Dong Xiaobo has a rather expensive hobby. He raises 1,200 racing pigeons in the southern suburbs of Beijing. Dong's pigeons compete in many races and have won him several trophies. But like many pigeon enthusiasts in China, Dong doesn’t make money from his hobby. He's invested in 600,000 yuan (US$85,554) of his own money every year to raise and train his pigeons.

I rescue sick injured birds, many are piegons. They r treated as pest nowadays which is very unfair for these clever birds. Personally I don't agree with animal racing in any forms, however I hope these keepers can still look after their birds when they r sick, weak or unable to race.

The sound of pigeon whistle (a bamboo device tied to a pigeon's tail that makes a soothing sound in flight) is forever a part of my childhood memory in Beijing. So beautiful and calming it was when the birds circle around and the whistles change tunes as they maneuver. Nowadays it is more challenging for the birds to navigate their ways around taller and bigger buildings especially ones with glass curtainwalls.
