The Christian Says in his Heart, "There is no Atheist"

There's a trend among some Christians to deny the very existence of atheists. It's not enough to say that atheists are wrong about God. They say that people who claim to be atheists actually deep down know God exists but pretend he doesn't or somehow subconsciously suppress the knowledge in their hearts. There are various reasons for this. For one, it makes an easy rhetorical strategy for dealing with ideas they don't want to confront. Also, there are aspects of Christian doctrine that can encourage this thinking in some people. Parts of the Bible (such as Romans 1:20) speak ill of non-believers and claim they are suppressing truth in unrighteousness - and overall, it's hard to come to terms with sincere nonbelief when you believe in a God who is all powerful, wants everybody to believe, and condemns those who don't to eternal torment.
Today we'll be focusing on the consequences this kind of thinking, namely how it encourages some Christians to engage in unconstructive conversations with atheists and others in "The World."

I don't know why anyone would be upset when theists say atheists don't exist. He's just conclusively proved that he doesn't know what he's talking about, and you don't need to listen to anything else he says. Even better when they quote Romans 1:20 to an atheist - unknowingly offering indisputable proof, that the Bible is wrong.

In a lot of ways, the "no atheists" argument feels like the natural end-state of apologetics. Most apologetics are poorly optimised to persuade non-believers as they rely heavily on scripture, making them exercises in question-begging. What they are better-designed to do is persuade Christians that they don't need to engage with arguments from outside the faith. It's memetic inoculation - an attempt to stop your co-religionists from picking up memes from "The World" which could lead them to deconvert.

I think the only reason it even has the veneer of engaging with non-believers is because that act itself can also serve the purpose of helping other believers feel justified. If it didn't (and in some cases it doesn't), I doubt most of them would bother with the charade. Some apologists (the ones whose audience have no such compunction) are already as subtle as a wrecking ball strapped with dynamite.

@justafishingdude
@justafishingdude Жыл бұрын
@@myfavoriteviewer306 I would point out it is because we as humans have sinned, breaking God's laws as it were, that we go to hell if we are judged on our own merit. To confirm this, let's take a look and see if we are guilty of breaking God's laws by examining just a few of the ten commandments. Have you ever lied? Ever taken anything, no matter how small? Ever lusted in your heart after someone? Jesus says that is adultery in your heart. Ever hated someone? The Bible says if you hate your brother you are a murderer. If we are lying, fornicating, murderous thieves by God's standards (these are just a few examples of sin or missing the mark), are we truly good? If we are judged by the 10 commandments, will that be good enough? According to these few commandments, we are all breakers of God's laws and therefore under condemnation based on that law. Hell (and ultimately the lake of fire) is the punishment that was set out for sin, just as jail (or worse) is the punishment if you or I break our country's laws. A just judge in this world would not let a murderer go free without punishment. That murderer could go and live an upstanding life for the rest of his life, but he is still guilty and will pay the penalty if caught. He could say He's sorry a hundred times, but that won't take away what he's done or remove his punishment. How then could a God who is perfectly just let the punishment for breaking the law (our sins/crimes) go unpunished? That is why we need a Savior. Someone who was not guilty in order to pay for the guilty. If Jesus would have been guilty, it wouldn't have paid the price, but He lived a perfect life as God and man, making the perfect sacrifice for us through His death on the cross and resurrection - taking God's wrath upon Himself. God can legally let us have eternal life because of what Jesus did - not because of our goodness. If you accept His free gift, Jesus' righteousness can be credited to your account. Suppose you have a stack of speeding tickets and absolutely no money and no way to pay them. Then the judge says "these are very serious, but I can legally let you go because someone has paid for the tickets". Your goodness is not going to get you out of those tickets, but someone else paying for them did. In the same way, we can't pay for the laws we have broken (Isaiah 64:6 says our works are as filthy rags) against God, but Jesus can. This then is how we can be saved. The fact is not one of us is good enough to make it on our own. Each one of us has broken God's laws and are therefore under judgment. Romans 6:23 tells us all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. "Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him. For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son." Additionally, here is a fabulous message illustrating salvation through the account of the thief on the cross - appropriately titled "Simply What Must I Do To Be Saved". It's only a about a half hour and for something with eternal consequences, it makes sense to at least hear it out right? :) kzbin.info/www/bejne/lYiun4Ocn75lorM

This is called Love bombing. When someone you don't know says, "I love you." or "Jesus loves you." it's a form of psychological abuse. The purpose is to manipulate people under the guise of love by inflicting shame and guilt on people for not conforming to a religion or faith. The point is a religious zealot will say, "God loves you so much that if you don't love him back, you'll be tortured in hell forever but he still loves you." The entire Christian faith is built on a threat to instill fear in people to conform under the threat of violence and torture. It's not love. It's abuse. It's violence. It's a twisted mockery of love.

My saying, Christians think they would not find their *ss to wipe it if God would not lead their hand - each time. The funny thing is - even though they SAY that, the real selling point of christianity is for blind faith and never asking questions you get as reward that the Almighty God created the whole universe ONLY for us, WE are in the center of his attention, you OWN the truth, no need to know what the truth is, you are ALWAYS right, whatever you do or say. In this whole universe you are the most God-like thing that exists. God's perfection rubs off on you through his perfect word and because you are created in his image (of a spaceless, timeless, matterless being without body) It provides them with the excuse for ultimate vanity. They say they are sinners (see your list), but they are so sure of their infallibility as if they were as perfect as God. Maybe ask them "Are you a sinner? Are you fallible? Are you sure I am wrong when I say I do not believe in your God? How can you be so sure of that when you are a fallible sinner? Assuming perfection in your judgement is assuming you are perfect, but perfection is solely reserved for God." I think they could not answer.

