Back in 87, with the demise of my band, I was asked by my guitarist, Joe Latty, to join a band he was forming that included Peter Koppes, Richard Ploog, and Rick Grossman, (Divynals). I said no because I did not believe that I had what it takes to sing in front of musos of their caliber. Joe went ahead with the project but with Damien Lovelock fronting the band. I wish I had said yes. It would have been a lot of fun. This was a song that band did; kzbin.info/www/bejne/g4S0c4pvpbF5hqc&ab_channel=CubCallaway

If I had to pick one signature Church song, it'd be this. It's got everything. The ethereal tone, jangly guitar, obscure lyrics, Kilbey's off-handed singing and the complex guitar riffs. Not to mention Steve's lairy shirts. 😊

The Church is very special to me as a fan and fellow musician. Out of thousands of bands I have listened to in my lifetime, they are in my top 4. And just like the other three, I heard a song and it just stood out like a sore thumb and I stopped everything to find out who they were. Totally unique with melodies and aesthetics that hit deep. The others are Rush, Type O Negative and Sad Lovers and Giants. The only bands that I went out and purchased their entire back catalog and continued to follow. I like songs equally from other bands, but not the entire package, great personalities and genius.

I think Steve K goes overboard trying to disown the image they made of themselves as mystical posers - by being clownly and self-paradying. I appreciate the frankness and 'coming down' to us mortals vibe, but I hope he doesn't lose sight of the whole package because the beauty and tension in those songs came out of the discipline with which they made that gambit. Of course they are still wonderful songs and arrangements - though I don't like the thumping snare of the 'new guy' (since about 1990?)

Absolutely awesome performance and I was there. Unfortunately though Steve Kilbey cannot sing to save his life anymore and would do well to take some lessons. Yes it gets harder later in life but honestly if I sang this way in a high school band in 1990 I would have been laughed off stage. Stevie Nicks did it - no shame to get some help with your voice later in your career. But does he give a shit?
