I think the WFH discussion would be better informed if you guys connected with leaders who actually work in an established and fully scaled corporation. (Google, Meta, Microsoft, Netflix, etc.) A lot of the questions you guys would be much more easily answered and would probably support you guys as you continue to scale and build out your companies. Maxx your points are valid, if you gave each person their own office, etc. etc. then why not just be in the office? But you have to understand that is now how most corporate environments work. Most companies: - Don't give you your own office (think cubicles or the terrible open space environments) - Don't let you bring your dog or child to work (that's increased costs from doggy daycare, dog walking, child daycare, etc.) - Don't let you wear comfortable clothes (button down and slacks and dress shoes, yuck) - Take forever to get to and from during rush hour (20 min commute could turn into 1.5 hours, not to mention you'd have to wake up that much earlier to beat traffic, drop your dog off at daycare, then get home late cuz you got to gym then pick up your dog, etc. etc.) Just overall a really shitty situation which is why a lot of people prefer working from home nowadays, a hybrid environment could bridge the gap for you. Also, if you're worried about people just dicking around while they're at home. You got to do what the major corporations do, set concrete work hours and expectations (if I need you at 3pm, you better be available, etc.) and also communicate you expect people to come into the office for major meetings and/or other strategic collaboration sessions. Lastly, to echo Christian's point, you have to create/set concrete KPI's, performance metrics and a performance review process for each role/level that you designate within the company just as all the major corporations do. This alone will mitigate the risks of people just doing the bare minimum. It pushes people to perform or get pushed out and also gives them the opportunity to level up and move vertically within the company. *For context I have been in Management Consulting for the past 10 years, this is literally how all large businesses work*

I work from home now after going into an office for the past ten years. The quality of life I have WFH actually has me working more for the company now. For example I go to the gym in the morning and I clock in at 9-9:30 am and no one bothers me. I can run errands at lunch or enjoy a leisurely lunch. Because I’m happier at work and there’s flexibility, I actually work more and I’m happy to work.

Agree with this! It shows how limited their experiences are. I work at one of largest services firms and large sample size of employees wouldn’t work with these guys because their POV is not testament to where job market is. Work life balance and managing life, family, work.. and still being a high performer is happening all over.

Yup lol this was such an old school manager rant. As if having someone in an office means they’re working all the time, if someone slacks off at home they’ll do the same in the office. And no, you don’t pay for my time, you pay for my results. There’s jobs where working more time produces more output, you can make an argument in those, but in more creative/thinking jobs, hours spent are a pointless metric. Personally, I’m probably the person who works less hours in my team, but the second one when it comes to results. Client’s happy, my company is happy, I’m happy. If I worked more hours the only variable that would change is me being miserable, and turns out that a miserable person tends to performs worse.

I've noticed people that are against work from home have a micromanagement vibe. Worrying an hour or hours might not be utilized when the same amount of work is completed in X amount of time will drive talented employees away. It just means you have to be able to hire the correct employees, which is probably another micromanagement issue. So the employees being hired by that type in the first place probably can't even be trusted, since talented people will be able to sniff out the micromanagement. I will add, I'm fully remote and make 6 figures. All my work gets done and I'm always available during business hours.

One of the main reasons people want to work from home is reduction of travel expenses and ease of child care. I think you guys are confusing remote working with flexible working. Both can be provided or one in isolation. Sounds like you guys need a strong COO to support you with managing your operations more effectively. Hit me up :)

Any real COO would understand KPIs & how majority of the time production drops with people working remote as there is less accountability. You have to be motivated on your own to effectively work remote, if not the flexibility will eat you alive.

In fairness, both of these guys are true visionaries. They shouldn't have to be embroiled in day to day operations but clearly are due to a lack of effective business management practices. I remember Christian referencing he was outsourcing HR - on the face of it that often sounds great to CEOs but the reality is you usually receive a cookie cutter service from a team who's far less invested in the businesses success than a strong in house HRBP or Chief People Officer etc. It's clear from the way he talks about people issues, he has issues around org design and performance management.

The WFH conversation 😂 I work from home and definitely work longer hours now because I end up working during what used to be my commute time. Living in a metro area, you can spend at least 2 hours a day just commuting. You might be paying for my time but why should I waste another 2+ hours of my time for your time? That’s part of the work from home balance you’re missing. I’m not using my time during the day (work day) for me but in the morning I now have time to actually work out, take my dog for a real walk, etc. When I’m done working, I’m done and I’m home. I’m available all day. We have teams, we have slack, we’re 👏🏻 available. I agree with other comments that people who want you in the office tend to be micromanagers. I’m way too busy not to be working… I’ve never experienced the environment of being given so few deliverables or tasks that I could do 2 things and then watch Netflix. Wild man. You need managers who are skillful in their own strategic leadership to manage others.