Dispensing of existence. The group has the prerogative to decide who has the right to exist and who does not. This is usually not literal but means that those in the outside world are not saved, unenlightened, unconscious, and must be converted to the group's ideology. If they do not join the group or are critical of the group, then they must be rejected by the members. Thus, the outside world loses all credibility. "As if you can think yourself into knowing god." What's the alternative, is it 'wish' yourself into knowing god? 'Pretend' yourself into knowing god? If you're of one of the Abrahamic faiths, certainly Christianity, you very much are expected to believe and that's an order. In other words, you must make a willful choice, a deliberate concious decision to believe in God. That's called doxastic volunteerism and I find it impossible. At the very heart of Christian doctrine, sits a demand to make a willful *choice* to believe. That means to MAKE yourself BELIEVE, ie. MAKE BELIEVE. If you can't explain how it happens that you've come to know God exists at all, then I have no choice to assume you are just pretending (MAKE BELIEVE) that god exists. Especially if you're a Christian, where the imperative is explicit. And yes. If the existence of God is an objective fact of reality, the method of realising that fact would have to be 'thinking'. That's how we 'know' anything. If you have a better method, that isn't just pretending, then I'd like to know about it.

So thanks, I won't consider you in the ranks of the theist. Since your unwilling to defend your beliefs with good reason, I dub thee a non-atheist. ...When he said that saying atheists don't exist is controversial, it made me think about making a "teach the controversy" joke to satirise it... but then I remembered that that phrase exists primarily _because of_ Creationists in the first place and the irony of faking a controversy just for the sake of having something to teach suddenly become not so ironic. Reality: killing satire since the invention of language-based communication. But hey, at least his immediate reaction to the question of "what should we think about atheists?" is to check in with the guy who needed a direct personal intervention from God before converting to Christianity to know why people should believe with no evidence whatsoever. Reality works in mysterious ways.

If God had written himself on all our hearts wouldn't that mean we already had a built in god detector?

This isn't the worst argument for atheism not existing I've ever heard... that'd have to go to that Almando guy Logicked covered, who argued, "If you're an atheist, then you're a theist! Which means you DO believe in God!" Seriously. Guy really thought that was the knock-down argument. The fact that he doesn't understand prefixes. XD

Even when I was most involved in Christianity, I always had doubts. Even in the bible Jesus claimed to be abandoned. At least in science we can trust to be getting closer to the truth.

If atheists don’t exist he should inform all his fellow professional apologists that they are out of job. No need for apologetics if everyone is a believer, right?

Controversial, no. Contrafactual, yes. Since Apologetics is a defense of Christianity, that means there is a reason not to believe.

I saw a great video by a young Athiest and this is a great paraphrase when you encounter this argument. "You speak German." They likely will answer "No I don't." You just keep repeating the claim until they clue in or leave.

I’m not overly offended by an apologist telling me that I don’t exist. Sure, it is insulting, but it’s been done so many times by now that at most, I’m probably just going to roll my eyes and tune them out or just laugh, depending on my mood. My problem with it is that they usually aren’t actually talking to us. They’re trying to convince other, less annoying, christians to not even consider our thoughts because we’re just lying anyways. They are essentially “suppressing the truth in their righteousness” and that’s far more irritating. I’d much rather they lie to someone who isn’t going to fall for it.

I'd rather be ethical and kind than righteous. My dad told me when I was a kid that "A good man doesn't do good because of an ancient book, promises of heaven or threats of hell. A good man does what is right BECAUSE it's the right thing to do" Also, I am confused by the whole "Sorry, I don't believe," being an accusation somehow

Accepting obvious falsehoods as unquestionable truths is a strategy to maintain cult membership. It's a leap of faith that separates the in group from the out group. Not only does it cause the believers to reject the nonbelievers, but it also encourages the nonbelievers to reject the believers. It forms a barrier between the groups that is hard to overcome.

idk if he's the one, but I talked to someone like this on Twitter, and just told him I exist and am indeed an atheist. And then he told me I need to show evidence that I exist. Not as an atheist, but in general. That I am real person that exists. He was serious, too. Very odd, these people.

Ask this guy ONE question: Does _he_ believe in the flying purple spaghetti monster? When he inevitably answers, "No.". Than, like it or not this _is_ his proof that Atheism exists. As he doesn't believe in _that_ God, this easily explains exactly how others don't believe in his either.

If it is so obvious to everyone on the planet that God and Jesus exist, why do Christians spend SO MUCH TIME and SO MUCH EFFORT needing to convince everyone? Why do they need to spend YEARS learning how to defend something so obvious? Maybe because it simply isn't so obvious to people who are not Christian, not just atheists?

People just keep insisting that their God is real but when it comes to justifying their faith .. they keep throwing out clowns like this and that's something I really would start asking if I engaged on this topic .. it's like, how can you believe in something that when asked to defend it .. this kind of thing is what you have?
