The woman introduced herself as Jadis, the Queen of Narnia. After inviting him to sit and talk with her, and conjuring him food and drink, the Queen confided in Edmund that she had always wanted a son like him to be her heir. Over the course of their chat, Edmund, who of course had no idea of the significance of his information beyond the fact he was telling it to a complete stranger, told her a great deal about his family, and that Lucy had already visited her country, and that she had met Mr. Tumnus.
She offered to make him a prince if he brought his siblings to her realm, to make them dukes and duchesses. Edmund agreed, even though he had no real interest in his siblings getting anything, and promised to keep it a surprise, bidding farewell to the Queen.

The mood is meant to be from the POV of the kid. We may see it in a total set manner from the camera, but imagine the perception we see of her is meant to be how the kid sees her in that moment. So in the movie, whether she was like that in reality matters not as the director successfully caused us to see the scene how they intended.

This movie was so ahead of its time not just the CGI but the acting. The actors that played Edmund and Lucy in particular are so talented. People don’t appreciate how difficult their job was. Especially kids to have to interact with fake creatures, a fake world, and make it come to life and be so believable. So incredible. Also Tilda Swinton is gorgeous. This scene is a *masterclass* for actors. Personal intention, building/following an emotional arc during a scene, and a deep characterization that creates otherworldly gravity. The entirety of the Witch is revealed here by Swinton; her narcissism, wrath, fear, power. Every move she makes from her eyes to her tone is so responsive to the choices of the actor of Edmund. She's completely in tune. On paper, the White Witch is an un-redeeming, unsympathetic, repelling tyrant. But Swinton makes her antagonist charming, magnetic. While the obvious choice for the material might be a "loudness" in the Witches arrogance, Swinton goes for an almost gentle approach. She holds a simmering sense of danger, power, for a creature that is well over a thousand years old. Her interior work for the Witch is fantastic. One of the major reasons I wish she was truly brought back in Prince Caspian. Nothing in Narnia matches her as an antagonist after this film. Kind of wish in an alternate universe, she had been the Sauron like figure of the series.

@@TigerWoodsLibido sometimes the best explanation is the simplest. Jadis didn't and doesn't have a particular hatred of life that transcends a bitter narcissist. Sibling jealousy, resentment and rivalry is not something to mess around with.

I wonder if Lewis was influenced by Andersen's The Snow Queen. There's certainly elements of it in Narnia. In some versions Kai is Gerda's brother in others just a friend. Lucy - Gerda, pure of heart Edmund - Kai, innocently corrupted by evil and rescued Jadis - Snow Queen

You know, at this point in the story, Edmund has been treated like dirt by his siblings (most notably Peter). Edmund, himself, never did anything to really deserve it. The worst he did was not backing up Narnia's existence for Lucy, at a point in which it wouldn't have accomplished anything to say it was real. I doubt that Peter and Suzie would've believed his word and probably just thought he was pranking them. What I am getting at is that he was totally right to befriend the only person who treated him nicely, for once.
@rileynelson6624
@rileynelson6624 Жыл бұрын
Peter did call him an idiot when he made a brave (though, admittedly stupid) move to save the last photo of their father before the house windows shattered. That was going to be all that would be left of their father in case he was killed or drafted into another battle. The girls needed something to remember him by. I wouldn’t call it selfish. Edmund was just trying to prove he was worthwhile to his family after having trouble with the other boys at school, where he started to misbehave (according to C.S. Lewis). It seemed that everything he did up to this point wasn’t good enough for his family.

Implying that he wasn’t to blame for feeling ostracized and in turn, befriending a complete stranger instead of just being kind to your siblings is wild. It’s not like they bullied him for no reason. He should’ve actually apologized for running back into that house for a picture because that was objectively stupid. Then he kept being a little jerk to them and his little sister cuz he was too selfish to admit he was wrong. He absolutely deserved all of this because even after this, he proceeded to betray his siblings and get them murdered for some Turkish food. This little boy needed to learn a lesson. He wasn’t a victim by any means 😂

The new Falcon and the Winter Soldier had Zemo doing a Narnia Gambit, by giving a bunch of kids some Turkish delight--and yes, that's the Ancient One cosplaying as Elsa

When Jadis told Edmund that she could see him becoming a prince and eventually king of Narnia she wasn’t lying to him. She told him her greatest fear, in the end she lost because she let her guard down and celebrated her victory all to soon.

At first I didn't understand what you meant, but now I get it. Essentially, Jadis was saying that the prophecy (I'm assuming) predicted he would become a prince of Narnia, and she was naturally against having someone threaten her rule. But it was phrased in a way that made it sound like a compliment. Those are some really nice layers to the dialogue in this scene! Tho I do wonder.. Is there a timeline where she would've accepted Edmund working for her? I know she's cruel to him later on (and intended to kill him on the stone alter), but she also gave him more chances to live than she needed to. I was always curious about that 🤔

@@DLxxx Maybe, but I think Jadis is would always be a lone wolf. She kinda kept Edmund around I think cause she knew Asland would try to save the boy and she could protect herself or trade him in (as she did) if she kept him alive. If she had won maybe she would kept him around but as a stone statue or some brainwashed thing. She was pretty Machiavellic during that time. However I think if prince caspian would have freed her then maybe she would have kept him around. She might now understand the power of ✨ teamwork ✨

Let her guard down? she had just killed Aslan and the Narnian rebel army stood no chance against her in the final battle. How was she suppossed to know that he would come back to life? that is not something you could predict. Her plans were all cunning and successful and there was a point where she had essentially won, but plot armor stepped in to bring Aslan back.
