By 1999 Dr. Dre was dealing with a great amount of doubt. It had been several years after he released his critically acclaimed debut album “The Chronic” and by 1996 Dre would leave Death Row and would start a record label that we know now today as Aftermath Entertainment. He would release a compilation album titled “Dr. Dre Presents: The Aftermath” in November of 1996 and have involvement in The Firm’s debut album. Both albums weren’t necessarily received the best and this cast a shadow of doubt over Dre. His second studio album “2001” would show his critics that he’s still got it.

21:36 Dr. Dre said Eminem wrote Forgot About Dre for him & Snoop Dogg originally and Eminem did the reference vocals for Snoop Dogg but Dr. Dre liked the way it sounded with Eminem on it, so they just kept it that way and Dr. Dre did his vocals and that was it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pWHLkqqljt9kZ9E (At 2:54 mark) Also Eminem actually did write the whole song as on the 2001 album back cover, Eminem is credited for writing both of Dr. Dre’s verses and as you already mentioned Dr. Dre even said "Eminem actually wrote that. He came in and was like, ‘I got this song I wrote for you.’ The song is considered a response to the Death Row Records compilation album Suge Knight Represents Chronic 2000 Still Smokin', Death Row Records artists Tha Realest, Swoop G, Twist & Lil C Style responded with a song called F*** Dre where they diss Dr. Dre, Eminem, Snoop Dogg, N.W.A & Nate Dogg on a modified beat of the Forgot About Dre song, the song is on the Death Row Records compilation album Too Gangsta For Radio that came out in September 2000

I know kids don't buy CD's anymore but this is the ONLY CD I ever bought multiple copies of back in high school. The entire album slaps, even the skits (Ed-Ucation might be the greatest rap skit of all time imo). Also a shame that Hittman didn't do much after this, I loved his bars on this album. edit: top 5 for me is kind of impossible. I absolutely love every song except for The Message (still a good song, just doesn't really fit imo). Big Egos is probably my favorite at the moment but that changes almost every time I listen to the whole album

Iovine is straight cappin. According to Eminem (and Dre), Eminem gave a copy of the Slim Shady LP to a woman at the rap olympics, who eventually ended up getting a position at Interscope (by chance). SHE gave the record to Iovine, along with a bunch of other demos. Iovine forwarded the tapes to dre, and eventually Dre listened to it. He claims he never even realized Em was white until he showed up for that first recording session.

This video is very informative and worth a few more watches! I like both Chronic albums. The first the reason I like it is because the songs got that funky party vibe, added with undeniable bounce. Chronic 2001 for me is more cenematic dark and a little laid back in the production process. Both albums just makes you want to either dance or zone out!

How does everyone feel about Snoop Dogg removing the entire death row catalog off of Spotify and other streaming services and only wants to sell them as an NFT in the meta-verse? I get that Artists don’t get paid a lot of money from streaming, but at the same time, not everyone can afford an NFT, they just wanna listen to the album that’s it. If you wanna listen to the OG chronic album, it’s no longer on Spotify neither is doggy style, also, he’s trying to get a hold of 2Pac’s catalog next.

An unsorted batch of some info not mentioned in the video. There's a bunch of tracks that surfaced from his 1996 "Papa got a brand new bag" sessions including that smoking weed and OG Dre solo "California Love". Probably the album was supposed to have more Dre solo joints as "Been there, done that" and "Keep the heads ringing on" were also solo joints, which normally is very rare for Dre. OG "the next episode" was indeed a leftover from Snoop's "Doggystyle" album. It was most likely cut at the very end of the album's development as it's still printed on the tracklist on the album's first pressing with "G's up, H's down". Because of the nature and quality of the sound the OG version sound very haunting and i absolutely love it. I always thought "The Watcher", which is my favourite track off the album, was written by Nas. It's because i never really found Em to be "street" introspective (diff to general introspectiveness), which is something that Nas excels at. I believe the album took a hard turn around mid 1998 when Em, X & Storch were added to the team. Before that apparently the theme for the album was sort of a continuation of the creepy futuristic style Dre had under Sam Sneed in the mid 90's. Around 2 years ago a tape surfaced with a batch of demo joints including possibly the earliest track for the album called "Airwave Terrorists" and possibly the very first variant of the "What's the difference". It was back, when Melman, Hittman & Diezel were the main guys behind the album. All of "What's the difference" versions have a different Dre verse. Technically if you combined all of them you would achieve a Dre solo joint. There's an unrecognizeable amount of unreleased and never seen stuff off this album. Possibly the most known is "Malibu Dre", which was supposed to be the first single before "Still Dre" was finished. There's also a theory that some joints from Snoop's "No Limit Top Dogg" album were early leftovers from 2001 album. Snoop's album was released in mid 99, so a couple of months before 2001.

It came out as I was a freshman in college! Such an awesome time, and it was our soundtrack, so to speak. Side note, the MM LP had already came out that spring, and I’m embarrassed to admit this now, but since Em was a white rapper, I kind of dismissed him, and didn’t really listen to it or give him a chance. But then, when I heard Forgot about Dre, Em’s parts blew my socks off!! I was like, this is literally the best rapper I’ve ever heard! Been an Em fan ever since!

South Side California here.....when this album dropped there was alot of tension on the streets between gangs and fans due to what had transpired in the last decade....the album brought the people in california togerher by rapping the cali culture that everyone in the world loved....what was that????? LOWRIDERS... CHRONIC... CALIFORNIA... FINE ASS FEMALES... BBQS AT PARKS LA CULTURE....This is why i would have to say my best track is LOLO (Intro) when the album played for the first time it was like a movie co starring Xzibit and everybody was excited that we had Xzibit on the team....that intro its self made it known that this album is gonna be fucking hard....everybody was happy....ill never forget....people where happy that Dre went back to what we and the world loved and thats CALIFORNIA CULTURE.........AND THAT LOLO INTRO WAS THE MONIKER THE BATMAN SYMBOL THAT CALIFORNIA IS BACK WITH GOOD MUSIC FOR THE WORLD ........I NEVER PLAY THIS ALBUM WITHOUT PLAYING THE INTRO FIRST .....

I lived in Pittsburgh for years and was in tune with the music scene. A lot of that album as done by east coast artists like Sam Sneed, Mel Man, Jay Z, Joe Beast both production and writing credits. You could dive wayyyy deeper but could insight.

Some shit you missed was not talking about how Lord Finesse produced The Message. Also, Dre got sued for using the THX noise on the Lolo intro, but I don't think the lawsuit went anywhere cause Dre was able to show that he recreated the sound and didn't directly sample it.

I was 11 when I snuck thos album home. Idk wtf they were talking about, but I was in love with the beats. It was nothing I've ever heard before. I literally thought at that age that the word chronic was the title they give rappers for having good music. I had no idea till someone explained it to me.

I've been arguing with older heads about 2001 vs Doggystyle. I am definitely a 2001 fan and I don't think Doggystyle is on the same level as either chronic. I would really like to hear which ome you guys think is better.: Doggystyle or Chronic 2001?
@killdoji5454

Sonically Doggystyle is on the same level but you can’t deny the lushness that you hear on 2001. it’s like hearing the Magnum opus of that sound
