It's basically an Ab with a #4 (or #11, the d-natural), which is the Lydian mode.

Easiest way in the book to get rid of the avoid note & give a change a kick of brightness in the process. I never made the connection with playing a minor 1/2 step below over the root for it though. Cool idea & evocative sound.