The WFH topic is super interesting to me as someone who is WFH 24/7 and lives in the NYC area. I, personally, make WAY more money (I work in sales) than I did when I was commuting in and generally feel so much happier. We all have a set schedule of 8:30am to 5:30pm but you can adjust if needed. Not only do I no longer have this long commute that drains me but I can sleep in longer and have more freedom, time to get things done. I can generally eat whenever I want, take breaks and work in a way chiller atmosphere. I'm super autonomous so that works very well for me. My gym schedule can either be 6am or 5:30pm and I love having the flexibility daily to chose which I want since my gym is a block away. I totally understand their points though depending on the type of job you do as some ppl do slack off/are less productive. I, overall am a huge, huge supporter of WFH as long as it works for you and you're productive. Some people need that office/other ppl around them vibe and I totally understand that.

First off I absolutely love Christian and everything he puts his mind into. There's not been a guy I've seen be so consistent throughout the years. Big goals and he always gets there. Everyone thought Alphaland was going to be a car crash but just like Maxx says, nothing that a positive attitude and more money can't fix :) Both Maxx and Christian have been big inspirations to me. On the working from home topic, I have been at it for the past 3 years and I can guarantee you that I have been more productive in these 3 years than the last however many years in an office. I am not interrupted to chit chat about the weekend and I am focused. I work in an environment where I do need to apply creativity and innovation to what I do together with my team, I think Joe's view that innovation cannot happen without someone being present is slightly outdated. Any good collaboration tools online will allow for all activities you would do in person. In addition, wfh saves not only on crazy commuting expenses but also time, time is extremely valuable to many of us who would much rather spend 1 hour with the family than 1 hour sitting/ standing on a busy train.

The WFH talk starts at 34:00 for those curious. I agree that the innovation for your company should be in person with other people but if you are doing something that has repetitive tasks with a very specific outcome that doesn't require creativity and just needs to be knocked out day in and day out, WFH is superior. For example, tech sales. Stuff like what y'all are doing with building new things for the gyms, new clothing ideas, new software for the gyms, and whatnot. I also get the sense that despite the goofiness of Maxx he's a bit of a control freak personality wise. Be a good friend, and a good investor to work with, not someone I'd work under however based on this conversation. Give me more freedom to do what I want and I'll max your output to 100x. You want that as a business owner so you can focus on the even higher level thinking for the organization tasks and building new ones.

Naw, dawg, you're the one paying them at the end of the day and if someone saw me as just another person to have at their beck and call I'd peace the eff outta that. Plus, your employees should know what their job is day to day. If you have to create that for them that doesn't sound like you have a defined description of what should be done in each job. I've been burned in jobs before by doing way more than was technically asked of me to bend over backwards for someone/a company buy not getting paid said compensation for the job.

More friends episodes, really enjoy them! Also work from home/remote is excellent. Have been remote software dev for 4 years and would never go back to an office. I get 2+ hours back from my day that I didn't get while working in office. No morning commute, no after work commute, no morning prep/making lunch. Can make better healthier lunch/less reason to eat out. Save money on gas, eating out, lower stress in general. I think I see you guys as coming from perspective as employer. Which I get, you don't want to waste your time or the employees time. Also the perspective of small/mid size business. If an employee isn't responsible enough to work remote and complete the work, then maybe they shouldn't be hired in the first place. Core work hours is a very common thing in remote positions. Each remote team I've been on has set hours you are expected to be online/working/available.

Love this podcast! Perfect start to my week! Just guys being dudes! I love when Joe and Christian are on the show! Just wanted to touch on the WFH argument if y’all are willing to be open minded. I work more than I do in an office. When I’m in the office I’m looking for someone to shoot the shit with. I’m not locking myself in my office to work cause I can do that at home. I log in at 7:15-7:30, I work through lunch, I’m always logged on til 5pm or later. I definitely don’t feel like my work is worth less than someone else’s based on my offices setting not being in a space the company pays for. Lots of people who do work in an office view the commute as part of work time, if that’s the case I’m already working when what would by my “commute”. I think needing KPI is a little big brother and a turn off to already hard working individuals, now if you had concerns on what an individual is doing that’s when something like that should be enforced. WFH gives me more opportunity to just wear brands like alphalete and buffbunny all day every day, sometimes twice a day cause I lift before work. The only break I take is to walk my dood for 20-25min a day in the morning. Maybe im just not built like everyone else. Always wanted to work for alphalete, but remotely cause I own a home, so that was a little dream crushing. Anyway! Can’t wait for next week!

