In her inaugural interview for Against the Tide Media, Host, Janira Reyes Clack sat down with actress, Vanessa Benavente to talk all things “The Chosen". Together, they discuss her background growing up in Peru (did you know she has an engineering degree?!), her favorite scenes, and how being a mother impacted her portrayal of the most well known mother in the world. It's interesting to hear her comments before they even got the scripts for Season 3. She was an integral part of Season 3, we're still in the process of absorbing the magnitude and excellence of the stories in every episode - epic!

Hi to Vanessa, she definitely did Mary justice in that episode where she left the group and rushed to tend to her exhausted Son, Jesus. I also felt the pain of Jesus when he arrived because nothing was hidden from him, he heard all the commotion that was happening among his desciples around that fire, it must have been hurtful to him to see the unforgiveness Simon had of Matthew considering that Jesus had not only CHOSEN them but had FORGIVEN them all of their past, but they were not seeing each other as Jesus sees them. It was too hurtful for Jesus to see that and no wonder he arrived in pain, too exhausted. As a parent it can be very exhausting to see your kids squabbling because you love them and you want them to also love each other.

This is interesting, because I have sometimes thought of the various actors that portray the characters in “The Chosen,” but I have never even imagined the character of Mary as having an actor. She’s just…Mary. To me, that’s a sign of excellent acting.

Many favorite parts of this interview! So enjoyable to get to know Vanessa. My favorite part was hearing her reactions to the campfire scene as one of her favorites on many personal levels as a mother, but also that "this scene represents what The Chosen is about. It's not about the showy stuff, the stuff we see all the time, but rather about human interactions, human needs and realities." That's how we feel, too.
