Matthew had spent his whole life not belonging, not fitting in, so when Simon asked Jesus, "Do you even know him?", and Jesus knowingly said, "Yes", Matthew had no choice but to follow.

You’re not referring to the gospel of Matthew are you. Because there is zero evidence that a man named Matthew even wrote it. Nor does a man named Matthew claim to have written or claim to have even been an eyewitness to any of the events whoever wrote any of the four gospels wrote about.