I agree with christian, when i worked from home it was between normal office hours and had to login and be available on the system. Working from home was great for me with a disability where i can’t always get into work i dont lose pay and have less sick days. Also i get more work done as i dont have background noise and distractions.

I deal with ERP Systems in my engineering job. It stands for Enterprise Resource Program. Basically a system where you keep track of your inventory, manufacturing step, scheduling, billing, all types of task that is used in manufacturing and big business settings. It is daunting to use and takes time to learn.

Also, working from home allows people to get more sleep, and be less sleep-deprived. As a student, most of my classes are online, because I think physically showing up is often not worth the hassle. I only take classes like sailing or surfing in person.

I’m an engineer in process for major Pharma, unless we are qualifying equipment or running initial batches, there is no reason for me to come to site. I can get everything else done from home. Working from home doesn't equal to employees choosing whatever time they feel like working at. They can't just decide to work a 8pm-4am shift for example. I agree with CG, if you just put in the contract that your employee has to work a 9am-5pm shift, then no matter what, they should be available to answer any calls, run a work errand, etc., during that time even if they're WFH.

Public vs private is such a loaded conversation. I’m not rich and my kids go to private school. In fact, 50% of the school is on state scholarship. It has little to do with income. Where the difference is made is a private school has the right to accept or deny students. A public school does not. So if we have a student in the private sector who caused problems all year, he will not be asked back for the following year. My kids also have a classroom of 9-14 compared to the public school who has 25-30 students per class. So many factors make a difference in my child’s education. Now, that being said, I have always taught my children that, if necessary, they could attend the public school and be just fine, just as I was. It’s not all about elitist attitudes. I know some kids that struggled at our private school, switched to public school and thrived and vice versa. I personally have one child that I think would struggle in public and one that I think would thrive. Something I also find interesting is one of my public school teachers criticized me for sending my kids to private school because she said “public school was good enough” for me and my husband. I replied, yea sure, if “good enough” means cheating in math class from 6-12th grade because that’s exactly what I did. Now, 8 years later, not only does her grandchild attend the same private school as my children, she also teachers there 😂

I’ve personally moved up in my career ever since working from home and even doubled my income. Ever since wfh, I got more time to teach myself new programming languages/skills and apply them to personal projects. In fact, it even helped my previous employer because I applied those skills and automated many tasks before I got hired at my current company. And even now I’m still learning new skills during down time and applying those skills at my current job. I have time to do this because I’m not wasting time on commuting, getting ready, being forced to use all my lunch time, coworkers spending too much time asking how my weekend was, etc.

That’s a lot of opinions of working from home from 2/3 individuals who haven’t worked from home. I’ve noticed most bosses that are against wfh are very reactive in their own roles.

I wfh for a private company and a HUGE benefit you didn’t touch on was the ability of getting talent that’s not local. You guys made tons of great points though - Joe truly knows best, where it does depend on the person. It also depends on the work like Christian mentioned. Great conversation and of course Maxx is very right - where a LOT of people will slack, especially in a corp. position.

The wfh segment is also convenience and cost savings too. Think about not having to commute, going out for lunch or work attire etc etc.. For instance my commute is 25 min both ways.. so there’s almost a hour lost every day. We have to pay 400$ a month for aftercare just cause my wife doesn’t get out of work by 15 min earlier. Even things like yeah having music on in the background, going to the gym for your lunch cause you don’t have to worry about being sweaty or needing a shower etc.. all these things are conveniences that people want especially how crappy pay is and how expensive life is.. the pandemic proved it can work.. and what I see at work is a bunch of stolen hours too.. people just sitting there or talking shit with each other… I wish I could have 1-2 days at home.. never gonna happen though sadly

that long angle for the camera at the end of the table is not it. You need to rearrange the seating or maybe buy a triangle table. Whenever you have 2 guests on, the guest at the front will block the guest in the back. Not a big deal I don't think but it would look better with a triangle desk to spread everyone out a little.
