All those Fishy Stories about Jesus the Vegan Christ. By Dr. Chapman Chen Executive Summary: Instances of Jesus the Vegan Christ eating fish or helping His disciples to catch fish in the gospels are all products of either misinterpretation or later interpolation (cf. A refusal on His part to pay the tribute would be represented as disloyalty to the temple; while the payment of it would be taken as justifying their denial of Him as a prophet, for prophets were customarily exempted from the temple tax (cf. White 1898/2017:376-377). III. Jesus multiplied "five loaves and two fish" to feed the multitudes (Matthew 14:13-21, Mark 6:31-44, Luke 9:12-17, John 6:1-14)? However, Jesus therein broke and handed out loaves but not fish (Matthew 14). Moreover, the Greek word for fish (ἰχθύας), as in Mark 6:41, Matthew 14:19, and Luke 9:16, is an acronym for " Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior" (Akers 2000), a secret code commonly used by the early Christians to avoid persecution; and "fish (opsarion)", as in John 6:9, may also be a mistranslation of the Greek word for "fishweed (opson)" (Hicks 2019; Giron 2013), a popular vegan relish among Palestinian peasants both 2000 years ago and now. IV. By the time Jesus shared the Parable of the Net in Matthew 13, Simon Peter and the other disciples like his brother Andrew had already left their livelihood as fishermen and were following Jesus exclusively, helping him with his ministry. Jesus is real. It's the teaching part that people get wrong. For example, in this scene, Simon gets down on his knees and says to Jesus that he's a sinner and he's not worthy. That's me. That's everyone. None of us are worthy. I don't claim to be a high and mighty christian because I'm a sinner. I try not to sin but I do it anyway because I'm weak. Jesus knows this but like Simon, he still invites me to follow him. Some days I do really well and other days I fall and can't get out of my own way. Even at the end of his life, Jesus tells Simon that he will betray him but Simon says never. And what happens? Simon claims he's not with Jesus and doesn't know him. Then he hears the cock crow and suddenly realizes he just committed the ultimate sin against Jesus. Again, that's me. I do this daily because I'm a sinner. But Jesus will determine my fate. That's why I believe in Jesus, even if I don't always follow him.
