural, better syncing and most of all, immersive. Just like watching animes, I prefer native dub with English subtitles. It makes the story and character dialogues more sense and with better flow to it. Watching the English dub feels like how google translates mandarin to English, I couldn't make any sense of it.

They're tv/cinema voice actors who dub a lot of live action so it's a different approach and higher standard of quality and training than a lot of the Chinese dubs for anime style video games. I've heard Chinese voice acting (not dubbing) is much younger and less organized and respected than japanese ones, so it feels more amateur kinda like eng anime dubs

Probably story-gated like how Nier’s story only makes sense after the second and third playthroughs on why certain things occur. But kinda rare to see this type of story element telling outside of Nier series so agreed on the circlet randomness. Not to cause offense in any way here, but the game was originally voiced in Chinese. It’s English that is the Dub and any other languages there after. I advise have one play through in English and your second or third play through in the original Chinese. You can see the lip sync was meant for the Original Chinese language. Not that it matters, I find it awesome that they had talented Voice actors and actresses for multiple audiences; And it is awesome to see more games/developers become more confident to use more local languages. Anyway, I agree with you. The game is a masterpiece.

In the Chinese dub Wukong actually refers to Yang Jian as "little nephew", this is because Wukong has the self-styled title of "great sage equal to heaven" and considers himself equal to the Jade Emperor, and Jade Emperor is in fact Yang Jian's uncle. It's also lore accurate since in JttW Wukong would often insult other yaoguai by acting as their elder. When he fought the Black Bear for example he would insult him by calling him his son when Black Bear called for timeout for lunch.

No, it is dubbing because this is a videogame and the voice lines are not performed live by actors, but are recorded for fictional characters. Dubbing means "to record voice lines in a studio". It has nothing to do with language.

Did…did people just realize this? I always play games in their native language: I played Sekiro in Japanese, Wo Long in Chinese and this in Chinese. Any game that’s made by a non-Western dev I play in their language to see how the game is ACTUALLY meant to be presented to you (didn’t do it with Fromsoftware’s other games because they were set in like an European-ish setting). Any game is best in its native language setting. Which is why I always select default so I can see how the game is supposed to be presented to you.

While I think the English dub was commendable, it lacked some nuances and understanding of the character. While Sun Wukong is rebellious and mischievous, he shouldn't sound like a villain. I think they went a little too close to The Joker for my liking there.
