What surprises me the most is not the complexity of the riff and the speed, but the fact that he is singing while playing it!

This is why I love this channel! If I'm ever trying to learn a tricky bass part, Mark's got a video lesson breaking it down. Thank you, Mark!

Hi everyone. Hope you enjoy this riff breakdown. This is my second video on this riff after changing the way I play and teach the line. Note: I refer to the opening note as starting on the 'and' of 4. Yes, I know it's actually the 'a'. It's the final 16th of the bar. Stupid mistake. You can play along to the drum beat over at the website: www.talkingbass.net/chinese-way-level-42/

Thanks Mark for that tutorial . Had the pleasure of meeting my hero 1 to 1 in September last year. (He signed my Bass!) This was one of the questions I forgot to ask him as I was never sure if the bend/wobble was G or F sharp . Thanks for this. Best regards Robbie

Perfect Mark. This is such a fun song to play and as a matter of fact, I was playing it this morning - I used it to warm up my hands before I started my normal practice routine. Great lesson as always and thanks for the optional way of playing this.....I’ll be trying it out tomorrow!

Fantastic lesson Mark. One of many on your channel. Do you think you'll ever tackle the slap bass solo riff he also does live?

Hello Mark, have you taken the original lesson down? Think I preferred that one! Anyway thanks keep up the good work and can we have more 42 in the future?👍🎵🎸👏

I just can't get the two fingers on my finger picking hand to move fast enough and that's at the 119bpm version... It's a perennial problem. I think my bass playing might be doomed.
@Backtobassics5007 жыл бұрын
clowncollege90 I had this issue as well. Basically what I did was just come up with a fun, short, somewhat tricky rhythm and/or melody, if I didn't have something I needed to work on. When I did that, I picked out a goal BPM. I started a metronome off slowly, then worked up to it. That was just my way of working through the issue and it kind of made it like a game. I always loved playing strange rhythms, because most of what I played, when I played music, was straight 8th notes/rock lines with a few fills and mostly kept rhythm for the jazz band when I was in college (4 notes/bar due to sucking at jazz/never really liking it lol) It also helped me out with reading rhythms in sheet music while I was in school.

Best of luck. I hope you find what works for you.

I had the same issue when I started playing this song way back in the day . Use a pick for the rite hand and concentrate on the left hand then blend the rite hand in slowly then get rid of the pick and start using the fingers ! Trust me it works . The Mighty Mr King is so much faster than us norms can play

The lighter and less power you put into your plucking hand the faster your plucking will be. Totally counter intuitive as you think you need more power and tension to play fast, but the opposite is true. I used to play with a very heavy pluck. And i did that for years, until a couple of years ago when i was learning "hit me with your rythm stick" where i discovered the lighter and less tense i am with my plucking hand the fast my fingers moved. Mental!

What bass guitar are you playing? Brand and model.
@ryandoody26707 жыл бұрын
Donald Harris it's an ibanez SR series, not sure the exact model because his is older but the pickups are aftermarket, they normally come with large passive single coil pickups, the EQ is active.
